Manafort and Cohen convictions don’t change much politically

{ egalinsurrection.com } ~ #TheResistance thinks they got him. The convictions of Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen are it. Trump’s gonna go. Not so fast... The Manafort conviction doesn’t even tangentially involve Trump or the Trump campaign in any wrongdoing. Manafort was prosecuted because he made the wrong life decision to affiliate with the Trump campaign to help manage the anticipated convention floor flight. But for that decision, Manafort never would have been targeted by prosecutors on charges previously ignored by federal investigators. That Manafort was prosecuted because he knew Trump does not implicate Trump in the wrongdoing. The Michael Cohen plea deal is potentially more problematic. Cohen said he made the payments to buy the silence of two women with the knowledge and at the direction of a federal candidate (Trump). That contradicts Cohen prior versions. But assuming it’s provable, it’s not clear that the payments were illegal. The issue is whether they constituted unreported campaign contributions, which is not a slam dunk for prosecutors. In the plea deal the issue was not litigated – Cohen agreed to it because the prosecution had him on more serious tax and fraud charges, so adding in the campaign finance issues was at no cost to Cohen...

Trump, McGahn and Iran-Contra’s lessons

{ aei.org } ~ President Trump’s detractors see White House counsel Don McGahn’s cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller as a breakthrough in Mr. Mueller’s investigation... From personal experience, I see it as further evidence that the president and his advisers have concluded Mr. Trump has done nothing wrong and has nothing to hide. I was White House counsel during the Iran-Contra affair, a case in which President Reagan was accused of the unauthorized use of government funds, illegally selling weapons to Iran, trading arms for hostages in violation of longstanding U.S. policies, an illegal cover-up, and misleading Congress and the American people. These charges were pressed eagerly by the media and committees of Congress, which was fully controlled by dummycrats-Democrats beginning in 1987. As today, the media—led by the New York Times, the Washington Post and CNN—and dummycrats-Democrats in Congress hoped to bring about the impeachment of a Republican president. In writing my book about the Reagan presidency, I counted the number of articles about Iran-Contra in the Times and the Post between Nov. 6, 1986, when the scandal became public, and Jan. 31, 1987, when I got tired of counting. In that three-month period, there were 555 stories in the Post and 505 in the Times, an average of more than five a day in each paper. If you think the media frenzy of today is unprecedented, think again...  http://www.aei.org/publication/trump-mcgahn-and-iran-contras-lessons/?mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiWTJNNE9HSm1ZbUkxWm1NeCIsInQiOiJoNmlpbWNoQjhud0hFbGV5bTNtbVNvMkp2Tzg3ellRbUtnVGE1NkhiM1k1YjRmUUtjMEx4RGZ2N2JmRUdCTWVHUmMycUJyNDRVSGtpTmdPZDZKTUFPQlwvdG5BMTE0UUphR216eHcrYW41ajBmSVhQWnVWdVZnQndRVXNJYnNNNWcifQ%3D%3D

On Israel's Nation-State Law

{ gatestoneinstitute.org } ~ On July 19, Israel's parliament, the Knesset, voted into law the Nation-State Bill... As Israel has never had a constitution, the bill became the latest iteration of the country's Basic Laws, in the form of Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People. To many, this seemed like stating the obvious. Had not Israel been created in the first place for that very purpose? The only question was, "Why had it taken 70 years to turn the obvious into law?" Well, perhaps not the only question. The next one was "Why did 55 Knesset members vote against it, with two abstentions, with a narrow majority of 62 in favour?" Once word got out to the outside world that the Israeli parliament had dared to enact such a definition of their state, it was, for many, as if the end of the world had taken place. As if they had never known that, since the time of the Bible, the land now called Israel was home to the Jews.  Just about everybody went out to condemn the bill as racist, discriminatory, anti-democratic, and opposed to Jewish principles of egalitarianism with non-Jewish citizens.  NBC News ran a headline stating: "Israel 'nation-state' law prompts criticism around the world, including from U.S. Jewish groups". On the very day the bill was passed, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, claimed that: "We've been very clear when it comes to the two-state solution, we believe it is the only way forward and any step that would further complicate or prevent this solution of becoming a reality should be avoided."...  https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12880/israel-nation-state-law

'We will hit Israel if US attacks Iran'

{ israelnationalnews.com } ~ One of Iran’s top clerics warned Wednesday morning that the regime in Tehran would strike Israel in retaliation for any “harm…in the slightest way” by the US against Iran. Ayatollah Seyed Ahmad Khatami, a member of the Islamic republic’s religious governing body known as the Assembly of Experts, told worshippers at an Eid al-Ahda event in Tehran Wednesday morning that Iran would not accept President Donald Trump’s offer to engage in negotiations. “Americans say you should accept what we say in the talks,” Khatami said, according to a report by Mizan. “So this is not negotiation, but dictatorship. The Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation would stand up against dictatorship.” In late July, President Trump said that he would be willing to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for negotiations without any preconditions, just days after he warned the Iranian leader not to threaten the US. "I would certainly meet with Iran if they wanted to meet. I don’t know if they’re ready yet," Trump said. He said he would set “no preconditions,” and, “If they want to meet, I’ll meet, anytime they want.” Khatami also warned on Wednesday that Iran would not limit its attacks on the US if America caused any “harm” to Iran, and that the Tehran regime would retaliate against Israel as well...

Three Kurdish Groups in Iran Are Now Fighting the IRGC
by SETH FRANTZMAN

{ meforum.org } ~ The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Sunday that they had killed “10 militants” in the Kurdish region of Iran... The same day the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) said they had engaged in “heavy clashes” with the IRGC near the city of Oshnavieh and had killed 12 “IRGC terrorists.” The battles come amidst a rise in tensions in Iran with US sanctions kicking in and after six months of protests in various parts of the country, including the Kurdish region. Sensing the regime is strained and the Kurdish groups are now trying to carry out more public attacks on Iran’s IRGC. On Sunday, the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) suggested forming a more united front of Kurdish groups opposing the Iranian regime. There are several Iranian Kurdish groups that have been resisting the regime over the last decade. The PDKI was a thorn in the side of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in the 1980s during a time of tremendous upheaval when the country was transformed by the theocratic government and the war against Iraq. In 1989, Iranian agents assassinated Dr. Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou, secretary-general of the PDKI, in Vienna. It viewed the Kurdish fighters as such a threat that it even threatened to invade Iraq and shelled their positions in Iraq where many Iranian Kurds had fled...

Immigration Problem? Put Some ICE on It

by Lewis Morris:  President Donald Trump hosted an event at the White House Monday honoring the men and women of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Customs and Border Protection agencies.

“You are the patriots and you are the heroes,” Trump told the assembled agents and agency personnel. “You keep us safe and you keep us free. I am honored every single day to serve as your commander-in-chief. I will never leave your side; I will never leave the fight.”
It’s a good thing, too. Both agencies are increasingly under fire by the Left and the media as the debate simmers over illegal immigration and how the government is supposed to handle it. According to leftists, the government shouldn’t do anything at all about illegal immigration. In fact, they are calling for the outright abolition of ICE.
Don’t underestimate the power behind that challenge. The proposal to dismantle ICE may have started as an offhand remark by commie-Bernie Sanders’s socialist padawan commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but it is now a mainstream dummycrats-Democrat plank. Likely 2020 presidential candidates such as Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth dinky-Warren, and Kamala Harris have all joined the call. And three House dummycrats-Democrats introduced legislation to follow through.
Leftists claim that U.S. border policies are harsh and inhumane, and their media lackeys dutifully go along, bending stories any way they can to fit that narrative. Take, for instance, the widely reported story of the illegal immigrant picked up by ICE while taking his pregnant wife to the hospital to have her baby. Conveniently left out of the reporting by virtually every major news outlet — at least the headlines or flashing TV alerts that most people see — was that the man was ducking an outstanding warrant issued for his arrest in Mexico on homicide charges.
Stories like this are meant to cast ICE as the villain, which then leads to further attacks against the agency. What many don’t understand, however, is that ICE is the backbone of America’s immigration enforcement. There would be (even more) chaos without it.
ICE is the principal agency for enforcing immigration laws inside the U.S., including the apprehension of illegal immigrants who have slipped past the Border Patrol; combatting the smuggling of weapons, drugs, and people into the country; and investigating immigration fraud schemes. ICE also protects immigrant communities by cracking down on criminal activity that takes place there. Gangs and other bad guys generally commit crimes in the communities in which they reside, making legal immigrants the victims.
There are other agencies that also handle some of these tasks, but they are already stretched beyond their limits. The sheer volume of cases is more than any single law enforcement agency can bear. Consider that last year over 700,000 people overstayed their visas. That is 300,000 more people than the number apprehended while trying to illegally cross the U.S. border with Mexico during that same period.
Take ICE out of the picture, and the whole immigration system would quickly unravel — which is exactly what the Left wants.
It has been said that dummycrats-Democrats and the Left care more about illegal immigrants than they do about American citizens. But even that’s a stretch because they don’t care about illegal immigrants, either. The leftist call for open borders is an attempt to break down American society by overwhelming our communities and our culture with bad people from foreign lands. Leftists discourage assimilation and the learning of English to help further that goal. dummycrats-Democrats see a fresh batch of voters they can hook onto the government dole and keep leftists in office.
But is this a political winner for dummycrats-Democrats? Not necessarily. As W. James Antle III notes, “House Republicans brought a pro-ICE resolution up for a vote to dare dummycrats- Democrats to vote against it — just 34 did, though 133 voted ‘present’ — while Trump brings it up often on the campaign trail.”
People need to look beyond the rhetoric that demonizes ICE and support the agency’s work to protect American communities from fraud, crime, and terrorism. Without ICE, American streets will not be safe. And that’s why Trump’s celebration yesterday was welcome.
