Paul Ryan & GOP Defeat Democrat Attempt for Amnesty

Democrats’ Attempt to Fund Comprehensive Amnesty in Budget Bill Fails

Thu, Apr 3rd 2014 @ 9:00 am EDT

Republicans voted down a Democratic amendment to the fiscal year 2015 budget bill that would have included funds for so-called comprehensive immigration reform. Media are portraying the gambit as the first major immigration fight of the year but Democrats offered the amendment knowing it wouldn’t pass. The political ploy was meant to put Republicans on the record as voting against the preferred Democratic method of immigration reform.

Democrats tried to sell the amendment as an economic measure that would create jobs and balance the budget. And Rep. Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., the amendment’s sponsor, appealed to Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., to back the measure. “You’ve spoken on reform. I ask you to support my amendment,” Cardenas said.

Although Ryan has been a leading Republican advocate for amnesty and higher immigration levels, he replied, “We don’t support the Senate bill. The Senate bill is over 1,000 pages. We don’t like this way of legislating to begin with.” Ryan said House Republicans support addressing the issue with individual bills that first secure the border, shore up interior enforcement, verify that employees are legally eligible to work and create a guest worker program. And he also said, “(W)e need to give people a chance to get right with the law.”

Republicans defeated the amendment on a 21-15 party-line vote. Even Republicans who have shown some interest in comprehensive amnesty voted against it.

After the vote, the House’s leading comprehensive amnesty supporter, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., spoke on the House floor. He warned Republicans that if they don’t take up legislation within the next 34 legislative session days (about three months), President Obama will act by fiat. Gutierrez said,

“If you don’t act in the next 34 days – if you refuse to give the President a bill he can sign because you do not trust him to enforce immigration laws, even though he has spent more money and deported more people than any President before him, he will act without you. He has alternatives under existing law…Do you think he will sit by and do nothing just because you are doing nothing?

“The Republicans threaten lawsuits and even impeachment if the President acts to spare American families being broken apart by deportations. But this President will act even if you refuse to act…If you give him no choice, this President is going to take charge himself. And he should. So, once again…we offer a lifeline to Republicans. Work with us to pass a bill before the President – faced with no other choice – takes action himself. You have 34 legislative days left until July 4 and you better make use of them. The American people are waiting.”

  • easy solution to the boarder issue, one secure boarder, two perm close the boarder, 3 deport all illegals regardless if they have clean records or not. and if any try continually coming over which they will, put National Guard troops on the boarder and give them the ok to shoot anyone that tries coming in illegally Merica!!!

  • What is real reform with amnesty? Our borders must be secured and the Dumocraps always try to skip over this. What else? It is much harder for one to come legally than it is to come here illegally! However, the later excludes taking our jobs which can happen for them in just several months. If they enter our military they seem to stay. How in the heck can anyone who is an illegal alien join our military? We need to block that and this maybe why the first base murders! We know the other is going to college here and someone usually has to have big money if an alien to attend in the US. If you are married to an alien that wants to come legally with your support it takes over a year and a half to get approved! This is an attack on American Citizens and on purpose because spouses of Americans tend to vote Republican or any, except Dumbocrap! The world knows we have no real Democrat politicians anymore.. they are Commies!

  • Check out some of the Republicans that tried to insert a partial Amnesty into the Defense Bill. This would have opened up the bill being sent to the Senate to add the Schumer/Rubio Amnesty Bill as an amendment.  Thanks to Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) it was blocked, and opposed by other Republicans.  But look at these trultiple news sources are reporting that the House GOP Leadership are working behind the scenes to insert an amnesty bill into the Defense Authorization bill, which will likely be marked up by the House Armed Services Committee this spring. The plan would include the ENLIST Act - a bill introduced by Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) that would grant amnesty to illegal aliens who came to the country prior to 2011, were under the age of 15 when they arrived, and enlist in the military. If the provision is included, the bill would become a vehicle for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to add the Schumer-Rubio amnesty bill as an amendment when it reached the Senate floor.

The ENLIST Act has 42 cosponsors, including 24 Republicans. Among the supporters are Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) who chairs the House Immigration Subcommittee, Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) who chairs the House Armed Services Commitee, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), and the No. 3 ranking Republican in the House, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

aitors that tried to sneak in through!

  • This is from NumbersUSA.

There must have been plenty of emails & phone calls from angry voters.  We are starting to see some pro-Amnesty supporters back-off of the obvious Democrat attempts to ram through an Amnesty Only Bill.   Need to give credit & thanks to any Congressman that does something sensible.
