Medical researchers have warned for weeks that the new coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, is particularly dangerous to seniors and those with underlying health conditions. But in West Coast cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, public authorities are quickly discovering another potential tinderbox for infection: homeless encampments. This has caused significant political discomfort. Three weeks ago, when Seattle radio host Jason Rantz warned about the potential for an outbreak within homeless encampments, progressive activists slammed him as a “fascist” hoping to set up concentration camps for the most vulnerable. However, within days, the progressive narrative collapsed—the homeless are, in fact, uniquely vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. As The New York Times put it: The homeless are more susceptible to contracting the disease … because of the cramped quarters in shelters, the sharing of utensils and the lack of hand-washing stations on the streets. Once infected the chronically homeless are more likely to get much sicker or die because of underlying medical conditions. In San Francisco, public authorities are testing 30 homeless individuals who are hospitalized with symptoms of the coronavirus. If this population tests positive for the disease, the homeless would represent nearly half of all total confirmed cases countywide...

Tom Cotton Debuts Plan to Take Pharma
Production Back From China

Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) introduced legislation Thursday to repatriate pharmaceutical manufacturing from China to America... aiming to reduce a dependency that could seriously limit the U.S. coronavirus response. The bill, which Cotton introduced with Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.), aims to severely curtail the volume of Chinese active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from the U.S. medical drug supply. The PRC currently produces most of the world's APIs—the "active ingredients" in commonly used drugs—leaving the United States and other nations critically dependent on it for medicines. Cotton's is just the latest proposal to onshore pharmaceutical supply chains, including a similar one from Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) and rumblings from the White House about a "buy American" executive order. Prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, many are beginning to see the cost-savings from Chinese-made pharmaceuticals as not worth the risk of undersupply during another pandemic, or during a potential conflict with America's main geostrategic rival. "China unleashed this plague on the world, and China has to be held accountable," said Cotton during a Fox News interview Wednesday evening. "It's too grave a threat to let our health rest on Chinese drugs." The Cotton bill would directly target Chinese API producers, requiring the FDA to track the point of origin for APIs and drugs made outside of the United States, as well as requiring drug companies to list the country of origin for APIs on their products. It would also prohibit all federal entities—including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and Defense—from purchasing drugs that use APIs made in China. The bill also aims to bolster domestic pharmaceutical production capacity. It would allow domestic manufacturers to immediately expense the costs of expanding production capacity, giving such businesses a major write-off on their taxes. If successful, that provision could help U.S.-based manufacturers compete with lower-cost Chinese ones, keeping drug prices low even as production moves back to the United States...

If Shelah succeeds, he will have formed a radical, post-Zionist minority government entirely dependent on 15 Arab lawmakers, who reject Israel’s right to exist, just to stay afloat. As Shelah blazed forward in his efforts, political philosopher Yoram Hazony recalled an earlier bid by Shelah to force the public to accept post-Zionist positions hostile to the very right of the Jewish people to self-determination. In February 2001, the Yitzhak Rabin Center convened a meeting of Israel’s elites from across the political spectrum to compose a document that would set out the Jewish goals of the State of Israel. The meetings led to the drafting of the Kinneret Charter, which in later years served as the basis for the 2018 Basic Law: Israel, the Nation-State of the Jewish People. The Rabin Center was spurred to action by three dramatic events. First in July 2000, PLO chief Yassir Arafat rejected Ehud Barak’s offer of statehood and peace at the Camp David summit, effectively ending the Oslo peace process. In September, Arafat ordered his terror forces to initiate a campaign of terror against Israel the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the 1930s. And in October 2000, the Arab Israeli community joined the Palestinian onslaught. In two weeks of violent riots, Arab Israelis throughout the country assaulted their Jewish neighbors and countrymen and called for the destruction of the state. The third event – the Arab Israeli riots – shook Israeli society to its core because it called into question the very survival of the state as a coherent political unit. As a well-known journalist, Shelah was invited to participate in the inaugural meeting. Hazony recalled that the politician now pushing the hardest to form a government reliant the Joint Arab List which rejects the legitimacy of the Jewish state, stood up and announced that he refused to participate in a Jewish-only forum and demanded that Arab Israelis be invited to participate. Prof. Ruth Gavison, perhaps the most influential intellectual on the Left at the time, responded that Jews have a right to convene to discuss their future just as Arabs do. Ryan Fournier: “The media is quick to call out GOP Senators when they sold stocks based on privy information, But they forgot to call out Senator Fein-stein, who sold anywhere from $1 million to $5 million in stock after a closed-door Coronavirus briefing.” Jamie Dupree Dug up the sales chart saying in regards to Fein-stein, “Here’s a sale about the same time by Sen. Dianne Fein-stein D-CA. In terms of price, Allogene Therapeutics was around $22/share for that sale. It’s now $20.29/share. With commie-Ocasio-Cortez front and center attacking GOP senators involved, some are asking if she will publicly condemn Fein-stein’s actions.

The Senate is likely to first pass the House’s $100 billion aid package, which itself followed the initial $8.3 billion emergency measure earlier this month. Wisdom of the “stimulus” specifics aside, the pressure to “do something” is clearly irresistible.
“We need to directly help American workers and families face this uncertain period, and particularly we’re examining policy tools to put money directly and quickly into the hands of American families,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “We also need to move swiftly and boldly in a major way to help American small businesses survive this disruption and thrive on the other side of it. In particular, we are preparing bold steps to ensure that Main Street can access liquidity and credit during this extraordinary time.”
At the forefront of the package is likely to be an immediate check of at least $1,000 for every adult American (under whatever income level is agreed upon), perhaps followed by a second check in a couple of months. The amount represents about a week’s pay for the typical American worker, but Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin says the amount “may be a little bit bigger than what’s in the press.”
President Donald Trump initially favored a payroll-tax cut, but that would take months to be realized by workers who keep their jobs. He now says, “We want to do something that gets money to them as quickly as possible.”
That will indeed be popular with the millions of Americans who are losing money in real time due to the economic shutdown, which is meant to “flatten the curve” of the viral spread. Perhaps the government checks will even restore the confidence that fuels the stock market.
Still, we’ve tried direct income redistribution twice before and it’s generally ineffective at stimulating the economy. The difference is the previous two times were tax “rebates.” This would just be a direct payment financed by deficit spending. With a national debt of $23.5 trillion and a projected deficit of $1 trillion before spending another trillion, however, the U.S. can’t afford this ineffectual “stimulus.”
Then again, with a national debt of $23.5 trillion, what’s another $1 trillion among friends?
The real problem is that Democrats are seeding an expectation of Universal Basic Income. “GOP & Democrats are both coming to the same conclusion: Universal Basic Income is going to have to play a role in helping Americans weather this crisis,” declared commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the new face of Democrat economics. Democrats have wanted UBI for years, and they’re not going to let this crisis go to waste. Tulsi Gabbard says she doesn’t want the checks to stop “until COVID-19 no longer presents a public health emergency.” How many trillions of dollars would that end up being?
Compassion for the American workers and their families suffering through what is bound to be a major economic slowdown, if not a recession, is one thing. Bankrupting the country to implement socialism is another.
