If Minimum Wage Goes Up, Jobs and Economy
Go Down
A new report on the economic impact of raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour shows what we've always stressed — it will cost jobs. This $15 per hour minimum wage was a prominent message in Bernie Sanders' campaign, and the new, higher dollar amount has gradually been adopted by Democrats in their quest to create what they've dubbed a "living wage." According to the new study, however, this would have the net effect of seven million jobs lost, as companies would need to trim their work force to afford the higher wages. Generally speaking, those workers most likely to be laid off would be younger and less skilled. Once again, the Left's views have little in common with sound economic principles and more to do with the Marxian ideals of fairness.
Meanwhile, there's grim news from one of the leading economic indicators on the health of the economy. Paul Westra, a research analyst for Stifel Financial Corp., recently said that he was "decidedly bearish" on the restaurant industry, which he believes is beginning to reflect the start of a recession. He goes on to explain that restaurants are "like the canary that lays the recessionary egg." Restaurants aren't the cause of recessions, but they'd certainly feel the effects of a $15 minimum wage.
Evidently, Democrats would rather see seven million fewer jobs so long as they can notch the political win of a $15-an-hour minimum wage. -The Patriot Post

Baltimore Ends Witch Hunt Against Police
It's been an embarrassing and, hopefully, career-ending few months for Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby. That city's witch hunt against six of its police officers charged with causing the death of career criminal Freddie Gray began falling apart almost immediately. First came the trial of Officer William Porter. Then Edward Nero, followed by Caesar Goodson. Three trials, and not a single conviction. It appears the memo finally got through this week: Mosby ended her pursuit of criminal liability against the remaining officers. But what havoc she wreaked along the way.
Consider the cost. The Baltimore Sun reports, "The state's attorney's office and Police Department, which bought riot gear and paid officers overtime in anticipation of protests, spent an estimated $7.4 million on the trials, city officials said Wednesday. In addition, the city reached a $6.4 million settlement last year with Gray's family."
Those millions of taxpayer dollars were wasted because one rogue prosecutor tried to make a name for herself. As The Wall Street Journal writes, "[T]his case has always defied easy stereotyping. Ms. Mosby is African American, but so are three of the six officers who were charged." And the cost goes far beyond the financial. "The dramatic increase in murders since the Freddie Gray case is one indication of the price the people of Baltimore will be paying for some time to come," the Journal adds, referring to the chilling effect the case has had on the city's policing efforts.
Yet Mosby insists the fault lies elsewhere. Wednesday she claimed, "What we realized very early on in this case is that police investigating police ... was problematic." Mosby went on to throw the police department and Judge Barry Williams under the bus: "There was a reluctance and an obvious bias that was consistently exemplified, not by the entire Baltimore Police Department, but by individuals within the Baltimore Police Department at every stage of the investigation. ... [T]he judge has made it clear that he does not agree with the state's theory of the case and does not believe that any of the actions or inactions of these officers rise to the level of criminality."
She concludes, "This system is in need of reform when it comes to police accountability." It's certainly in need of reform — beginning with removing a recklessly ambitious prosecutor. -The Patriot Post

Austin entertainment district shot up

Authorities received reports of gunshots in the crowded entertainment area shortly after 2 a.m., Austin Police Chief of Staff Brian Manley said. Manley said a suspect began firing into the crowd after an initial disturbance. He said one woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and three other women were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with gunshot wounds. Officials described those transported to the hospital as in serious condition, but said their wounds were not considered life-threatening. The woman who was killed is believed to be in her 20s, and the other three injured victims are in their 30s...

How Accurate Is the History?

While D’Souza’s latest cinematic enterprise contains much that is very good... including the making of the connection of both President Barack nObama and presidential nominee liar-Hillary Clinton to radical leftist Saul Alinsky, and their own radical backgrounds, some parts of the movie take great liberties with historical fact. I suspect that D’Souza, who spent eight months in prison as a result of a clearly politically inspired prosecution because of his 2012 movie documenting the leftist background of nObama, is understandably bitter. But as bad as the modern Democratic Party is, that does not excuse twisting history in an effort to make the Democratic Party totally evil and the Republican Party totally good. Both political parties have had their moments in history that today's traditionally minded, small-government conservatives can cite as good; but sadly, with both the Democrats and the Republicans, those moments have been far too brief...

That's how Blue Light Friday at the White House came together last week. Unlike the lame duck occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., I have little experience as a community organizer. So I asked retired New York Police Department officer John Cardillo if he could help me turn out his law enforcement friends, families and supporters to honor the fallen.
His one-word answer: "Yes."
Our mission: Bring a blue hue to the People's House in Washington, D.C. -- in the wake of the Dallas and Baton Rouge police ambushes -- since Barack nObama refused to do it himself. nObama spurned the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation's request to make the small, but meaningful, gesture of turning the floodlights blue the same way he turned them rainbow for gay marriage or pink for breast cancer awareness.
Ordering the rest of the country to lower its flags to half-staff for five days was enough, his administration diffidently told reporters.
We did not agree.
As Cardillo told me: "Watching Barack nObama invite those who celebrate cop killers Mumia Abu Jamal and Joanne Chesimard to the White House, and giving the benefit of doubt in police-involved shootings to the career criminals over the career law enforcement officers, compelled me to do something other than rant on air and social media."
Our friend Cameron Gray of NRA News helped spread the word. My colleagues at Conservative Review assisted with logistics and social media coverage. Cardillo also summoned retired NYPD detective, Rob O'Donnell, who runs the nonprofit charity Brothers Before Others, which supports the LEO community.
"As a law enforcement professional for 25 years working with communities of all backgrounds, I can conclude one thing: All lives matter! Always have, always will," O'Donnell told me. "Be it a 911 call, or a peaceful protest, police of all backgrounds do what they were trained to do: run to the gunfire for all, regardless of color or creed."
That's what fallen officers Brent Thompson, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, and Lorne Ahrens did in Dallas. And what fallen officers Montrell Jackson, Matthew Gerald and Brad Garafola did in Baton Rouge. And what fallen officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were sworn to do in Brooklyn. "Same as September 11th, same as Orlando, same as New Orleans, same as every street of every community in every town," O'Donnell reminded us.
We stopped by the nearby National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which features more than 20,000 names of officers killed in the line of duty dating back to 1791, before our vigil. At Lafayette Park, we passed out blue glow sticks and flashlights to a crowd of about 50 people who gathered to take part. Several active-duty LEOs stopped by after work and stood with us, too. A bagpipe player who works at a local fire department led our procession.
Gray noted: "Members of a certain Service than is known for being Secret even quietly thanked some of us, and one said it was hard not to applaud."
A crowd of young Black Lives Matters demonstrators approached, and then retreated without engaging us. Maybe they were allergic to the beautiful sound of "God Bless America" resonating from bagpipes. NBC News and Associated Press photographers snapped pictures and video but perhaps since no American flags were burned or angry fists were raised, none of the images they captured has appeared to have made it on air or in print.
No matter. As the sun sank, our little blue lights twinkled in the dusk and we talked to curious tourists about rising anti-cop rhetoric and violence that doesn't make front-page headlines. Many passers-by draped glow sticks around their necks or promised to turn a light blue on their front porches when they got home.
Cardillo is already working on another event in his adopted home state: "Our #BlueLightFriday gathering in front of the White House is something I hope catches on nationally. I'm optimistic as I'm already planning another for south Florida in partnership with local law enforcement."
Indeed, many families have already taken upon themselves to create their own porch-light memorials and share them online. One Lowe's home improvement store is now selling designated blue bulbs and encouraging customers to "light up the sky blue" in August for the men and women on the front lines.
It couldn't come at a better time. This week, liar-Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Convention are giving prime-time speaking slots to agitators of the Black Lives Matters movement, which has stoked virulent cop hatred without accountability for its bloodthirsty "pigs in a blanket, fry 'em up like bacon" rhetoric.
As Philadelphia's own Fraternal Order of Police noted: "It is sad that to win an election Mrs. liar-Clinton must pander to the interests of people who do not know all the facts, while the men and women they seek to destroy are outside protecting the political institutions of this country."
Teach your children that small gestures matter. Change the culture, one little blue light at a time.
