Gov. Gavin Newsom is putting a moratorium on the death penalty in California, sparing the lives of more than 700 death-row inmates,” The Sacramento Bee reports. An effort to repeal the death penalty was thwarted by voters three years ago, but Newsom is issuing an executive order to circumvent and defy that reproach. As the Bee notes, “While campaigning for a measure to repeal the death penalty in 2016, he told The Modesto Bee editorial board he would ‘be accountable to the will of the voters,’ if he were elected governor. ‘I would not get my personal opinions in the way of the public’s right to make a determination of where they want to take us’ on the death penalty, he said.”

“Former FBI lawyer Lisa Page admitted under questioning from Texas Republican Rep. Higher-ed corruption: “Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among 50 people charged in a $25 million college entrance exam cheating scheme, according to court documents unsealed in Boston on Tuesday. The alleged scam focused on getting students admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities, and helping potential students cheat on their college exams, according to the indictment.” (NBC News)

“A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge has ruled Baltimore City Schools ‘knowingly and willfully’ violated the law,” FOX45 reports, dding: “In December 2017, FOX45 sued Baltimore City Public Schools on behalf of parents and taxpayers who say children are being pushed through the system without the education they need. But City Schools has refused to release important documents about how some students are graduating. Now, a judge is making them.” This is an important case because it’s happening to some extent in every inner city across the nation.
“The Defense Department has approved a new policy that will largely bar transgender troops and military recruits from transitioning to another sex, and require most individuals to serve in their birth gender,” according to the Associated Press. “It falls short of the all-out transgender ban that was initially ordered by President Donald Trump. But it will likely force the military to eventually discharge transgender individuals who need hormone treatments or surgery and can’t or won’t serve in their birth gender. The order says the military services must implement the new policy in 30 days, giving some individuals a short window of time to qualify for gender transition if needed. And it allows service secretaries to waive the policy on a case-by-case basis.” Of course, gender transition is never “needed.”

“More than a dozen Republican senators introduced legislation on Tuesday that would make it easier for Congress to terminate future national emergency declarations, days before the chamber will vote on President Trump’s. The legislation, spearheaded by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), would require that Congress pass a resolution extending an emergency declaration after 30 days for it to continue; otherwise the declaration would be terminated. … Lee’s legislation would not impact Trump’s current emergency declaration on the wall but, if passed, would impact any future emergency declarations.” (The Hill)

“A federal appeals court upheld the constitutionality of Ohio’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood Tuesday. The 2016 law bars state funding to any healthcare organization that performs or promotes abortions. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, had sued over the law claiming that it violated their First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 11-6 Tuesday to overturn a previous decision by a three-judge panel in the same appeals court that said the law was unconstitutional.” (Townhall)

"The nuclear and ballistic missile programs of North Korea remain intact and the country continues to defy Security Council resolutions through a massive increase in illegal ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum products and coal," the report, made public this week, said.According to the report, the UN learned from a member state in April 2018 that North Korea repeatedly used civilian factories and non-military facilities as nuclear and missile assembly and manufacturing sites. The deception was aimed at avoiding a potential "decapitation" of its weapons and missile sites by precision guided attacks on known military sites. Additionally, North Korea purchased centrifuges for its nuclear program last year, the report said. A conservative nonprofit recently filed an FEC complaint against commie-Ocasio-Cortez, arguing that the candidate violated campaign laws in her relationship with a PAC and business operated by her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti. Luke Thompson, vice president of the Republican analytics firm Applecart, was the first to call attention to Chakrabarti's role as architect of the opaque fundraising scheme. Left-wing Intercept reporter Jon Schwarz noted in response that Thompson had once worked at Right to Rise, a 2016 pro-Jeb Bush super PAC that was recently fined by the FEC for accepting foreign donations. commie-Ocasio-Cortez quote-tweeted his tweet and crowed that "the creepy org filing bogus ethics complaints against me just *actually* got hit with one of the biggest fines in FEC history." But as Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale and others immediately pointed out, commie-Ocasio-Cortez's tweet is incorrect. The National Legal and Policy Center filed the FEC complaint against her, not Right to Rise. commie-Ocasio-Cortez tacked on a correction tweet, clarifying that she was talking about the "same guy who operated at the org," and not Right to Rise itself. But even that correction was wrong. Thompson has no affiliation with any of the organizations filing the FEC complaint. Thompson for his part took the false allegations in stride....
Senate Panel Seeks Reset of

Jim Risch (R., Idaho) will preside over a hearing of the committee set for Wednesday that will examine how to adjust American foreign policies to address contentious issues toward China. They include Beijing's military expansion in the South China Sea, China's global Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure initiative, and its plan to corner key technology markets through the Made in China 2025 program. "One of the things is to properly calibrate or re-calibrate where we are in this relationship," Risch said in an interview. "It's good to take stock in something like that more often." The hearing will hear testimony from former senator James Talent, a member of the congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and Oriana Skylar Mastro, a China expert and professor of security studies at Georgetown University....
Carlson and 'The Outrage Machine'
Nate Jackson: So it turns out that, more than a decade ago, Tucker Carlson said some insensitive, rude, and vile things … while he was talking with a shock jock. Shocking, we know. But leftists are on it.
While conversing with “Bubba The Love Sponge,” Carlson used salty, misogynistic, racist, and degrading language about women, blacks, Iraqis, and others. It was indeed objectionable. He also made comments defending white men for “creating civilization and stuff.” That’s an arguable point, regardless of the race-baiters’ “outrage.” In any case, the muckrakers at Media Matters — try not to laugh, but it’s a leftist website dedicated to finding conservative bias in the media — dug up those comments, fomenting hysteria and calls for boycotting and firing Carlson from the Fox News show he’s been hosting only since 2016.
Now, we’re not going to defend everything Carlson said. In fact, we’d likewise condemn a lot of it. But context matters, as does a simple question: Did Carlson’s comments reflect his actual beliefs? Leftists aren’t concerned with that. They’re too busy trying to get his scalp.
Carlson addressed the controversy in his monologue last night:
As anyone who’s ever been caught in its gears can tell you, the great American outrage machine is a remarkable thing. One day you’re having dinner with your family, imagining everything is fine. The next, your phone is exploding with calls from reporters. They read you snippets from a press release written by Democratic Party operatives. They demand to know how you could possibly have said something so awful and offensive. “Do you have a statement on how immoral you are?” It’s a bewildering moment, especially when the quotes in question are more than a decade old.
There’s really not that much you can do to respond. It’s pointless to try to explain how the words were spoken in jest, or taken out of context, or in any case bear no resemblance to what you actually think, or would want for the country. None of that matters. Nobody cares. You know the role you’re required to play: You are a sinner, begging the forgiveness of Twitter. So you issue a statement of deep contrition. You apologize profusely for your transgressions. You promise to be a better person going forward. With the guidance of your contrition consultants, you send money to whatever organization claims to represent the people you supposedly offended. Then you sit back and brace for a wave of stories about your apology, all of which are simply pretexts for attacking you again.
