 Is Slavery Really Gone?
Wednesday marked the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which banned slavery. Barack nObama observed the occasion, saying, "A hundred and fifty years proved the cure to be necessary but not sufficient. Progress proved halting, too often deferred. Newly freed slaves may have been liberated by the letter of the law, but their daily lives told another tale." He's right that systemic oppression has often been a part of America — indeed, the human experience. He called slavery "our nation's original sin" and described all the ways the struggle against it has unfolded over the years. It should go without saying that slavery was (and is) a vile institution.
What nObama failed to mention, however, is his own party's long history of guilt on the matter. The Democrats' "Great Society" has done nothing but run up trillions in debt to continue poverty. As Mark Alexander wrote on the 50th anniversary of that travesty, "The human tragedy of LBJ’s soul-crushing 'welfare' programs is incalculable. A rapidly growing permanent underclass, one utterly dependent on the state for its day-to-day existence, now constitutes the Great Society." By design, Democrats benefit politically from that dependence and permanent racial grievance. Also by design, the first black president has only made race relations worse.
Ironically, nObama also noted that former slaves "couldn’t protect themselves or their families from indignity or from violence." That would be thanks in part to gun control. And that terrible circumstance remains today on Democrats' urban poverty plantations, where gangs often rule the streets and the law-abiding are subject to severe gun restrictions to go along with high crime. Gun control began as a racist proposition, and it effectively remains one.
While our nation has sometimes fallen short of its own ideals (we are human, after all), rather than perpetually fomenting racial discontent we should remember that Liberty is colorblind and strive to achieve it in every arena.  -The Patriot Post

There Are Limits to National Security Preventing Jihadi Terror
Some put their trust in government programs. Others put their trust in super computers and their metadata. But there is only so much security the U.S. government can provide. During a hearing before the Senate Homeland and Governmental Affairs Committee, Deputy Assistant Commissioner at the Department of Homeland Security John Wagner said if Islamic State terrorists tried to enter the United States by crossing the border like jihadists did before the Paris attacks, only "some of them would have" been stopped by law enforcement. "Some of them would have been prevented from traveling here to begin with," Wagner said. "It's been reported some of them were identified to governments as being a national security risk already. There's information we would have received from their travel details that we're confidence we would have identified had they travelled to the U.S."
This assessment comes on the heels of a Senate report that declared the U.S. borders were no hindrance to a violent jihadist who wants to do this country harm. But a jihadist doesn't need to cross the border in order to attack America. On Wednesday, a Muslim 20-year-old man living in Minnesota was charged for trying to recruit dozens of people to support terrorist groups, one of them being the Islamic State. And despite countless calls of help from government officials to root out extremism, leaders in several Muslim communities are unwilling to do so. Contrary to what the Left may claim, the Second Amendment most definitely isn't obsolete.    -The Patriot Post

CBO: nObamaCare May Eliminate Two Million Full-Time Jobs
Last year, a Congressional Budget Office study found out what's in nObamaCare. To summarize: "CBO estimates that the ACA will reduce the total number of hours worked, on net, by about 1.5 to 2 percent during the period from 2017 to 2024... The reduction in CBO's projections of hours worked represents a decline in the number of full-time-equivalent workers of about 2.0 million in 2017, rising to about 2.5 million in 2024." The Office has just updated those figures through 2025, and the outlook even bleaker. The new report says, "The labor force is projected to be about 2 million full-time-equivalent workers smaller in 2025 under the ACA than it would have been otherwise." Furthermore, "[T]he estimated effect on the labor supply will be larger — a drop of 1.7 — if measured by the decline in total hours worked." The report flags three specific reasons
"Health insurance coverage expansions — comprising exchange subsidies, rules governing health insurance, and an expansion of the Medicaid program — are together expected to reduce the labor supply by 0.65 percentage points.
"The HI surtax is expected to reduce the labor supply by 0.12 percentage points.
"Other major provisions — a penalty on larger employers that do not offer insurance coverage, an excise tax on certain high-premium insurance plans, and a penalty on certain individuals who do not obtain coverage — are together expected to reduce the labor supply by 0.10 percentage point."
This should provide Republicans more ammo as they work to repeal the law. nObama, of course, would never repeal his own signature achievement. But evidence of its harmful effects is working against Barack nObama, and Republicans — assuming they don't implode — have a good shot at taking the White House in 2017, at which point repeal is more attainable. The Hill reports, "Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) pledged last week, during his most significant speech to date, that he planned to roll out a replacement plan for the healthcare law next year." If — and that's a huge if — the GOP plays its cards right, we can be rid of this colossal failure as early as 2017. And the equivalent of two million full time jobs could be saved as a result.   -The Patriot Post

A 'Fog' of Lying and Incompetence
A damning email released by Judicial Watch (JW) puts another exclamation point on how far the nObama administration and Hilly Clinton have been willing to go to protect their respective reputations at the expense of the truth. At 7:19 p.m. ET, on Sept. 11, 2012 — only hours after the attack in Benghazi had begun — former Department of Defense Chief of Staff Jeremy Bash notified leadership at the State Department that “we have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak.” Unfortunately, things were already "spinning up" at the White House.
The specific forces mentioned in the email were redacted by the nObama administration, which had the temerity to cite Exemption 5 of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), allowing it to withhold information based on the "Deliberative Process Privilege.”
The revelation stands in stark contrast to former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s testimony before lawmakers in 2013: "Time, distance, the lack of an adequate warning, events that moved very quickly on the ground prevented a more immediate response."
Former Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey echoed that assertion, insisting he stood by the assessment of an independent review board that concluded "interagency response was timely and appropriate, but there simply was not enough time, given the speed of the attacks, for armed U.S. military assets to have made a difference.”
Yet in a testy exchange with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Dempsey insisted assets weren’t sent because the State Department didn’t request them. "So it's the State Department's fault," McCain countered.
"I'm not blaming the State Department," Dempsey responded. "I'm sure they had their own assessment.”
They did indeed. "State colleagues: I just tried you on the phone but you were all in with S,” Bash wrote, in an apparent reference to then-Secretary of State Clinton. "After consulting with General Dempsey, General Ham and the Joint Staff, we have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak. They include a [REDACTED]. Assuming Principals agree to deploy these elements, we will ask State to procure the approval from host nation. Please advise how you wish to convey that approval to us [REDACTED]. Jeremy.”
The email arrived after the first attack at the consulate, but before the second attack at the the CIA annex. It was during the second attack when Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed by mortar fire while engaging the attackers. That was seven hours after the State Department informed the White House — in writing — that the mission in Benghazi was under attack.
The revelation of Bash's email appears to vindicate Benghazi whistleblower Gregory Hicks, deputy chief of mission of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli at the time of the attack. During his own testimony in 2013, Hicks claimed he was rebuffed by Washington when he requested a stronger response to the attack, noting that “if we had been able to scramble a fighter or aircraft or two over Benghazi as quickly as possible after the attack commenced, I believe there would not have been a mortar attack on the annex in the morning because I believe the Libyans would have split."    -The Patriot Post

Fed Judge Denies Texas to Block Syrian Refugee Settlement
{Warren Mass} ~ U.S. District Judge David Godbey of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas issued an order on December 9 denying Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's second application for a temporary restraining order to block the State Department, the International Rescue Committee, and other defendants from resettling Syrian refugees in Texas... Godbey’s decision was in response to a request filed by Paxton on December 9 on behalf of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. In this request, Paxton noted that there was new “evidence” that refugees pose potential danger, and he cited evidence that included statements that “terrorist organizations have infiltrated the very refugee program that is central to the dispute.” Paxton included in his new evidence statements by Representative Mike McCaul (R-Texas), a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, as well as statements of “security concern” by the Texas Department of Public Safety’s deputy director of Homeland Security.       http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/22109-federal-judge-denies-texas-request-to-block-syrian-refugee-settlement?utm_content=Rudy%20Tirre&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Read%20on%2E%2E%2E&utm_campaign=Federal%20Judge%20Denies%20Texas%20Request%20to%20Block%20Syrian%20Refugee%20Settlementcontent

Oil Price Decline Forces Alaska Governor to Propose an Income tax
{Bob Adelmann} ~ Alaska’s new reality was painfully obvious on Wednesday as Alaska’s Governor Bill Walker rolled out his budget for next year: an income tax (for the first time since 1980)... further budget cuts (he cut $1 billion out of the state’s $5 billion budget last year), increases in the alcohol and cigarette taxes, and a cut in the annual dividend paid to Alaskans from the state’s Permanent Fund. Ever since the Trans-Alaska Pipeline began generating massive revenues in 1976, the state has enjoyed using those revenues to pay for nearly everything. Last year those revenues provided 90 percent of the state government’s budget. This year it will be closer to 75 percent, and if oil and natural gas prices continue their freefall, those revenues will decline further. According to Walker, a 1.5-percent income tax will generate about $200 million, and a cut in the annual dividend payment to Alaskans will save another $650 million. He adds in a generous assumption that there will be another few hundred million to be squeezed out of the government’s budget. Walker is still left with a massive deficit approaching $2.5 billion.       http://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/energy/item/22108-oil-price-decline-forces-alaska-governor-to-propose-an-income-tax?utm_content=Rudy%20Tirre&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Read%20on%2E%2E%2E&utm_campaign=Federal%20Judge%20Denies%20Texas%20Request%20to%20Block%20Syrian%20Refugee%20Settlementcontent

nObama Going After Guns Without Congress
{Trey Sanchez} ~ The Associated Press is reporting that advisers to President nObama, including Valerie Jarrett, are "finalizing a proposal that would expand background checks on gun sales without congressional approval."... After the October shooting at the Oregon community college, nObama demanded "in short order" a proposal from his team for his review. It is reported that the president "was looking for ways to tighten gun laws without a vote in Congress." This would included ways to close the "gun show loophole," which is the left's go-to gun control topic. These proposals are nearly ready for nObama's perusal. In related news, and showing the extremes some on the left are willing to go, certain nObama voters want the president to go all the way -- not stopping at "reasonable regulation" -- but a complete and total ban of every gun in America. When is Congress going to stop this fool?       http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/obama-going-after-guns-without-congress

nObama Told NSC And FBI To ‘Downplay’ Terrorist Angle...
{Pamela Geller} ~ This is immoral and evil. The only thing more dangerous than the jihad threat is the jihad threat in the White House... As the mangled broken bodies of Americans at a Christmas party lay in a river of blood, nObama convened a meeting with the National Security Council and the heads of other federal enforcement agencies to discuss a public relations strategy. “A public relations strategy.” Not a counter-terror strategy. Not a plan to fly to San Bernardino to meet with the families of the deceased. Not an emergency meeting to address and and examine his failed policies that led to this catastrophic intel failure. Downplay Islamic terror. More sharia in the wake of jihad slaughter.
.
Waiting for a commander-in-chief   {Jim Talent} ~ After President nObama’s speech from the Oval Office, it’s evident that his administration is not going to take significant additional steps to deal with ISIS during the next twelve months... That’s disappointing, especially since there are prominent figures on the left in other countries who do recognize the threat posed by ISIS. As an example, watch this stirring speech given by Hillary Benn, the Labour Party’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, in the House of Commons last week. The last few minutes are especially powerful.
nwe0_3IUVqpy9c2cY310k9NztWn3B9i3V0d7OGHXLrLBL0yGoNWzp3yygZatVB3zseT_qOkTfwFOPlFOK6QRnM2a01OwamTw_mNRFIo3Ta3iphRcCJDZK51TMSFN5NZOP8ukjuvPHvn2bg0hlWTxnFLJ1ZEsQEhWQadlhuTTGnk2=s0-d-e1-ft#%3Ca%20rel%3Dnofollow%20href=
That makes it even more important that the next president must come into office prepared to defeat ISIS. A good plan will require doing a number of things in a number of places at the same time, and probably for a long time.  House Select Committee on Benghazi Interviews Its 61st Witness
{Kemberlee Kaye} ~ Out of the spotlight, the House Select Committee on Benghazi quietly conducted its sixty-first interview Thursday... “The Select Committee is on track to complete more than 70 witness interviews before releasing its report in just a few months. And while our investigators are still waiting to receive some documents necessary to complete their work, they have already obtained and reviewed roughly 100,000 pages. These witnesses and documents come from the Department of State, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, the White House, the CIA and elsewhere, and the majority of them were never examined by a congressional committee. For example, the Select Committee is the first and only Benghazi investigation to include the Secretary of State’s emails, and the first to request Ambassador Chris Stevens’ emails. This thorough, fact-centered approach to finding the truth will provide the final, definitive accounting of what happened before, during and after the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attacks, and help prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again.” Yesterday, the Select Committee interviewed its 60th witness to date, questioning Jeffrey Feltman, the former Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. This was one of five scheduled interviews announced by the Select Committee last week.        http://legalinsurrection.com/2015/12/house-select-committee-on-benghazi-interviews-its-61st-witness/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LegalInsurrection+%28Le%C2%B7gal+In%C2%B7sur%C2%B7rec%C2%B7tion%29

 Palestinians' Biggest Tragedy: Failed Leadership
{Khaled Abu Toameh} ~ Since June 2013, the Rafah border crossing, the sole crossing point between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, has been closed for most of the time... Last week, the Egyptians opened the border crossing for two days, allowing a few hundred Palestinians to cross in both directions. These figures indicate that the Egyptians have stepped up security measures along their shared border with the Gaza Strip over the past few years. In addition to the continued closure of the Rafah terminal, the Egyptian army continues to destroy dozens of smuggling tunnels between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. In recent weeks, the Egyptians have been pumping seawater into the tunnels, causing most of them to collapse.       http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/7028/palestinians-failed-leadership

Dem Senator wants to make it much harder to screen immigrants
{Jeff Dunetz} ~ Talk about being out of touch with America. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has added an amendment to a bill on Nuclear safety... It’s a “sense of the senate bill” (a collective opinion of the senate) that the U.S. government should be stopped from barring any individual from entering the country based on their religion. While on first glance it seems not so bad, Leahy’s amendment is a first possible step toward stopping the government for example, from banning a proven follower of radical Islam from moving to the United States. The original bill, S-1318 was written to outlaw transporting any WMD material into the country on a ship. So the Leahy amendment has nothing to do with the bill.  “Sense of” resolutions can also be added as amendments to regular House or Senate bills. Even when added to regular bills, “sense of” amendments have no force law. But that doesn’t mean that if it gets enough support, after passing,  a “sense of” amendment can’t be reintroduced as a regular bill. By the way “sense of” bills only need 50 votes (no filibuster). Also, foreign governments pay close attention to them as evidence of shifts in U.S. foreign policy priorities. So it sends the message to ISIS come on down and visit America.

 Wishing Terrorism Away
{Larry Elder} ~ When asked why President Barack nObama insisted on pursuing a nuclear deal with Iran, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said... "I think that the pursuit of the agreement is based on the President's hope that over a 10-year period with the sanctions being lifted that the Iranians will become a constructive stakeholder in the international community. That — that as their economy begins to grow again, that — that they will abandon their ideology, their theology, their revolutionary principles, their meddling in various parts of the region. And, frankly, I believe that's very unrealistic." The very morning of the Paris attacks, nObama called ISIS/ISIL "contained." And hours before last month's al-Qaida-claimed hotel attacks in the capital of Mali, Africa, which killed 20, Secretary of State John hanoi-Kerry pronounced al-Qaida "neutralized." Even after the Paris attacks, nObama summoned only enough indignation to describe the attacks as a "setback." Meanwhile, the equally leftist, equally anti-war French president Francois Hollande called the attacks an "act of war," and promised, "France, because it was foully, disgracefully and violently attacked, will be unforgiving with the barbarians from Daesh (ISIS)."

The Muslim Brotherhood's Plan for America
{Onan Coca} ~ Brigitte Gabriel is one of the world’s leading defenders of speech and women’s rights. She is the President of ACT for America and she was recently speaking at the Family Research Council’s Watchmen on the Wall conference... Her speech was about the threat of radical Islam, and she focused on the Muslim Brotherhood’s plan for our nation. In 2004, federal investigators discovered a Muslim Brotherhood memorandum during a search of a northern Virginia home. The memorandum, written by Mohamed Akram for the Muslim Brotherhood’s Shura Council, described a “civilization jihad” aimed at North America. It stated: “The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.” This explanatory memorandum also included a list of 29 Muslim Brotherhood connected organizations in the U.S. The memorandum was entered into evidence at the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial in 2007-2008. You can see the plan here.

Tim Scott, who evidently has not received the memo explaining that politics is a grim and bitter business, laughs easily and often, as when, during lunch in this city’s humming downtown, he explains that South Carolina’s Low country is benefiting from what are called “halfbacks.” These are migrants who moved from Northern states to Florida in search of warmth but, finding high prices and congestion, then moved halfway back, settling in South Carolina. Doing so, they have located in the state where, Scott believes and history suggests, the 2016 Republican presidential nomination will begin to come to closure.
.
Since picking Ronald Reagan over John Connally and George H.W. Bush in 1980, South Carolina’s Republican primary electorate has sided with the eventual nominee every four years, with the exception of 2012, when Newt Gingrich from neighboring Georgia was rewarded for denouncing as “despicable” a journalist’s question during a debate here. This year, South Carolina votes just 10 days before the selection of convention delegates accelerates with the March 1 “SEC primary,” so named because five of the 12 primaries that day are in Southern states represented in that football conference.
.
The Human Snarl, a.k.a. Donald Trump, is leading polls here, where South Carolinians share the national consensus that, in Scott’s mild words, “however it is today is not the way it should be.” But it remains to be seen whether Republicans will vote for Trump while so warmly embracing the senator who is his stylistic antithesis. Scott is “an unbridled optimist” (his description) who thinks Republican chances in 2016 depend on whether their nominee is an “aspirational leader” or someone “selling fear.” Scott’s un-Trumpian demeanor is both a cause and an effect of his popularity: He was elected with 61 percent of the vote last year to complete the term of a senator who resigned. Which is why 13 of the Republican presidential candidates have eagerly accepted his invitations to hold town meetings with him. He took Ohio Gov. John Kasich to Hilton Head because it has so many Ohioans, some of them halfbacks. All the candidates covet Scott’s endorsement, which will happen only if, as the Feb. 20 vote draws near, polls show a close race, perhaps a four-point difference between the leaders.
.
This could be a choice between two of Scott’s Senate colleagues, Florida’s Marco Rubio and Texas’s Ted Cruz. If, he says, South Carolinians choose well — “not sending independents fleeing in the opposite direction” — the United States will be en route to a Republican presidency.
.
Scott, 50, became a congressman by defeating in a Republican primary the son of Strom Thurmond, the Dixiecrat presidential candidate in 1948 and then eight-term U.S. senator. In 2013, Scott became the second African American Republican senator since Reconstruction (Ed Brooke of Massachusetts was the first), and today he and New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker are the Senate’s only African Americans.

Henry Olsen of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, whose specialty is conservative politics, says that among the four states that vote in February (the others are Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada), South Carolina’s electorate “best mirrors the nation’s.”
.
Writing for National Review Online, Olsen says the state’s primary electorate closely reflects the national balance among the GOP’s four factions — “moderates and liberals” (32 percent), “somewhat conservatives” (32 percent), “very conservative evangelicals” (28 percent) and “very conservative seculars” (6 percent). Iowa, says Olsen, favors candidates who are very religious and conservative, New Hampshire favors moderates, Nevada favors conservative seculars. Here, however, a dominant cohort is that which Olsen calls the national party’s “ballast” — the “somewhat conservatives.”
.
South Carolina’s primary 11 weeks from now will be as distant from the state’s 1980 primary that chose Reagan as Reagan’s first presidential victory later that year was from Franklin Roosevelt’s last victory in 1944. And when South Carolina voted in 1980, the huge and still growing Boeing plant in North Charleston, the investment by Mercedes to build a plant in North Charleston and the BMW plant in Spartanburg were still in its future. As were the halfbacks who are another reason South Carolina no longer has stereotypical Deep South demographics.
.
And why whichever Republican wins here will have done so in the first 2016 contest that approximates the electorates of the swing states that will determine the 45th president. This fact must be deeply satisfying to 43-year-old Nikki Haley, South Carolina’s Indian American governor, and to Scott, who was born 44 days after enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that made all of this possible.
