BALTIMORE MAYOR UNDER SCRUTINY: “FBI and IRS agents on Thursday raided the home and city hall offices of Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh as part of an investigation into possible public corruption… Pugh took a leave of absence from her position earlier this month after it was revealed that she made $500,000 selling copies of her Healthy Holly children’s-health book to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) while sitting on the system’s board. In a letter recently obtained by 2ndVote, the president of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation apparently responded to a customer concerned with the bank’s support for Planned Parenthood: ‘Bank of America does not make any direct grants to Planned Parenthood.’ Bank of America did contribute over $50,000 in what appears to be so-called ‘matching gifts’ to the abortion giant through its foundation in 2017.” (2ndVote)

INCARCERATION DROPS: “The number of people serving prison or jail sentences in the United States dropped 10 percent over the decade ending in 2017, the Department of Justice said Thursday, the latest evidence that a lower crime rate and changing sentencing policies are having an effect on the number of people behind bars. In a bipartisan appeal, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) and ranking Republican member Michael McCaul (R-TX) asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to work with Congress on deciding whether and how to restart aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, the so-called “Northern Triangle.” I testified before that these US-supported programs help stem the tide of violence that spurs desperate people to abandon their countries. It is good news that there is a strong bipartisan consensus supporting US aid programs in Central America. As part of the US’s overall border strategy, about $500 million a year is allocated to address gang violence, poverty, corruption, and other factors that push tens of thousands of Central Americans to flee each month. Aid programs have led to dramatic declines in violence, extortion and general criminality. Anti-gang programs in the region have helped law enforcement agencies crack down on violent gangs that menace every major US community. By bolstering security and improving conditions for doing business, US assistance helps create new jobs and better wages in areas struggling with poverty. Members of Congress have done their homework; indeed, they helped design the US “Northern Triangle” strategy and imposed conditions on what local governments must do to qualify for US-funded programs. Members and staff of Congress also have conducted on-site visits to measure the effectiveness of US aid, leading them to conclude that such projects are not only worthy, they are more important than ever... Instead, they celebrate Satan as “the ultimate rebel”, and they relish in using the symbol of Satan to greatly upset Christians. The Satanic Temple was founded in 2013, and from the very beginning, it was clear that they were primarily a political movement. In fact, they openly tell prospective members that the only real requirement for joining is to believe “in the political and secular actions” of the group…Previously, Satanism in America had always been a shadowy underground movement, but the Satanic Temple has changed all that. Political Editors: President Donald Trump took another step this week in working to unwind Barack scumbag/liar-nObama’s terrible Iran nuclear deal. In a statement, the White House announced, “Trump has decided not to reissue Significant Reduction Exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May. This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue.” Recall that last year Trump granted six-month waivers to eight countries, temporarily exempting them from the sanctions imposed against Iran following the president’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. That exemption period has come to an end, and Trump is following through on his commitment to isolate the Iranian regime so as to get the mullahs to give up their pursuit of a nuclear weapon.
Predictably Iranian officials responded by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, an area through which a fifth of the world’s oil trade travels. China, one of the country’s granted a sanction exemption, indicated that it is unlikely to end oil trade with Iran. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang argued, “China’s cooperation with Iran is open, transparent, reasonable and legitimate, and should be respected.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned, “We’ll no longer grant any exemptions. We are going to zero across the board. We’ll continue to enforce sanctions and monitor compliance and any nation or entity interacting with Iran should do its diligence and err on the side of caution; the risks are simply not going to be worth the benefits.” He added, “How long we’ll remain there at zero depends solely on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s senior leaders.”
Pompeo then reiterated, “The goal remains simple: to deprive the outlaw regime of the funds it has used to destabilize the Middle East for four decades and incentivize Iran to behave like a normal country.” That’s a great goal, but frankly it’ll take regime change to achieve it.
