{thepoliticalinsider.com} ~ President Trump is headed to the southern border on Thursday... The announcement comes as Democrat Senator Chris Coons says that Trump’s offer to construct a steel-slat barrier along the southern border is a step in the right direction. The Delaware senator, along with many of his colleagues, has ruled out a pure concrete wall as a feasible and effective barrier along the southern border. But, Trump’s request for a steel-slat barrier is more realistic, and, thus, represents “progress” towards ending the government shutdown, according to Coons. This admission comes despite Democrat leaders refusing to grant Trump even a penny on his border wall. The senator appeared on Fox & Friends this morning to explain why the steel palisade is a “minor but important” step in the right direction: It’s nice that Sen. Coons thinks Trump is compromising by dropping his request for a concrete barrier, but the steel fence idea isn’t new. President Trump made such a proposal via Twitter weeks ago...

{americanmilitarynews.com} ~ Legislation named for a Virginia Beach woman was signed into law by President Donald Trump on Monday, hours before the year would come to an end... The Ashanti Alert Act, first introduced in Congress by Rep. Scott Taylor earlier this year, will help public safety agencies quickly locate a missing adult between the ages of 18 and 65. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives in September. The law is named in honor of Ashanti Billie, a 19-year-old Virginia Beach resident who disappeared from a Virginia Beach military base last year. She was later found dead in North Carolina. Police were unable to issue an Amber Alert after her disappearance because it can only be used if the missing person is under 18. Billie’s parents, Brandy and Meltony Billie, told a Pilot reporter previously that they thought an alert could have saved her life. “Out of this dark tragedy, light and hope will come for families across the country in 2019,” Taylor, R-Virginia Beach, tweeted on Monday after Trump signed the legislation...

{washingtontimes.com} ~ The White House may assert executive privilege to withhold sections of special counsel dirty cop-Robert Mueller’s final report from Congress and the public... according to a report Monday. President Trump’s personal attorney Rudolph Giuliani told Bloomberg News that the administration will look at the report to see if there is a “valid claim” of executive privilege. Specifically, administration attorneys may block any information related to Mr. Trump’s time in the White House or the transition, Bloomberg reported. “We reserve the right. We don’t know if we have to, but we haven’t waived,” Mr. Giuliani told the news outlet. Mr. Giuliani also said the White House would be willing to mount a legal fight to keep certain matters out of the public view, if necessary, Bloomberg reported. The report detailing Mr. dirty cop-Mueller’s investigation into allegations of ties between the Trump campaign and Russia and other crimes is expected to be completed in February. There is no mandate that any part of Mr. dirty cop-Mueller’s final report be released to Congress or the public. Under federal law, the special counsel is only required to submit his report to Justice Department leaders...

{westernjournal.com} ~ House Democrats unveiled details of a sweeping federal elections reform package Friday that, if enacted... would immediately restore voting rights to convicted felons who have completed their prison sentences nationwide. The bill, titled the “For the People Act,” would also mandate automatic voter registration nationwide for eligible voters that provide information to state government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. The act “makes automatic voter registration a mandate nationwide — not just in certain states or in certain counties — but nationwide,” Rep. John Lewis of Georgia said at a news conference announcing the bill Friday. “We must get there, and we will get there, as Democrats.” “It restores voting rights to felons who paid their debt to society,” Lewis added. .@HouseDemocrats are keeping our promise to the American people & unveiling  #HR1, the #ForThePeople Act, a historic reform package to restore the promise of our democracy, end Washington’s culture of corruption, & reduce the role of money in our politics. https://t.co/vBMx8bQb1T — Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) January 4, 2019 The bill, also known as House Resolution 1, or H.R. 1, includes dozens of measuresfrom House Democrats, including election security, campaign finance and anti-corruption reforms. {thehill.com} ~ The newly Democratic-controlled House overhauled a 181-year-old rule that banned hats from the floor to accommodate lawmakers who wear religious headwear... The ban was lifted in a provision included in a rules package that the House passed in a 234-197 vote on Thursday. The rule change to overhaul the ban on head coverings, which has reportedly been in place since 1837, now reads: “During the session of the House, a Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner may not wear nonreligious headdress or a hat or remain by the Clerk’s desk during the call of the roll or the counting of ballots.” The move also arrived the same day Congress welcomed its first two female Muslim members, Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib(Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.). The argument to lift the ban was proposed by RepNancy  Pulosi (D-Calif.) last month and later by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) to accommodate Omar, who is the first member of Congress to wear a religious headscarf. Omar, who also co-authored the proposal, took to Twitter to celebrate the news on Friday. “Yesterday, Congress voted to lift a 181 year ban on headwear to make the #116th Congress more inclusive for all,” Omar said...

A View of the Shutdown From the Border

by Thomas Gallatin:  As the partial government shutdown enters its third week, there is still no immediate end in sight. In fact, if anything President Donald Trump upped the ante over the weekend by suggesting that he might use the military to build the wall after declaring the border situation a national emergency. Of course, if Trump were to attempt such an action it would be immediately challenged in the courts, and historical precedent in such cases does not favor the president. But we suspect that threat and his insistence that he’s willing for a shutdown to last for years are simply shots across the Democrat bow. Meanwhile, as both sides continue to dig in, some Americans are taking matters into their own hands, as in the case of Yellow National Park, where private businesses have banded together to keep the park open for the tourism their businesses depend upon.

As for the situation at the border in the midst of this shutdown, the best people to hear from are those actually dealing with the situation on the frontlines. Here’s a sampling of their perspective on why an actual physical wall is desperately needed:
Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, said, “I’ve been a Border Patrol agent for 21 years. I can personally tell you … that walls actually work. … If you interview Border Patrol agents, they will tell you that walls work. … They have been an absolute necessity for Border Patrol agents in securing the border. We need those physical barriers, and we appreciate President Trump and all of his efforts in getting us those physical barriers.
Hector Garza, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council and a Border Patrol agent in Texas, argues, “We’re talking about murderers, rapists, [and] people that commit very serious crimes in this country. … These criminal aliens that have been released from jail [and] that have been deported will come right back into the United States. However, if we had a physical barrier, if we had a wall, we would be able to stop that. … We ask our congressmen to fund border security and fund the border wall.
Finally, this assessment from Acting ICE Director Ronald Vitiello: “2,000 people are coming to the border each and every day. … Loopholes in the law [are] encouraging people to come to that border. … We are running out of resources and the status quo is not acceptable. [Democrats] are saying that a wall doesn’t work. Agents need an enduring capability to slow people down [at the border]. It provides an anchor for them to add technology, access roads, and patrol response to protect our border. We always have a safer border where we have that barrier. People who don’t believe it works — why do they have fences around their homes and lock their doors at night? … This is getting bottled up in politics. … I was in the Border Patrol for 33 years. … Walls work.”  ~The Patriot Post
