The Big Hole in the China Trade Agreement

{ gatestoneinstitute.org } ~ There's something missing from the "Phase One" trade agreement with China, announced Friday. And it's something critically important... Yet, Larry Kudlow, President Trump's director of the National Economic Council, appeared not to know about it afterwards. "We will see," said Kudlow in response to Maria Bartiromo on "Sunday Morning Futures," her Fox News Channel show, as she asked him about Beijing's new "cybersecurity" rules. "There's a large IP chapter in this deal and there's also a large forced technology transfer chapter in this deal. I don't think we know enough about these new Chinese rules and we'll have to look at that and by the way if they do violate them of course we will take action." Bartiromo was referring to two sets of Chinese rules. On December 1, Beijing implemented the Multi-Level Protection Scheme 2.0, issued pursuant to the 2016 Cybersecurity Law. On January 1, China's Cryptography Law becomes effective. These measures prohibit foreign companies from encrypting data so that it cannot be read by the Chinese central government and the Communist Party of China. Businesses will be required to turn over encryption keys. Companies will not be able to employ virtual private networks to keep data secret, and some believe they will no longer be allowed to use private servers. Together, these measures allow Beijing to take all the data and communications of foreign companies. Beijing's complete visibility into the networks of foreign companies will have extremely disadvantages consequences. For instance, Chinese officials will be permitted, under Chinese law, to share seized information with state enterprises. This sharing means the enterprises will weaponize the information against their foreign competitors...

According to Bloomberg analysis, German automakers sold approximately seven million cars to China in 2018. The Chinese Ambassador to Germany said this weekend: ” “If Germany were to take a decision that leads to Huawei’s exclusion from the German market, there will be consequences. The Chinese government will not stand idly by.” […] The Chinese ambassador in Berlin has stirred up a fresh controversy over the tech giant Huawei after he threatened “consequences” if it was excluded from Germany. Wu Ken’s comments – in which he pointed to the importance of the Chinese market to Germany’s car industry – came amid an intense debate about the company’s role in building 5G networks, which the United States has warned poses a security threat. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government has been widely accused of bowing to Chinese pressure after she ruled out banning Huawei from the country’s 5G network. Lawmakers from her ruling coalition are seeking to override her decision with a bill that would impose a ban on “untrustworthy” 5G vendors without explicitly naming Huawei...

Illegals Line Up Early for Newly
Available NY Driver’s Licenses

{ freebeacon.com } ~ New York's "Green Light" law, which allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses without having to provide proof of citizenship, went into effect over the weekend... Applicants are already lining up outside DMV offices in the state, according to News 12 Westchester. Some county clerks expressed concern over the quantity of new license applications, saying that they have not received enough training or sufficient equipment to handle the influx. The law requires an applicant 16 years old or older to provide documents showing name, date of birth, and proof of residency in New York state. It does not require a Social Security number, but does mandate that noncitizen applicants sign an affidavit stating they have never been issued a Social Security number. In place of a Social Security number, the state will now accept a valid foreign passport, foreign driver's license, or permanent resident card, among other forms of documentation. The law, passed in the summer of 2019, has provoked numerous legal challenges. A district judge threw out a lawsuit from a county clerk challenging the law on the grounds that it put the state's policy in direct conflict with federal immigration law. The judge did not uphold or negate the law's legality, but ruled the clerk did not have standing to challenge it. The lawsuit was the second such legal challenge to be thrown out by a judge. A third challenge from a Niagara County clerk is still pending. The Department of Justice expressed concern over the law as well. "The Act's disclosure restrictions are wide-reaching and appear aimed at frustrating the federal government’s enforcement of the immigration laws," the department's attorneys said. New York is the 13th state to enact a "Green Light" policy, and it will impact an estimated 882,000 people in the state. "Local officials, including the county clerks who run DMV offices, cannot choose which laws they like and which they will disregard," DMV spokeswoman Lisa Koumjian said, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. "If a clerk is unwilling to follow state law, he or she should resign their office."

Coast Guard: Russian Surveillance Ship
Operating in ‘Unsafe’ Manner off East Coast

{ news.usni.org } ~ Russian surveillance ship Viktor Leonov has been operating unsafely off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina in the vicinity of U.S. naval bases... according to a U.S. Coast Guard safety bulletin issued on Sunday. “The United States Coast Guard has received reports indicating that the RFN Viktor Leonov (AGI-175) has been operating in an unsafe manner off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia,” read the notice from Coast Guard in Charleston, S.C. “This unsafe operation includes not energizing running lights while in reduced visibility conditions, not responding to hails by commercial vessels attempting to coordinate safe passage another erratic movements.” The notice went on to advise mariners to, “maintain a sharp lookout and use extreme caution when navigating in proximity to this vessel.” The Russian Navy has had a long history of sending surveillance ships to monitor U.S. naval bases of the East Coast, including Naval Station Norfolk, Va., Naval Station Mayport, Fla. and the nuclear submarine base at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga. Leonov was reported off Kings Bay in 2018. “We are aware of Russia’s naval activities, including the deployment of intelligence collection ships in the region,” a U.S. Northern Command spokesperson told The Washington Times. “While we won’t discuss specific measures being taken, NORAD and USNORTHCOM routinely conduct air and maritime operations to ensure the defense of the United States and Canada.” CNN reported Leonov was being shadowed by Norfolk-based U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG-72). On Sunday, U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG-71) was shadowed by Russian corvette Vyshny Volochyok while the U.S. ship was operating off the coast of Romania in the Black Sea.

{ jpost.com } ~ The Sudanese transitional government is slated to close the offices of foreign terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah... according to a report in the Middle East Eye. The Qatar-regime-financed online news outlet reported that, “A reliable Sudanese source close to Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok’s office disclosed to Middle East Eye that the government will close the offices of foreign groups designated as terrorists by the US, including Hamas and Hezbollah.” According to the report, “The Sudanese source who spoke to MEE, who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said: ‘The government will close the offices of Hamas and Hezbollah and any other Islamic group designated as terrorist groups that have a presence in Sudan, because Sudan has nothing actually to do with these groups – and the interests of Sudan are above everything.’” The Sudanese source added: “Actually, they have hidden their presence in the past few years, but we won’t tolerate any individual’s presence in the future.” The outlet said the action to evict Hamas and Hezbollah from the North African country was meant to convince the United States government to delist Sudan as a state-sponsor of terrorism. The US proscribed Sudan a state-sponsor of terrorism in 1993 after it hosted the now-deceased al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. In early December, the US and Sudan agreed to begin exchanging ambassadors again after more than two decades. US-Sudan relations have improved since the Sudanese people overthrew the dictatorship of former president Omar al-Bashir. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not address the terrorism classification at the time of Abdallah’s December visit.

scumbag-Comey Rebuked for False Spin on Horowitz ReportThomas Gallatin: scumbag-James Comey once again displayed why he is the worst kind of lawman. In a hard-hitting interview with Fox News’s Chris Wallace on Sunday, the former FBI director was left spinning answers to the damning findings of Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s investigation into the FBI’s abuse of FISA applications. From the moment the report was released, scumbag-Comey has downplayed the significance of Horowitz’s findings, distancing himself from any culpability for the “errors and mistakes” and painting himself and the FBI as the real victims.
scumbag-Comey feigned that he would “be very concerned about [the IG’s findings] and diving into it,” but he pushed back on any notion that anyone in the FBI may have acted with intentionality against Donald Trump. Evidently, scumbag-Comey doesn’t believe the overt anti-Trump and pro-scumbag/liar-Hillary text messages between former FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page showed any bias. Hogwash.
While admitting that errors and mistakes did occur, scumbag-Comey chalked them up to simple “sloppiness” that was done in good faith. (You know, kind of like scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton’s email server.) Yet Wallace noted that scumbag-Comey had previously asserted having full confidence in the FBI’s handling of the FISA warrants. scumbag-Comey responded, “I was overconfident in the procedures that the FBI and Justice Department have built over 20 years. I thought they were robust enough.” He then deflected, “It’s incredibly hard to get a FISA [warrant]. I was overconfident in those because [Horowitz is] right: There was real sloppiness.”
scumbag-Comey also lamely claimed that he was too distant from the Trump investigation to have been aware of the “significant errors” that occurred under his watch — even on the FISA warrant applications he repeatedly signed off on. “As the director, you’re not kept informed on the details of an investigation,” scumbag-Comey asserted. “So no, in general I didn’t know what they’d learned from the sub-source. I didn’t know the particulars of the investigation.”
Wallace wasn’t buying that excuse. He pushed back, “But this isn’t some investigation, sir. This is an investigation of the campaign of the man who is the president of the United States. You had just been through a firestorm investigating scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton. I would think if I had been in your position I would have been on that like a junkyard dog.” scumbag-Comey then played Barack scumbag/liar-nObama’s favorite trick, claiming he was just too busy running a massive agency and that it would have been “impossible” to know all the details behind the FISA warrant application.
In one of the more telling exchanges, Wallace asked scumbag-Comey if he would have resigned following Horowitz’s report if he had still been the FBI director. “No. I don’t think so,” scumbag-Comey answered, adding, “There are mistakes I consider more consequential than this during my tenure.” Yikes.
Finally, scumbag-Comey blasted as “an irresponsible statement” Attorney General William Barr’s assessment that the IG’s findings left open the possibility to infer bad faith by certain members within the FBI. Pot, meet kettle. scumbag-Comey’s bad faith — and higher loyalty to scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton — has been on display for some time to anyone willing to look. And as for scumbag-Comey’s pathetically self-serving admissions, former Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy aptly summed it up: “Sometimes … it’s better late than never, and sometimes it’s just too damn late.
