{ frontpagemag.com } ~ The Whistleblower Protection Act was put into place for the stated purpose of fighting waste and mismanagement in the civil service... It’s a controversial piece of legislation, but its purpose is clear. As a Senate report on the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act put it, “What is needed is a means to protect the Pentagon employee who discloses billions of dollars in cost overruns, the GSA employee who discloses widespread fraud, and the nuclear engineer who questions the safety of certain nuclear plants. These conscientious civil servants deserve statutory protection rather than bureaucratic harassment and intimidation.” This does not cover a partisan effort to undermine the President of the United States. It does not mean a government employee taking issue with a president’s foreign policy. A whistleblower exposes structural waste, mismanagement and abuse within the civil service, among government contractors and in varied ways within the private sector. This is meant to protect employees who blow the whistle on misbehavior, not to serve as cover for assorted political agendas. In the Trump era, whistleblowing and partisan leaks to the media have been conflated by the media. Partisan government workers, some openly aligning with the “resistance” and participating in partisan groups within government agencies, have sought to undermine administration policies through leaks. These leaks were in turn meant to generate congressional investigations of cabinet officials. The impeachment effort against President Trump takes that ongoing tactic to the ultimate extreme...   https://cms.frontpagemag.com/fpm/2019/10/impeachment-built-trap-obama-created-romney-daniel-greenfield

by clarionproject.org ~ The U.S. has now agreed to retreat from the Syrian-Turkish border, making way for a planned invasion by Turkey... The result will most certainly mean slaughter for the Kurdish forces there, the most faithful U.S. ally in the region and the most effective force to date against ISIS. Trump said he is saving the American taxpayers from paying for the continued imprisonment of ISIS fighters, leaving that job to Turkey. Yet, since ISIS broke onto the scene, Turkey has allowed them free reign of operation as well as being a huge consumer of their renegade oil one of the main sources of funding for the terror group. The Trump administration also recently ordered a retreat from a U.S. military base in Qatar, moving the Middle East Command Control to South Carolina. What’s going on? Listen as Clarion Project Editor Meira Svirsky and Arab Affairs Analyst and Shillman Fellow Ran Meir discuss this latest and most concerning development.

San Francisco, Hostage to the Homeless

{ city-journal.org } ~ Everyone’s on drugs here . . . and stealing,” an ex-felon named Shaku explains as he rips open a blue Popsicle wrapper with his teeth. Shaku is standing in an encampment of tents, trash, and bicycles, across from San Francisco’s Glide Memorial Church... Another encampment-dweller lights a green crack pipe and passes it around. A few paces down the street, a gaunt man swipes a credit card through a series of parking meters to see if it has been reported stolen yet. For the last three decades, San Francisco has conducted a real-life experiment in what happens when a society stops enforcing bourgeois norms of behavior. The city has done so in the name of compassion toward the homeless. The results have been the opposite: street squalor and misery have increased, even as government expenditures have ballooned. Yet the principles that have guided the city’s homelessness policy remain inviolate: homelessness is a housing problem; it is involuntary; and its persistence is the result of inadequate public spending. These propositions are readily disproved by talking to people living on the streets. Shaku’s assessment of drug use among the homeless is widely shared. Asked if she does drugs, a formerly homeless woman, just placed in a city-subsidized single-room-occupancy (SRO) hotel, responds incredulously: “Is that a trick question?” A 33-year-old woman from Alabama, who now lives in a tent in an industrial area outside downtown, says: “Everyone out here has done something—drugs, you name it.” On Sutter Avenue, a wizened 50-year-old named Jeff slumps over his coffee cup at 7:30 AM, one hand holding a sweet roll, the other playing with his beard. A half-eaten muffin sits next to him on a filthy blanket. “I use drugs, alcohol, all of it,” he tells me, his eyes closed, as a pair of smiling German tourists deposit a peach on his blanket. Last night it was speed, he says, which has left him just a “little bit high” this morning. “The whole Tenderloin is for drugs,” Jeff observes, before nodding off again. An inadequate supply of affordable housing is not the first thing that comes to mind when conversing with San Francisco’s street denizens. Their behavioral problems—above all, addiction and mental illness—are too obvious...  https://www.city-journal.org/san-francisco-homelessness?utm_source=City+Journal+Update&utm_campaign=d1f3e498f4-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_10_07_01_31&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6c08930f2b-d1f3e498f4-109328273

{ algemeiner.com } ~ The Israeli security establishment is concerned that Iran may seek to strike the Jewish state in the same manner as it did a Saudi Arabian oil facility last month... local media reported on Sunday. The attack on the Abqaiq facility has been blamed directly on Iran and is believed to have been carried out using cruise missiles and drones launched from Iranian territory. Iran has denied responsibility. To discuss the issue, Israel’s security cabinet convened over the weekend for the first time since the September 17 elections. On the agenda was the growing threat of a direct conflict with Iran, Hebrew news website Mako  reported. Israeli officials and politicians have been more vocal in recent weeks regarding a serious and escalating security threat that has thus far gone unnamed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the inauguration of the new Knesset last week, said, “We are facing a huge security challenge that has been growing from week to week, in the last two months and especially in recent weeks.” “It’s not spin or a whim, anyone who knows the details knows how true they are,” Netanyahu added. Netanyahu said Iran’s “boldness and impudence are growing” and directly referenced the attack on the Saudi oil facility. He reminded the assembled MKs that Iran has pledged to destroy Israel and that the Jewish state must handle this threat “with the utmost seriousness.” President Reuven Rivlin, on the same occasion, referred to a security threat “that we have not known for many years.”...

{ apnews.com } ~ A second whistleblower has come forward with information about President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine... adding to the impeachment peril engulfing the White House and potentially providing new leads to Democrats in their unfurling investigation of Trump’s conduct. Attorney Mark Zaid, who represents both whistleblowers, said in a text message to The Associated Press that the second person has spoken to the intelligence community’s internal watchdog and can corroborate information in the original whistleblower complaint. That document alleged that Trump pushed Ukraine’s president to investigate Democratic presidential candidate loose lips liar-Joe Biden’s family, prompting a White House cover-up. Crucially, the new whistleblower works in the intelligence field and has “firsthand knowledge” of key events, Zaid said. The emergence of the second whistleblower threatened to undermine arguments from Trump and his allies to discredit the original complaint. They have called it politically motivated, claimed it was filed improperly and dismissed it as unreliable because it was based on secondhand or third hand information. A rough transcript of Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, released by the White House, has already corroborated the complaint’s central claim that Trump sought to pressure Ukraine to investigate the loose lips liar-Bidens. The push came even though there was no evidence of wrongdoing by the former vice president or his son Hunter, who served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. Text messages from State Department officials revealed other details, including that Ukraine was promised a visit with Trump if the government would agree to investigate the 2016 election and Ukrainian gas company Burisma — the outline of a potential quid pro quo. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said word of a second whistleblower indicates a larger shift inside the government. “The president’s real problem is that his behavior has finally gotten to a place where people are saying, ‘Enough,’” Himes said...

'Impeach liar-Pelosi': Scores of Trump supporters greet
House Speaker in South Carolina
by Ellie Bufkin
{ washingtonexaminer.com } ~ Speaker of the House liar-Nancy Pelosi was met with scores of President Trump's supporters as she arrived to speak at a South Carolina Democratic Party fundraising event in Greenville on Friday... Protesters chanted, "Trump, Trump, Trump" and held up signs saying, "Impeach liar-Pelosi" and "Make America Great Again," among other statements in support of the president. Protests were organized by local chapters of the Republican Party to voice support for the president at a time in which congressional Democrats are ramping up their efforts to begin a formal impeachment inquiry. "She’s not doing anything for the American people,” Joan Boyce, who arrived hours ahead of liar-Pelosi, told the State, a local newspaper. “And this impeachment that she’s trying to push, it’s ridiculous. The country doesn’t want impeachment. All it’s doing is make people fight against each other, and that’s all she’s accomplishing." Boyce was joined by hundreds of Trump supporters who gathered to protest the arrival of the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives. "As South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says, a whole lot of a big nothing burger,” said Greenville County GOP Chairman Nate Leupp. “I think in the end, it’s going to backfire on the Democrats." liar-Pelosi echoed a now-familiar speech in support of impeachment of the president, noting that Sept. 17, the day Congress learned of the existence of the whistleblower complaint about Trump's controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was also "Constitution Day." From inside the Hyatt in Greenville on Friday, liar-Pelosi noted that this was a "sad time for our country."  https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/impeach-pelosi-scores-of-trump-supporters-greet-house-speaker-in-south-carolina

Harvard Can Continue to Discriminate

Brian Mark Weber:  October is here, and America’s most prestigious colleges and universities are teeming with young people eager to earn an elite degree and land a well-paying job. Unfortunately, far too many Asian-Americans never received the collegiate acceptance letter they rightfully deserved.

Their sin? Being Asian-American.

That’s the sorry state of affairs in American higher education — at least at Harvard University, which recently won a lawsuit brought against it by Students for Fair Admissions, a group opposed to racial preferences in college admissions. The charge? That Harvard  discriminates against Asian-American students who appear to be extraordinarily well qualified for admission, especially when their grades and test scores are compared to those of other racial minorities.

Last year, the Associated Press reported that the plaintiff group “says Harvard’s gatekeepers hold Asian-American applicants to a higher standard and discriminate against them using a subjective ‘personal rating’ that measures traits such as courage and likability. Using six years of school admissions data, the group found that Harvard officials consistently gave Asian-Americans the lowest scores in the personal rating, while scoring black and Hispanic students the highest. Asians fared well in other categories including academics, yet they were admitted at the lowest rate.”

Surely even Allison Burroughs, the scumbag/liar-nObama-appointed federal judge hearing the case, would flag such racially discriminatory (and therefore unconstitutional) behavior and rule in favor of Students for Fair Admissions, right?

Not so fast.

According to Quin Hillyer at The Washington Examiner, Burroughs admits that Asian-Americans would be admitted at higher rates if the admissions staff only looked at academic and extracurricular ratings. Hillyer adds, “Instead, they are admitted at a lower rate than white and black applicants, and at a significantly lower rate than applicants of other races with similar paper qualifications.”

But in classic leftist double-speak, Burroughs spun this clear-cut racial discrimination as an admirable characteristic of Harvard.

As she stated in her opinion, “Harvard did not offer a competing regression model to show that no statistically significant relationship between Asian American identity and the personal rating exists, and the Court therefore concludes that the data demonstrates a statistically significant and negative relationship between Asian American identity and the personal rating assigned by Harvard admissions officers, holding constant any reasonable set of observable characteristics.”

Seems like an open-and-shut case if there ever was one.

Yet Burroughs quickly dismissed the convincing data by concluding that “any causal relationship between Asian American identity and the personal rating must, therefore, have been sufficiently subtle to go unnoticed by numerous considerate, diligent, and intelligent admissions officers who were immersed in the admissions process.”

In other words, even though Harvard blatantly discriminates against Asian-Americans, the Harvard admissions staff is just too smart and thoughtful to have knowingly favored one group of students over another. And Judge Burroughs’s recommendation that Harvard admissions officials participate in bias training, while absolving them of any wrongdoing, is an affront to common sense.

Apparently, leftist policies that advance the interests of favored racial groups at the expense of other racial groups are sufficient justification for discrimination. This same twisted reasoning isn’t new. We saw it put into practice when Christian bakers were forced to bake special cakes for same-sex weddings under the rationale that it was necessary to trample upon the rights of one group in order to advance those of another.

As Paul Mirengoff writes at PowerLine, “Harvard’s admissions officers aren’t biased against Asian-Americans. Rather, they are biased in favor of African-Americans. Ridding them of that bias isn’t what Judge Burroughs has in mind. Indeed, she shares that bias, at least in her official capacity.”

Mirengoff further adds, “Bias training might be useful, though. It might enable Harvard to reject Asian-American applicants for racial reasons without expressing its disapproval of such applicants in stereotypical language. But why bother to cover things up when the judge has deemed Harvard’s admissions program not only lawful, but ‘very fine.’”

What a shame. After all the progress we’ve made to create a level playing field for all Americans, the very leftists who claim to be champions of equal rights are now engaging in the very behaviors they once rightly denounced.

Let’s hope this case is appealed to a higher court, and that the irrational conclusions of Judge Burroughs are reversed. Maybe then Asian-Americans can get a fair shot at an elite degree.   ~The Patriot Post
