Fed commits to unlimited bond purchases 

in bid to counter pandemic fallout

{ washingtonexaminer.com } ~ The Federal Reserve announced Monday morning that it was committing to buying an unlimited amount of bonds to counter the effects of the coronavirus pandemic... It also said that it had established a range of new programs to ensure the provision of credit in markets that have frozen up as sectors of the economy have been shut down. Together, Monday's actions rival or go beyond the Fed's emergency measures taken during the 2008 financial crisis. The announcement was also the third such surprise move by the central bank in the past month, as it had already lowered its target interest rate to zero. "The Federal Reserve is committed to use its full range of tools to support the U.S. economy in this challenging time," Fed officials said in a previously unscheduled monetary policy announcement. The decision was unanimous among the central bank's monetary policy committee members. The central bank noted that the first priority must be to address the spread of the coronavirus but said that “aggressive efforts” were justified to limit job losses and support a strong recovery once the virus abates. The Fed will create three new lending facilities: two to help create and then buy bonds issued by large corporations and help generate securities backed by student loans, auto loans, credit card loans, and loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration. The idea behind the facilities is that, by buying assets in markets for various kinds of bonds, they can provide liquidity in those markets and prevent other participants from having to engage in fire sales of bonds to get cash. Together, the facilities are meant to provide up to $300 billion in financing. WA State Officials Quietly Deciding Who 

Gets Medical Care When Hospitals Fill

{ westernjournal.com } ~ Washington state officials and clinicians have discussed the possibility of rationing health care across the state for coronavirus patients... Medical leaders in the state with the highest number of coronavirus deaths in the country — 74 as of Thursday — have begun preparing a bleak strategy to determine which patients will be denied medical care if the health system becomes overwhelmed, according to The New York Times.  The state fears a critical shortage of supplies to take care of coronavirus patients, especially ventilators, according to people on a conference call Wednesday. The leaders are considering a triage document to assess certain facts — including age, health and likelihood of survival — to determine who will get access to care and who will not. The statewide effort will ensure that individual doctors and hospitals will not have to make those decisions themselves. In a three-hour webinar, state officials told clinicians that they will have to implement “crisis standards” for rationing care when there are more COVID-19 patients than ventilators, NBC News reported. “If you are above a certain age and we have a shortage of ventilators, you don’t get one,” Cassie Sauer, CEO of the Washington State Hospital Association said. “This has never happened in America at this level for this sustained time. … It is unprecedented and it should not happen.” Sauer said that more hospital beds and equipment, including ventilators and protective masks, could reduce the need to take such drastic measures. Some help will arrive soon as the U.S. Navy hospital ship Mercy, which has 80 intensive care beds, is headed for Seattle, where it will dock and assist with seriously ill patients. But health care workers in the state have had to take things into their own hands. The FBI just hit Americans with some extremely 

bad news about the coronavirus

And now the FBI just hit Americans with some extremely bad news about the coronavirus... States across the country are restricting business hours and movement as part of “social distancing” measures to halt the spread of the Chinese coronavirus. These draconian measures are not just affecting American employment and leisure activity. State lockdowns are now delaying firearm sales as the FBI announced that state agencies closing or limiting their hours would slow down National Instant Criminal Background Systems checks that are performed when Americans purchase a firearms from a Federal Firearms Licensed dealer. Should a state choose to limit their days of operation or close state offices, this could potentially impact the Brady Transfer Date (BTD) by changing the time in which an FFL can legally transfer a firearm in a delayed status. The NICS Section urges FFLs to be cognizant of the impact this may have to your day-to-day operations, and also to stress the importance of adhering to the BTD that is provided to you at the time a transaction is put into a Delay status. The Brady Act does not federally prohibit an FFL from transferring a firearm after the third business day expires, even if the NICS Section has been unable to provide a proceed response, pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 922(t)(1).  These checks are supposed to either approve, reject, or delay the purchase. If the purchase is delayed there is a three-day period to resolve the issue and this now threatened by state shutdowns over the coronavirus. This could end up costing American lives. The city of Philadelphia announced it would no longer arrest individuals for violent crimes such as burglary or car theft. Police departments in some cities are no longer protecting their citizens. Now the government is restricting their ability to defend themselves by exercising their second amendment rights.

Trump acknowledges coronavirus 

is hurting his family business

{ thehill.com } ~ President Trump acknowledged Saturday that the coronavirus pandemic was hurting his family business... “I wouldn’t say you’re thriving when you decide to close down your hotels and your businesses,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about reports his Trump Organization properties were being adversely affected by the virus. “I’m very unlevered in everything, so that’s good,” the president continued. “But is it hurting me? Yeah, it’s hurting me, and it’s hurting Hilton, and it’s hurting all of the great hotel chains all over the world.” The COVID-19 pandemic has sickened nearly 20,000 Americans as of Saturday and forced businesses across the country to close. Trump noted that some businesses,  such as Walmart, were doing well despite the outbreak but noted that those that are thriving are few in number. Asked if he or anyone in the administration had spoken to the Trump Organization about the potential impact of the coronavirus, Trump said he had spoken only to his sons but “not as it pertains to my business.” Trump passed control of the Trump Organization, which operates a number of buildings, golf clubs and hotels, just before he took office at the beginning of 2017. The Washington Post reported Friday that at least four Trump Organization properties had closed amid the coronavirus outbreak, and three hotels had laid off staff as a result of the pandemic...

Democrats in Washington are rallying their forces to tie up a massive government relief package to push their partisan priorities. That was the take on social media from hard-hitting conservative commentator Mark Levin on Sunday, when he published blistering Twitter posts attacking House Speaker liar-Nancy Pelosi and her party for derailing an aid bill in the Senate. “liar-Pelosi’s poisonous politics feeds the Wuhan virus. She’s exploiting this crisis to advance her radical agenda,” Levin wrote. “She must be exposed and condemned for the diabolical huckster that she is.” Levin’s post came after the California Democrat returned to Washington after a weeklong House recess to announce that the House would be working up its own aid bill. Senate Democrats, meanwhile, blocked a massive aid package from passage Sunday night. And given Democrats’ recent history — like the report that liar-Pelosi had tried to insert abortion funding into the first coronavirus stimulus bill — it’s a given that any deal cooked up by the Democrat-dominated House will push the kind of leftist agenda points that could not pass in normal legislation. Even the Democratic-leaning Politico hinted as much in a report Sunday — though it used the most benevolent terms. “It’s unclear what exactly will be in the final House Democratic package. The caucus held several hours of conference calls this week for members to promote their ideas, including a significant expansion of unemployment insurance, direct cash payments to Americans under a certain income threshold, funding for hospitals and medical supplies, and grants to keep small businesses from folding. COVID-19 Will Change Healthcare

Brian Mark Weber  When terms like “social distancing” and “self quarantine” are on the tip of every journalist’s tongue, the good news can often be hard to find.

And little did we know that an act passed in 1996 would haunt us in 2020. Back then, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was signed into law, ensuring that information shared between doctors and patients is private and secure. The HIPAA website states, “Prior to HIPAA, no generally accepted set of security standards or general requirements for protecting health information existed in the health care industry. At the same time, new technologies were evolving, and the health care industry began to move away from paper processes and rely more heavily on the use of electronic information systems.”

But the technology of 1996 is not that of today. Essentially, HIPAA prevented healthcare providers and individual doctors from taking advantage of emerging information technologies — and it required patients to be in the physical presence of their doctor in order to have important conversations about their health.

Thus, the Wuhan coronavirus has made the standard office visit not only a challenge for those suffering the symptoms but dangerous for everyone else.

As Tiana Lowe writes at The Washington Examiner, “For decades, HIPAA has strangled the healthcare system, preventing providers from communicating with patients and sharing health data with other experts” and “they are forced to use antiquated electronic medical record systems and to communicate with patients primarily in person.”

This week, all that changed.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump took the bold step of ordering the Department of Health and Human Services to waive potential HIPAA penalties, thereby clearing the way for telemedicine. Now, a patient with coronavirus symptoms can consult with a real doctor from home.

Two healthcare providers, Kaiser Permanente and One Medical, are already offering this service to their patients. “Kaiser and One Medical can do this because patients aren’t paying to see their preferred physician,” writes Lowe. “They’re paying to get immediate, efficient care. You may wait weeks to see your private practice physician, who is financially incapable of circumventing the HIPAA stipulations that render telemedicine so difficult.”

As the nation’s coronavirus response continues to evolve, President Trump is getting rid of the red tape. Just yesterday during the daily coronavirus task force briefing, he announced that he’s directed FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn to “eliminate outdated rules and bureaucracy” in order to “get the rapid deployment of safe, effective treatments” out to the public as soon as possible. As a result, Americans will soon be able to access Chloroquine to alleviate the symptoms of coronavirus.

Trump, in fact, has been battling the bureaucracy since he took office. In 2018, he signed right-to-try legislation that allows terminally ill patients to try promising drugs that haven’t yet received FDA approval. Taken together, these steps may set a precedent by making quality care more efficient, affordable, and accessible long after we’ve conquered coronavirus.

The coronavirus panic has pushed the stock market to the brink, forced universities to teach courses online, turned millions of Americans into telecommuters, and shuttered restaurants, malls, and transportation hubs. But the good news is out there, including that American healthcare has a brighter future.

If only it hadn’t taken a national emergency to make it so.
