 Strange Bedfellows Lead to the Iowa Caucus 

With the Iowa caucuses less than a week away, the Republican race is the strangest nomination process in memory. After the flame-out of both establishment favorites and conservatives with experience, the race is quickly coming down to Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, though Marco Rubio may still have an outside shot. How did we get here?

          Cruz is loathed by the GOP establishment as a "whack job" because of his unbending allegiance to conservative principles, and for calling out the GOP leadership and establishment for their failures to govern according to the promises on which they campaigned.

          Trump is the circus sideshow, a lifelong liberal Democrat with New York values, a reality TV star and casino mogul supposedly without a chance of winning the more conservative Southern states — an absolute must for any Republican. He's the narcissist who can't stand to be out of the limelight, and he'll insult anybody and everybody to get attention. He's proclaimed he won't participate in Thursday night's debate moderated by Fox News, all because he's seemingly afraid of Megyn Kelly, whom he's already grossly insulted. Instead, he claims, he'll host an event to raise money for veterans. We'll believe it when we don't seem him on stage, but has there ever been a politician with thinner skin?

          But a funny thing happened along the way. Cruz quietly built up an impressive campaign war chest that made him a force to be reckoned with, and his principled conservative record and message, plus his refusal to attack Trump, led to a steady rise in the polls. Trump has defied all political wisdom and held a perpetual lead in the polls based almost entirely on his unapologetically un-PC rhetoric and his brash (if inconsistent) populism on illegal immigration, combating Islamic terrorism, and the economy. Angry voters consider him the best vehicle to express their outrage.  -The Patriot Post

 Silver Linings — Challenger STS-51-L 

This day 30 years ago was a day so tragic for my friend June Scobee Rodgers and her children that I can't imagine the anguish they experienced. June, and the families of other crew members, watched as her husband's Challenger Space Shuttle disintegrated just after liftoff. At T+68, Commander Dick Scobee confirmed, "Roger, go at throttle up" — the last communication she, and the nation, heard from Challenger. That evening, President Ronald Reagan addressed the nation, saying, "The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of God.'"

          In the years that followed, June has turned that tragedy into a triumph, honoring the loss of her beloved husband and his crew with the establishment of the Challenger Centers for Space Science Education. There are now 40 Challenger STEM learning centers across the nation inspiring countless young people toward careers in the sciences. I know few people who embody June's level of character and integrity. You can read her story in a tribute, "A Silver Lining to Storms of Sorrow."  Trump, Fox and 'The Veterans' 

Donald Trump says he'll be a no-show for the GOP debate tonight in Iowa. He claims it's because he has "zero respect for Megyn Kelly," adding "I don't think she is very good at what she does. I think she is highly overrated." Recall if you will, that Kelly asked Trump at an earlier debate, "You've called women you don't like 'fat pigs, dogs and disgusting animals.' ... How will you answer the charge from Hilly Clinton that you are part of the war on women?" After the debate, Trump responded, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her — wherever."

          Actually, here's the real reason why Trump is declining the debate: First and foremost, it's a good strategic play. By not being present, he pits Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio against each other without getting caught in the crossfire. Second, just ahead of the Iowa caucus, he won't have to defend his typical elitist and derogatory references, in this case comments like, "How stupid are the people of Iowa?" He won't have to excuse his liberal "New York values," or his own assertions about how his "views are different than if I lived in Iowa." And third, he won't get called out on the fact that he disgracefully played the "9/11 Card" in the last debate, using the victims of that attack as political fodder to dodge questions about his New York values.

          "I like debating," Trump claims. "I just don't like being used." But Trump is a master user, and once again he is playing the now-familiar "Veterans Card," using veterans as political fodder to dodge this debate. Trump perfected that play when he threatened to skip the CNN debate unless Jeff Zucker, president of CNN, donated all the ad revenues to "the veterans." Of course, Trump showed up for the debate, and CNN didn't send a dime to any veterans support group. Trump merely invokes "the veterans" in a play to rally support from those of us who hold veterans in high regard. But as with the "9/11 Card" play in the last debate, this is nothing more than a crass political ploy.

          Regardless of whether Trump shows for the debate or not, the reality-TV billionaire will remain the focus of the media.

Here is the backstory. It seems that every week, more information comes to light about Clinton’s grave legal woes. Her worries are in two broad categories: One is her well-documented failure to safeguard state secrets and the other is her probable use of her position as secretary of state to advance financially her husband’s charitable foundation. The FBI is currently and aggressively investigating both. What I will describe below is in the state secrets category. {wnd.com} ~ In all candor, I feel as though it would be remiss for me not to share a certain discomfort at the deportment of some Republican and conservative likely voters as this campaign season has progressed... The world is currently facing the mobilization of a profoundly hostile, barbaric creed – Islam – which has the goal of nothing less than global domination. Currently, it is engaged in an invasion of Europe, which socialism has nearly destroyed already. America’s relations with her allies are at an all-time low, and telegraphed weakness has greatly emboldened her enemies. The allies Washington has not alienated outright have been subverted further into potentially disastrous policies, leading to a destabilization of Europe on several fronts. The Middle East and parts of Africa are hotbeds of continuous warfare and atrocity. Back at home, the White House, its surrogates, the press and even their ostensible detractors have minimized Islam’s threat; this has manifested in ongoing bizarre and surreal assertions that Muslims are no more a threat than Methodists to national security and domestic tranquility. We now live in a country wherein school sports teams get excluded from leagues and events because they are “too good”; grade school children are suspended from school from pointing their fingers and saying “bang”; homeowners can face prosecution for killing armed home invaders; and murder and mayhem on the part of Muslims is rationalized while Christian merchants are forced to cater to the whims of sexual deviants. Over 90 million Americans are out of work, yet the government and the press continue to report a 5 percent unemployment rate. {legalinsurrection.com} ~ A security breach discovered at a California-based software and hardware company has many officials worried, including U.S. Congressman Will Hurd of Texas... Rep. Hurd expressed his concerns over the breach in a Wall Street Journal op-ed explaining that foreign hackers may “have been reading the encrypted communications of U.S. government agencies for the past three years.” Juniper Networks provides network equipment and routers to the U.S. government that are believed to be used by the Defense Department, FBI, Justice Department, and Treasury Department. The company announced last month that an unauthorized backdoor had been been written into its ScreenOS software and that it may have occurred as early as 2013. Someone managed to gain access to Juniper’s systems and write “unauthorized code.” The added code or unauthorized backdoor “could allow a knowledgable attacker to gain administrative access.”

LaVoy Finicum, “Summarily Executed”

{joemiller.us} ~ KrisAnne Hall, the legal advisor for the Coalition of Western States, was interviewed today on The Joe Miller Show. Ms. Hall, who was just in Burns, Oregon this last week teaching several constitutional law courses, spoke with protesters present at the refuge... She also discussed what happened regarding LaVoy Finicum’s shooting with Ammon Bundy’s sister. Ms. Hall states that no shots were fired by any of the protesters, but that there were multiple shots fired by federal agents at the protesters’ car. She characterized the stop as an “ambush.” Additionally, Ms. Hall states that LaVoy Finicum was “summarily executed,” shot while he was on the ground with his hands in the air. She contends that because of the Patriot Act, the federal government will likely never release the video of the stop. Ms. Hall asks, “Does the federal government have the right to execute these people” without due process? Listen to the full interview here:

Donald Trump has shocked the established political class and its loyal journalistic following... Senators Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders are upsetting governing elites almost as much as Trump. The public says it is angry and isn’t going to take it anymore. Yet the prescription offered by these three candidates is very different. The Donald constantly trumpets that he is a deal maker. Cruz and Sanders are more interested in the substance of the deal and always ready to say no deal. There’s no doubt that politics involves compromise. Even such dominant figures as Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reagan had to accept less than what they wanted.

{eaglerising.com} ~ A city councilman in Crystal City, Texas was recently arrested attempting to smuggle three illegal immigrants into the United States!... Councilman Marco Rodriguez has apparently been engaging in a bit of side work when he was supposed to be acting in his city’s best interests. The arrest happened Saturday at a post office in Big Wells. The feds say that Rodriguez was pulled over by a Border Patrol agent. They chatted briefly before Rodriguez allegedly tried to run away. Eventually, Border Patrol caught up to him and the three undocumented immigrants he was with.

Trump made political shock waves on Wednesday by dropping out of the event to host a fundraiser for veterans at Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University at 7 p.m. EST. CNN, CBS and YouTube have all decided to broadcast the event. “And this is the bimbo that’s asking presidential questions? Criticizes Trump for objectifying women … Poses like this in GQ Magazine,” a tweet shared by Trump said Thursday. The image attached showed Kelly posing seductively in a tiny black dress. “You once told a contestant on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ it would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees. {libertyunyielding.com} ~ Citizens United, a conservative advocacy group, is seeking federal records on why the Department of Justice (DOJ) ignored a federal grand jury indictment of a major Democratic Party donor who ordered illegal medical procedures that killed five elderly patients, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned... A federal grand jury named Hansjörg Wyss, former CEO of Synthes, Inc., as “Person No. 7” in a 2009 indictment that stated he directed subordinates in executive management meetings to conduct illegal human drug trials using an untested but potentially lucrative medical compound for spines. Synthes and its subsidiary, Norian Corporation, inserted a new compound into unsuspecting patients even though the drug was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). At the time of the indictment, FDA identified three patients who had died — two more died in the years thereafter.

Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said that, among other things, the JCPOA has allowed Iran to grow its reserve of “nuclear material” from 550 to 770 tons. “Exploration, extraction, enrichment, research reactors, and R and D are the major components of the nuclear program; JCPOA did not completely stymied the program, and we have only been slower in terms of progress,” Mr. Salehi told a meeting of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations. “In other activities even we have accelerated the pace, including in the volume of nuclear material which was 550 ton before, now we have 770 tons of nuclear material; this is a fact known to IAEA. With heavy water, we secured the project along with R and D, extraction and exploration.”

{constitutionrising.com} ~ The math just doesn’t add up for the global warming alarmists at NOAA, the National Oceanographic  and Atmospheric Association, which has become quite politicized under the nObama regime... Their revisionist claims on the temperature of the planet are meeting with some new skepticism as well. As part of their press to have their wild claims of man-caused global warming accepted as factual science, the scheming alarmists often cited a statistic that 97% of the world’s top climate scientists support their fairy tale. Now a group of elite scientists and others are on the record disputing those claims, and in numbers that would also challenge those who throw out that 97% consensus figure. With the alarmists allowing for only three percent of the scientific community to be in opposition to their claims, the three hundred would conversely commit the global warming crowd to a minimum of 9,700 accredited experts in support of their claims, if every scientist in opposition signed the letter. Are they prepared with names and endorsements to substantiate those assertions?

This seems to be the consensus among anti-establishment Republicans. According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, Trump leads among anti-establishment primary voters with an actual majority of 51 percent. And a full 51 percent of Republicans think Trump is “the best choice to bring needed change to Washington, perhaps the single most crucial attribute to leaned Republicans.”

Trump makes this case, too. He’s said that he’s the establishment’s worst nightmare. He says he’s too rich too be bought, too independent to care about what his enemies say, too powerful to be stopped. He’ll stand up for the American people by standing against the powers-that-be.

Then he turns around and says he’ll make deals. “I think the establishment is warming up,” Trump said this week. “I want to be honest, I have received so many phone calls from people that you would call establishment, from people — generally speaking … conservatives, Republicans — that want to come onto our team. We are getting calls from everybody that it’s actually amazing. I’m actually surprised.”

Why? Because, says Trump, unlike his chief rival, Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, he’ll make deals. He’s a deal-maker! “Guys like Ted Cruz will never make a deal because he’s a strident guy,” Trump said. “That’s what the country’s about really, isn’t it?”

And Trump will make deals. He isn’t lying. He’s friendly with everybody on the Democratic side of the aisle. Here’s Trump on House Minority Leader Nancy Pulosi, D-Calif.: “I think I’m going to be able to get along with Pulosi — I’ve always had a good relationship with Nancy Pulosi.” Here’s Trump on Senate Minority Leader Harry dinky-Reid, D-Nev.: He “always treated me nicely. We need that in Washington.” Here’s Trump on Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., godfather of amnesty: “I think I’ll be able to get along well with Schumer, Chuck Schumer. I was always very good with Schumer. I was close to Schumer in many ways.”

For that matter, here’s Trump on Hilly Clinton circa 2012: “Hilly Clinton I think is a terrific woman.” Here’s Trump on President nObama circa 2009: “I think he’s doing a really good job. … He’s really a champion.”

It’s not that Trump represents the establishment. He’s still anti-establishment because he’s not taking cues from them. He’s running his own campaign, and he’s following his own advice. But just because you oppose the establishment doesn’t mean that you’re a conservative. Trump opposes the establishment because he thinks of himself as a political outsider. The base opposes the establishment because they don’t want Republicans in the establishment cutting bad deals with Democrats. Which means that Trump’s anti-establishment viewpoint doesn’t match up with that of the conservative base.

Trump may change Washington, D.C., but not in a way conservatives will like. He could be a Republican Barack nObama, but he won’t be a conservative one. And another egomaniac without Constitutional strictures is the last thing we need.
