 Strange Bedfellows Lead to the Iowa Caucus 
With the Iowa caucuses less than a week away, the Republican race is the strangest nomination process in memory. After the flame-out of both establishment favorites and conservatives with experience, the race is quickly coming down to Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, though Marco Rubio may still have an outside shot. How did we get here?
          Cruz is loathed by the GOP establishment as a "whack job" because of his unbending allegiance to conservative principles, and for calling out the GOP leadership and establishment for their failures to govern according to the promises on which they campaigned.
          Trump is the circus sideshow, a lifelong liberal Democrat with New York values, a reality TV star and casino mogul supposedly without a chance of winning the more conservative Southern states — an absolute must for any Republican. He's the narcissist who can't stand to be out of the limelight, and he'll insult anybody and everybody to get attention. He's proclaimed he won't participate in Thursday night's debate moderated by Fox News, all because he's seemingly afraid of Megyn Kelly, whom he's already grossly insulted. Instead, he claims, he'll host an event to raise money for veterans. We'll believe it when we don't seem him on stage, but has there ever been a politician with thinner skin?
          But a funny thing happened along the way. Cruz quietly built up an impressive campaign war chest that made him a force to be reckoned with, and his principled conservative record and message, plus his refusal to attack Trump, led to a steady rise in the polls. Trump has defied all political wisdom and held a perpetual lead in the polls based almost entirely on his unapologetically un-PC rhetoric and his brash (if inconsistent) populism on illegal immigration, combating Islamic terrorism, and the economy. Angry voters consider him the best vehicle to express their outrage.  -The Patriot Post

This day 30 years ago was a day so tragic for my friend June Scobee Rodgers and her children that I can't imagine the anguish they experienced. June, and the families of other crew members, watched as her husband's Challenger Space Shuttle disintegrated just after liftoff. At T+68, Commander Dick Scobee confirmed, "Roger, go at throttle up" — the last communication she, and the nation, heard from Challenger. That evening, President Ronald Reagan addressed the nation, saying, "The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of God.'"
          In the years that followed, June has turned that tragedy into a triumph, honoring the loss of her beloved husband and his crew with the establishment of the Challenger Centers for Space Science Education. There are now 40 Challenger STEM learning centers across the nation inspiring countless young people toward careers in the sciences.  Trump, Fox and 'The Veterans' 
Donald Trump says he'll be a no-show for the GOP debate tonight in Iowa. He claims it's because he has "zero respect for Megyn Kelly," adding "I don't think she is very good at what she does. I think she is highly overrated." Recall if you will, that Kelly asked Trump at an earlier debate, "You've called women you don't like 'fat pigs, dogs and disgusting animals.' ... How will you answer the charge from Hilly Clinton that you are part of the war on women?" After the debate, Trump responded, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her — wherever."
          Actually, here's the real reason why Trump is declining the debate: First and foremost, it's a good strategic play. By not being present, he pits Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio against each other without getting caught in the crossfire. Second, just ahead of the Iowa caucus, he won't have to defend his typical elitist and derogatory references, in this case comments like, "How stupid are the people of Iowa?" He won't have to excuse his liberal "New York values," or his own assertions about how his "views are different than if I lived in Iowa." And third, he won't get called out on the fact that he disgracefully played the "9/11 Card" in the last debate, using the victims of that attack as political fodder to dodge questions about his New York values.
          "I like debating," Trump claims. "I just don't like being used." But Trump is a master user, and once again he is playing the now-familiar "Veterans Card," using veterans as political fodder to dodge this debate. Trump perfected that play when he threatened to skip the CNN debate unless Jeff Zucker, president of CNN, donated all the ad revenues to "the veterans." Of course, Trump showed up for the debate, and CNN didn't send a dime to any veterans support group. Trump merely invokes "the veterans" in a play to rally support from those of us who hold veterans in high regard. But as with the "9/11 Card" play in the last debate, this is nothing more than a crass political ploy.
          Regardless of whether Trump shows for the debate or not, the reality-TV billionaire will remain the focus of the media.

This seems to be the consensus among anti-establishment Republicans. According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, Trump leads among anti-establishment primary voters with an actual majority of 51 percent. And a full 51 percent of Republicans think Trump is “the best choice to bring needed change to Washington, perhaps the single most crucial attribute to leaned Republicans.”

Trump makes this case, too. He’s said that he’s the establishment’s worst nightmare. He says he’s too rich too be bought, too independent to care about what his enemies say, too powerful to be stopped. He’ll stand up for the American people by standing against the powers-that-be.

Then he turns around and says he’ll make deals. “I think the establishment is warming up,” Trump said this week. “I want to be honest, I have received so many phone calls from people that you would call establishment, from people — generally speaking … conservatives, Republicans — that want to come onto our team. We are getting calls from everybody that it’s actually amazing. I’m actually surprised.”

Why? Because, says Trump, unlike his chief rival, Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, he’ll make deals. He’s a deal-maker! “Guys like Ted Cruz will never make a deal because he’s a strident guy,” Trump said. “That’s what the country’s about really, isn’t it?”

And Trump will make deals. He isn’t lying. He’s friendly with everybody on the Democratic side of the aisle. Here’s Trump on House Minority Leader Nancy Pulosi, D-Calif.: “I think I’m going to be able to get along with Pulosi — I’ve always had a good relationship with Nancy Pulosi.” Here’s Trump on Senate Minority Leader Harry dinky-Reid, D-Nev.: He “always treated me nicely. We need that in Washington.” Here’s Trump on Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., godfather of amnesty: “I think I’ll be able to get along well with Schumer, Chuck Schumer. I was always very good with Schumer. I was close to Schumer in many ways.”

For that matter, here’s Trump on Hilly Clinton circa 2012: “Hilly Clinton I think is a terrific woman.” Here’s Trump on President nObama circa 2009: “I think he’s doing a really good job. … He’s really a champion.”

It’s not that Trump represents the establishment. He’s still anti-establishment because he’s not taking cues from them. He’s running his own campaign, and he’s following his own advice. But just because you oppose the establishment doesn’t mean that you’re a conservative. Trump opposes the establishment because he thinks of himself as a political outsider. The base opposes the establishment because they don’t want Republicans in the establishment cutting bad deals with Democrats. Which means that Trump’s anti-establishment viewpoint doesn’t match up with that of the conservative base.

Trump may change Washington, D.C., but not in a way conservatives will like. He could be a Republican Barack nObama, but he won’t be a conservative one. And another egomaniac without Constitutional strictures is the last thing we need.
