washingtonexaminer.com } ~ With House committee passage of the Corporate Transparency Act, and the introduction of a Senate companion bill that enjoys bipartisan support... the momentum is now firmly behind an effort to finally close legal loopholes that allow criminals to hide behind anonymous shell companies. The solution presented in these bills is amazingly, shockingly simple: It requires the people registering businesses to identify themselves to the government. Any reasonable person would assume that that was already part of the process of registering a business. But it isn't. Instead, the government has for many years outsourced the work of identifying who owns U.S.-based corporations to banks, through a complicated patchwork of invasive and expensive "know your customer" regulations. This ramshackle arrangement results in a process that is both invasive and ineffective at the same time. It also creates a financial incentive to severely restrict access to capital, decreasing economic mobility. The primary beneficiaries of the defective status quo are those who rely on its design to cloak their activities from the government. That includes, in the most serious cases, terrorists and drug lords. But it also facilitates money laundering, fraud, tax evasion, and other financial crimes. "The FBI has countless investigations, spanning criminal and national security threats, in which illicit actors, operating both domestically and internationally, use shell and front companies to conceal their nefarious activities and true identities," Steven D'Antuono, a senior FBI official, recently testified at a congressional hearing. "The strategic use of these entities makes investigations exponentially more difficult and laborious."...

Congress Refusing to Addrdess Border Disaster

{wnd.com} ~ James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, the James Dobson Family Institute and FamilyTalk radio, says the catastrophe on the nation’s southern border could be fixed... But there just aren’t enough people who are willing to solve the problem, he said in his July newsletter, especially in Congress “I have been under the impression that these would-be immigrants try to cross the Rio Grande River and outrun or evade the agents. That is not true of most. They come in large groups, from 100 to 400 people at a time. As I write this letter, a record 1,200 people arrived together at El Paso. The refugees quickly give themselves up to agents. That is why they have made this journey,” he said. He continued: “They know they will be fed, medicated, and treated humanely, even if they are in holding areas while they are in our custody. Then they will be released on American soil. This is the system set up by a liberal Congress and judges. It is a well-known fact that President scumbag/liar-Obama’s administration established many of these unworkable policies, and Congress is steadfastly unwilling to change them. “Every effort at reform has been overridden or ignored. It is set in stone. Democrats want massive numbers of immigrants who will someday become voters. Some Republicans support the policies because they want cheap labor for agricultural purposes. “The border could be fixed, but there are very few in authority who seem to care,” he said. The problem has been aggravated by the unwillingness of Democrats in Congress to negotiate with President Trump, combined with magnet policies such as free education and health care. Dobson was invited by White House staff to visit the border at McAllen, Texas, where “federal agents are struggling to deal with a massive influx of poor and destitute human beings. They come in never-ending waves. Please believe me when I tell you that the media and leftist politicians have not been truthful about what is going on there. It is a human tragedy.”...  https://www.wnd.com/2019/06/james-dobson-congress-refusing-to-address-border-disaster/

thehill.com } ~ The Senate late Thursday night approved a Trump  Interior Department nominee that has proven popular with Democrats and Republicans... Rob Wallace is the first assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks since 2011, a position that oversees both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service. Wallace stood out in his confirmation process after a long line of controversial picks to a department that has faced numerous ethics controversies since President Trump took office. “Rob has the right experience and real commitment to serve in this important role,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said of the Wyoming native. “He will do an outstanding job. He has worked to conserve wildlife and protect our national parks in both Wyoming and Washington.” Wallace currently works as president of the Upper Green River Conservancy and as a partner at the investment firm i2Capital. Some environmental groups raised questions about Wallace’s nearly two decades as a lobbyist for General Electric Energy and income from stock in the oil industry, but many conservation groups offered letters in support of his nomination. The Senate also confirmed Aimee Jorjani to a post on the the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Like Wallace, Jorjani received words of praise from Democrats on the Environment and Public Works Committee. Her husband, Daniel Jorjani, has also been nominated to a position at Interior reviewed by that committee, but he does not enjoy bipartisan support. Daniel Jorjani, currently the top lawyer for Interior, has been nominated to fill the vacant role as solicitor for the department. But he has been criticized by Democrats for his role in Interior’s controversial public records review process and responses to questions about it they said lacked candor. “The solicitor must uphold the law above all else about, above party politics and ideology. That was not the sense I got” about Jorjani, said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), the committee’s ranking Democrat...  https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/450928-senate-confirms-one-trump-interior-pick-but-vote-on-controversial

americanthinker.com } ~ My parents immigrated to an America whose economy boomed, then busted in 1929. Pop worked in the docks of New York City as a stevedore before the big crash... Mom was as passionate about raising a good family, regardless of difficulties, as she was about everything else. Nothing small, here – the scale was set high. Anything worth doing was carried out with a generous and loving heart. Our anchor was God and friends – not politicians and banks. It was a rough ride that made life all the more valuable for countering the many obstructions, day-to-day and hand-to-hand. Our family was not unique. My parents were typical of the people who left their impoverished burgs and towns in Europe to strike new roots in American soil. As with the first Europeans who settled here and launched a new nation, the vast majority of subsequent settlers were God-and-family-oriented, strong in body and spirit, and fearless. The early 20th Century saw America swirl into a storm of productivity, with creative advances in many fields. Breathless innovations in technology, industry, transportation, communications, and the arts remade the landscape and transformed the home almost overnight from “primitive” to “modern.” The fantastic New York World’s Fair of 1939 enchanted me as a child and planted an unforgettable memory of progress with beauty. Growing up in the dizzying array of film masterpieces during cinema’s golden years – the 1940 Fantasia still makes people gasp – spoiled me for life regarding excellence in screen entertainment. Soon color became the norm and black-and-white the option. Then television escaped science fiction and entered the living room to deliver live performances of stunning quality. I saw black-and-white TV turn to color and recorded music evolve from 78 rpm records to LPs, then to tape, as my ears witnessed the shift from “rich, warm sound” to exciting audio fidelity. All this with no computers, no satellites, no digital wizardry. At mid-century, the drive and originality that delivered a vigorous and vibrant America to the world were still at play. Excellence was taken for granted in the performing arts. Sports and education reached incredible levels of achievement with a small fraction of today’s funding in equivalent dollars. Over 90% of students graduated from my high school Bushwick, in Brooklyn, with far tougher standards than today’s...

Tolerance Museums: A Failing Franchise?

{americanthinker.com} ~The monumental $250-million building for the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem (MOTJ) is scheduled to open sometime in 2020. Spread out over 180,000 square feet, MOTJ will house two permanent exhibition spaces, a conference center, a theater, an educational facility, a restaurant and a book and gift shop... This latest and greatest tolerance museum will focus on global antisemitism, extremism, hate, human dignity and responsibility. MOTJ’s goal, to “promote unity and respect among Jews and people of all faiths,” is noble. But how effective will it be in combating a new strain of anti-Semitism that’s cloaked in opposition to Zionism and criticism of Israeli government policies? The desire to ensure that nothing like the Holocaust ever occurs again anywhere hasn’t beaten back the rising tide of anti-Semitism in  Europe and the United States. Another museum of tolerance will do little more than preach sweet-sounding homilies on morality, pluralism, broad-mindedness and tolerance to people who already embrace such values. The Association of Holocaust Organizations is comprised of almost 300 institutional members around the world, each at least partly devoted to commemoration. How many of these organizations that are dedicated to the advancement of Holocaust education, remembrance and research have transformed a Jihadi fighter into a rational humanist? What’s their success rate in reaching out to and re-educating members of the Ku Klux Klan? Have you ever read a story about a man planning to open fire on a synagogue full of worshippers who had a change of heart after walking into the local tolerance museum? The MOTJ will fail in its mission because its educational and thematic prototype, the Museum of Tolerance Los Angeles, has failed. Holocaust education in the United States doesn’t effectively combat ignorance about anti-Semitism. Two-thirds of American millennials surveyed in a recent poll don’t know what Auschwitz is, according to a study released on Holocaust Remembrance Day. This poll also found that knowledge about the genocide that killed 6 million Jews during World War II isn’t robust among American adults in general, with 22% of millennials saying they haven’t heard of the Holocaust or aren’t sure whether they’ve heard of it. Tolerance museums are losing the good fight because they’ve turned the murder of a distinct religious, ethnic and national group into a broadside against all forms of racism and prejudice. Anti-Semitism as a uniquely malevolent force has been glossed over in the service of a wider, more fashionable, social justice agenda. ‘Never Again’ has been franchised and become a global brand...

Michael Swartz:  With the amount of information the U.S. Census gathers every decade, it seems logical that one of the questions asked would be simply, “Are you a citizen of the United States?” Yet the very idea of asking this simple “yes” or “no” question outraged the Left — which is in a headlong rush to offer free stuff to anyone who arrives. And leftists found a judge and a Supreme Court willing to stop the Trump administration from adding this longstanding question back into the 2020 census.

While conventional wisdom held that SCOTUS would grant the administration’s request, the Left’s Hail Mary pass was the unearthing of an unreleased report penned by a now-deceased GOP consultant claiming the citizenship question could assist Republican candidates. Leftists struck pay dirt when a Barack scumbag/liar-nObama-appointed judge deemed that what’s become known as the Hofeller files — discovered and released by the estranged daughter of the late consultant Thomas Hofeller, who died last year — “raises a substantial issue” regarding the Trump administration’s claim that the question would assist in enforcing the Voting Rights Act. Opponents of the question contend that adding it would reduce responses from minorities despite the fact that citizens are required by law to do so.

As speculated here earlier this month, the ever-capricious Chief Justice John Roberts was the one handed Democrats a victory with another of his weirdly contorted decisions. He aided the Left in at least temporarily blocking the question, which Roberts said was valid but that the Trump administration “did not provide adequate reasoning” for its inclusion.

As The Wall Street Journal explains, “The question in Department of Commerce v. New York was whether Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross acted within his purview in reinstating a citizenship question on the 2020 census. That’s not the question the Court ended up deciding. Instead, the Chief held that although Mr. Ross acted lawfully, his motives appear to have been less than pure.”

In other words, Roberts’s decision had to do with process and motives, not the Constitution.

The Court’s 5-4 decision thus puts the Trump administration in a box: Either conduct the 2020 census without a citizenship question — which will likely pad the population counts (and the congressional representation) of Democrat-controlled districts — or delay the census until the administration can make the correct case for its inclusion.

President Donald Trump has chosen to delay the census. “Seems totally ridiculous that our government, and indeed Country, cannot ask a basic question of Citizenship in a very expensive, detailed and important Census, in this case for 2020,” Trump tweeted. “I have asked the lawyers if they can delay the Census, no matter how long, until the United States Supreme Court is given additional information from which it can make a final and decisive decision on this very critical matter. Can anyone really believe that as a great Country, we are not able the ask whether or not someone is a Citizen. Only in America!”

While the Census has been conducted on April 1 since the 1930 counting, historically it’s been conducted as early as January 1 and as late as the first Monday in August, which was its original time frame. Going back to that initial date would give the courts four more months to figure out the legality. Moreover, states don’t receive the data for redistricting until several months afterward — in this case, early 2021. (The 2010 Tea Party wave election was such a disaster for Democrats at the state level because in several states they had to cede control of post-census redistricting to the Republicans.)

But what if the question were included anyway? Again, even Roberts conceded the question was a valid one, writing “neither respondents nor my colleagues have been able to identify any relevant, judicially manageable limits on the Secretary’s decision to put a core demographic question back on the census.”

Nor is politicizing the census anything new. Readers may recall the Supreme Court denied a scumbag/liar-Clinton administration bid to conduct the 2000 census with statistical sampling to correct a perceived undercount of minorities and noncitizens. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the Left doesn’t like the idea of simply counting every citizen.

That’s because leftists aim to rig the electoral system. And, for now at least, John Roberts helped them do it.  ~The Patriot Post
