President Trump resisted setting up a war room to fight allegations that he withheld aid from Ukraine to pressure Kyiv to find dirt on a political rival. And Republican sources said they frequently found themselves off balance, playing defense when hearings were being conducted behind closed doors. That changed this week with new hires bolstering the White House communications operation and a shift to public hearings that allowed administration aides to better prepare, said a source involved in 2020 battleground states. “I must have received 20 emails during the last testimony in terms of counterpoints, comparing it with the written testimony, the behind closed doors testimony, backgrounders on what these people know, what they don’t know,” said the source. “It has made our lives a lot easier in terms of knowing what the pushback is and what the messaging is.” The result was a nonstop stream of analysis, fact-checking, and real-time rebuttal on social media as Marie Yovanovitch, removed from her post as ambassador to Ukraine, testified before the House Intelligence Committee. Allies, surrogates, and campaign groups unified around message blasts that pointed out that none of the witnesses so far had been on the president’s phone calls and that Ukraine had not even been aware that its aid was frozen at the time of the supposed quid pro quo. In one message, seen by the Washington Examiner, supporters were sent a recap of questions and answers, pointing out that “Yovanovitch confirmed that she had no first-hand knowledge of President Trump’s July 25 phone call with Zelensky or other decisions relating to Ukraine.” It also quoted an exchange that made its way to social media. Any chance that Republicans would let Democrats off the hook with a quick impeachment trial, or even an immediate motion to dismiss the partisan articles of impeachment the Democrats intend to pass, evaporated on Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made it clear the Senate will have trial and it should be expected to last five or six weeks., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that the Senate cannot dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, meaning there will be a trial. “I don’t think there’s any question that we have to take up the matter. The rules of impeachment are very clear, we’ll have to have a trial. My own view is that we should give people the opportunity to put the case on,” McConnell told reporters after being asked about dismissing the articles of impeachment. Senate Republicans do not appear to be concerned about House Democrats’ ongoing efforts to impeach Trump, with many saying even if the House were to move forward with impeachment, that there is no way the Senate would vote to impeach the president. This decision throws the Democrat presidential primary into chaos. Six Democrat Senators are running for President – including frontrunners Elizabeth dinky/liar-Warren and commie-Bernie Sanders – and the impeachment trial will sideline them from campaigning during January and early February. That is a disaster because the Iowa caucuses are scheduled for February 3 and the New Hampshire primary for February 11. That would take dinky/liar-Warren and commie-Sanders – as well as scumbag-Corey Booker, lowlife-Kamala Harris, Michael Bennett and Amy Klobuchar – off the campaign trail. A Senate trial stretching into February would effectively end the candidacies of scumbag-Booker, Bennett, Klobuchar, and lowlife-Harris as they haven’t raised much money and are counting on in-person retail politics to deliver the strong showings in Iowa and/or New Hampshire their campaigns will need to survive.

Ostensibly, China is grooming Ukraine to become a key node in Beijing’s One Belt, One Road trade route across Asia to Europe. China also has its eyes on Ukraine’s military hardware and agricultural exports. Ukraine has replaced the U.S. as China’s top supplier of corn. And China is now the top purchaser of Ukrainian military arms, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Institute, a research body that maintains a yearly assessment of the global military arms industry. “China is really interested in our military technologies, and for Ukraine it’s a matter of economic growth,” Oleksiy Goncharenko, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, said in an interview with The Daily Signal. Ukraine will not likely return to Russia’s fold anytime soon. After five and a half years of war in which more than 13,000 Ukrainians have died, there’s simply too much bad blood. This likely will taint relations between the two erstwhile Soviet allies for decades to come. But that Russo-Ukrainian divorce doesn’t necessarily mean that Ukraine is on an irreversible, pro-Western trajectory, some experts say. On the Senate side, it was business as usual. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, opened a hearing with a wry smile: “I’m not sure why you’re not over on the House side,” he told the audience. The room was not full. “Must have been paid staff.” When Johnson, back in July, gaveled in a hearing in this series, “Unprecedented Migration at the U.S. Southern Border,” the subject was a nationally galvanizing issue. The hearing room was full, cameras were rolling, and the session was briefly interrupted by protesters. For now, the nation has moved on, and Johnson seemed more relaxed. In recent months, or possibly years, the Senate, under a stubborn Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been relegated mainly to confirming nominations for various government posts, approving appropriations bills, and quietly turning the judicial branch into a redoubt for the radical fringe of the legal world. At the beginning of Donald Trump’s administration, many vowed to keep close tabs on the workings of the government; fighting “normalization” was a refrain in 2017. But here we are. The shift in attention allowed Johnson to put forward, without any pushback, a vision of the manufactured humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border as, instead, a bureaucratic nightmare being valiantly managed by the “compassionate” people at the Department of Homeland Security. This particular session was meant to be a “year in review.” Four witnesses were on the panel, three of whom were Trump-appointed, unconfirmed immigration officials. There was a lot to ask about. Gantz met with with President Reuven Rivlin for an hour and a half Saturday night. They discussed his coalition-building efforts ahead of his Wednesday night deadline to form a government before his mandate ends and compromises that could still enable a deal with Likud. Netanyahu told Likud ministers and MKs in an “emergency conversation” on Saturday that he knew for a fact that Blue and White intends to form a minority government backed by the Joint List. He will convene the Likud faction and the right-wing political bloc on Sunday. “We are standing before an emergency situation that we have never had before in the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said in the conference call. “Going to a third election would be a disaster, but forming a government that is dependent on the Arab parties would be a worse disaster. This would be a historic danger for Israeli security.” Netanyahu accused the Arab MKs “supporters of Islamic Jihad and Hamas.” He said he was sure that Yisrael Beytenu would be part of such a government. Gantz responded in a Facebook post that Netanyahu losing power was not an emergency. "An emergency is hundreds of missiles falling on the State of Israel," Gantz wrote. "Netanyahu, internalize it that I will do everything to prevent you from dragging Israel to a third election." Gantz said Likud should come to coalition talks without its right-wing bloc and "without immunity, tricks and shtick," adding "what worked for you for 10 years will no longer work now." Sources close to Gantz confirmed that forming an "acting government" with Yisrael Beytenu, Labor-Gesher and Yisrael Beytenu, backed from outside by the Joint List could be a temporary step en route to a larger coalition, but they hinted that the idea remains political spin aimed at forcing Likud to give up its right-wing bloc."...
