A Special Thanksgiving Message

Today we will gather together with our friends and families to commemorate Thanksgiving. However, do we know why we are doing so?

As I have said, before, but bears repeating, never before has the need been greater to know why we believe what we believe and to understand why we do the things we have always done.

Some of us will use this holiday to give our thanks to God, our Creator, and His Son Jesus Christ for their providence, provision and protection in our lives. And, some of us will spend the day like any other holiday where we have the day off from work to eat, drink, and be merry.

However, do you know that this year, in a once-in-a lifetime event, the first day of Hanukkah is occurring on Thanksgiving this year?   The word “Hanukkah” in Hebrew means “dedication.”

The holiday of Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem after it was defiled when a small army of devout Jews known as the Maccabees rebelled against their Greek-Syrian rulers, eventually overcoming them.

Therefore, let’s use this Thanksgiving to re-dedicate our “temple” to God, our Creator, and His Son, Jesus Christ as we truly approach His throne of grace and mercy with sincere thanksgiving in our hearts for His providence, provision and protection in our lives.

And, like the late John F. Kennedy once proclaimed in his Inaugural Address, on January 20, 1961, “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.”

I proclaim, on this Thanksgiving Day and Hanukkah 2013, my fellow Americans, “Ask not what God can do for you, rather ask God what you can do for Him to truly honor Him and bless Him as we use our bodies (temples) as a living sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving by  worshipping Him in Spirit and in Truth!”

Moreover, many people will profess that America was founded on Judeo-Christian values, but do not know why. In addition, many will claim America was not established specifically for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The truth of the matter is that America was birthed as a result of one of the promises God made to Abraham when He cut covenant with him. To learn more about why God raised up America in the first place and how this nation was indeed founded on Judeo-Christian values based on the gospel of Jesus Christ, please access the following link below to read my writing titled “America Bless God!” which is located under the 2013 Prophetic Word.

In addition, the early pilgrims who came to America established a covenant with God, our Creator, and His Son, Jesus Christ called the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620 which serves as a written testimony to us all as they declared…

“In the name of God, Amen. We whose names are underwritten…having undertaken, for the glorie of God, and advancement of the Christian faith…a voyage to plant the first colony…”

Moreover, this Thanksgiving Day let’s learn why this holiday was founded in the first place. Therefore, please read this excellent article titled “Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?” written by my good friend and sister in Christ, Brenda MacMenamin. She has written her perspective of why we celebrate Thanksgiving based on the signer of the Mayflower Compact, and a founder and long-term governor of Plymouth colony—William Bradford.

And, last, but certainly not least, this Thanksgiving Day 2013 let’s hear the words of George Washington's Proclamation of 1789 which says it all…

“WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

“Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

“And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.”

“Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.”
~  George Kerry Washington

Until we speak again, Happy Thanksgiving and may the Lord bless you and protect you and yours.  May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you peace.

Together  we CAN make a difference for His Kingdom   and  America!
Thanks and God Bless!
