Michigan Lt. Gov. Garland Gilchrist (D) told a predominantly black church Sunday that Republicans are pushing election integrity reforms because they really do not want black people to vote.

Republicans in Michigan recently proposed the idea of a petition drive to force a legislature to vote on a series of election reforms designed to increase ballot security. If a sufficient number of signatures are obtained, a legislative vote would be held, and if the measure passes, it becomes law without the governor’s signature.

Gilchrist claimed that he asked by an attendee at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Westland what the state could do “to not become another Georgia,” an apparent reference to election reforms recently enacted there.

It’s really disgusting,” he said, “and to me, what it says is 1. Republicans are scared of you voting. Period. Republicans are scared of people who look like us voting,” he told Sunday morning congregants.

“And that is happening at a level that it hasn’t happened in a really ever, actually,” Gilchrist declared, “in this past presidential election and they’re so scared they decided, you know, you don’t y’all to vote any more and so we want to make it more difficult for people who look like you to do so.”

Gilchrist told church goers if the legislatures passes election reform bills, “We will not let it come into law.”

He said he expects Republicans to play “games” to “try to get around that power that the people of Michigan gave us and we’re prepared to respond to that.”

The Michigan Constitution affords citizens “the power to propose laws” by initiative:

Any law proposed by initiative petition shall be either enacted or rejected by the legislature without change or amendment within 40 session days from the time such petition is received by the legislature. If any law proposed by such petition shall be enacted by the legislature it shall be subject to referendum, as hereinafter provided.

If the law so proposed is not enacted by the legislature within the 40 days, the state officer authorized by law shall submit such proposed law to the people for approval or rejection at the next general election. The legislature may reject any measure so proposed by initiative petition and propose a different measure upon the same subject by a yea and nay vote upon separate roll calls, and in such event both measures shall be submitted by such state officer to the electors for approval or rejection at the next general election.

The measure is not subject to a governor’s approval or veto.

The Michigan Republican Party recently said it may pursue a petition initiative to enact election integrity reforms.

“If that legislation is not passed by our Legislature, which I am sure it will be, but if it’s not signed by the governor, then we have other plans to make sure that it becomes law before 2022,” party chairman Ron Weiser told a local Republican group.

“That plan includes taking that legislation and getting the signatures necessary for a legislative initiative so it can become law without Gretchen Whitmer’s signature.”

  • Some people can't see the truth. Some people prefer to believe a lie.  Some people will be led, like sheep to the slaughter.  Democrats know this. That is why the continue to lie to people.  If one man's vote is compromised by illegal votes, no man's vote is safe and elections are meaningless.  There is a difference between Fair and open elections and a free for all.  The Democrats would turn the elections into a free for all brawl, where the winner is the one who can offer the most freebies to the most people, whither they are American citizens or not.

    • that is the fact and it's not going to get better it's getting worse as the day goes by.

  • He can say anything he wants in his church as long the church has no objection. The church is protected by the first amendment and, by the way, there is no such thing in the constitution or the 1st amendment that declares 'the separation of church and state'. In fact it is the church that is protected from the state, not the other way around. The state cannot impose any regulation on a church although of course it can indict a church member who commits an actual crime.

  • How stupid can he be he doesn't want to accept black were doing better with President Trump then with any other President and this included Obama.

  • He is lying to his teeth I am a black man and this is my first time voting for a president and I did vote.

    • Of course he is lying , what can you expect from a demorat.

  • I am a White Republican and I know for a fact that all Black people are not as ignorant as this misinformed soul. There are many Blacks who, if they do not have something to complain about and push their racist thoughts on others, Republicans, Whites keeping them down, potholes in the street or whatever, they are not happy, just like Communist Democrats. It is time for everybody to grow up, pull together as “Americans”, you know; “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one). Whites have died for Blacks, and Blacks have died for Whites in this country and Jesus Christ died for all of us, so grow up and get over your petty bull-crap. Try reading the Bible and search out your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!!

  • What a pile of BS...in reality..demoncrap/nazis don't think black people are intelligent enough to have a computer ar get an ID even though one has to have an ID for EVERYTHING!!! Sad part is  it is black folks keeping black folks ON the plantation. Use your minds like Candace Owens and Larry Elder....wake up the fools!!

  • The people need to take the time to read Georgia's law and find out exactly what it covers.  If they don't read it then they are the damn problem.  Especially blacks.  If blacks don't get their way, they scream and cry.  They have taken the position that everything should be done to elevate the black person. That is just not the way it is.  They, blacks, need to understand that the democrats have sold them down the river again.  Do we need another Emancipation Proclamation to set them free, again.   The Ga. Law gives more time to vote, more ways to vote, more places to drop off ballots.  If people could give out water and food, the black people would be the first to holler fraud.  Most states have the same rule.  Georgia's new law is up there with the best in the country.  Wish SC would pass the same law.  We need it.

    • Nothing wrong with SC voting laws. Lived there over twenty years. Had the privilege of being a Poll Manager. I witness a district turn, simply because people challenged illegal votes. SC got it right.
