It was a dismal epoch in Delano, CA. The goal of the infamous Delano Grape Boycott was to force unionization of the farm workers to improve their pay and working conditions while subjugating their employers.
The majority of the workers were Americans of Mexican descent, plus documented immigrants and illegals. They have a certain love of the soil and a sense of true beauty and artistry that benefited California agriculture for generations. They could draw the best out of a grape vine or a fruit tree or make a broken down tractor hum.
They are also Roman Catholic from the time Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 Mexico and freed them from the despotism of Aztec rulers. As many as 300,000 victims were sacrificed every year to Aztec gods until Our Lady fulfilled an ancient Aztec prophecy on the Hill of Tepeyac.
Working conditions and treatment of employees varied with the nature and character of the farm owners, but they largely cared for their employees as much as any other employer. Sanitary conditions and other aspects of toiling in the hot sun have been vastly improved. Many migrate north following the harvests each year, often making their lives difficult save for growers’ labor camps. Many of the growers are also Roman Catholic. Their Church leaders stood against them, adding to the chaos caused by well-trained and funded leftist community organizers.
The United Farm Workers was formed around Fred Ross’ Communist tactics taught to Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta when in New Mexico. Seeking union organization of the workers, the UFW was quickly embraced by Democrat politicians and church leaders of several denominations. They came by the busload from UFW headquarters, they marched, they threatened, they destroyed and they carried banners of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Che Guevara.

Josephine from Earlimart, California, just north of Delano organized a group of farm working mothers she called “Mothers Against Chavez.” Today I call them “The Hispanic Tea Party.” As meetings were held in churches with special services and processions for the fledgling UFW, the Mothers tried to participate and express their feelings about the tactics of the UFW organizers. They were rebuffed and not even allowed in church halls. After all, the Kennedy’s and noted church leaders were on the side of the UFW. Leftist defined Social Justice, you know.
Chavez and Huerta were showered with accolades so numerous it boggles the mind… even to today where the Obama Administration is being lobbied by the UFW to posthumously present the late Fred Ross with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. http://action.ufw.org/page/s/fredross
Mothers Against Chavez drew some financial support from a man who flew in on his Learjet, according to her son Tony, who was 12 at the time and carrying a sign in the photo. A short time later, his jet crashed and killed all aboard.
History has a strange way of working things out. Josephine’s “Hispanic Tea Party” – Mothers Against Chavez, losing its benefactor in a plane crash never succeeded in stopping the UFW as it grew to around 350,000 members to the joy of leftists and Democrats all the way to Washington, DC with a lot of taxpayer dollars. Almost the same number of victims the Aztecs sacrificed every year to assure their food supply.
The UFW has failed to win repeated elections at farms and food processing plants whose workers were well treated. UFW is now down to less than 5,000 members – a drop of over 98%. Dolores Huerta still runs things. She still receives accolades for service to humanity through her failed union - even named to the list of “Top 100 Women of the 20th Century.”
You won’t find a word about Josephine Gabaldon, the God-fearing Founder of the “Hispanic Tea Party” – Mothers Against Chavez. Maybe some day when we are free again under our Constitution they’ll name a school or a boulevard for her.
Her son Tony, who marched with her and saw the injustices of the left is today a successful communications specialist, father of 4, including a little girl he and his now late wife adopted 4 years ago. Tony is a staunch Republican who cajoles his relatives and co-workers to wake up.
I know – Tony is my friend and his little girl is my Goddaughter. She loves having tea parties with Nana and our dog Emily. Emily enjoys the special treatment and dutifully drinks her cup of tea. And life goes on.

Marshall - I do know Muslims, who can pass for Hispanics do come across the border regularly. I was on I-5 one day in 2004 when I got a call on my cell. The call came from a Delano, CA land line to my 213 prefix in the same 661 Area Code. The young man didn't know to dial "1" for long distance from a land line so he got me instead of his contct in Los Angeles. "Mohammed is coming across the border today" said he. He insisted I was his contact so I humored him. Then I called 911 and got hooked up the CHP Security and reported the Delano number and my number. The guy called back again and we tried to extract more information from him, but he finally realized he screwed up.
Since I have a lot of Hispanic contact, my solution to the immigration problem is to build a campaign around Our Lady of Guadalupe who freed their forbears from the human sacrifice of the Aztecs, coupled with a "you must learn to love and appreciate this beautiful country and become part of it." All they get is victimhood and freebies. What do we expect?
Get rid of the crooks and drug dealers and deal with this beautiful people from the heart.
It won't happen as long as the "progressives" and their MB partners in crime have the levers of government.
What is the break down of illegal immigrants! Everyone talks like it is 95% Hispanic, I would guess it is less than 40% Hispanic and we should be taking about who is here if our government knows anything. The government is talking about all these programs and missing the important items and does not even have the approximate data of who is here, where did they come from, how did they get here, why are they here, what per cent are working, how many have a criminal record and many other parts of the equation that must be known before action can be designed. The Federal Government including Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Chucky Schummer, Marco Rubio need to get busy gathering enough facts to make informed decisions on what needs to be done to protect the United States from Weapons of Mass destruction being smuggled across the border in a bale of Marajuana. We are at risk with the high number of Fanatic Muslims that want to kill most of us that are coming into the country after their training in Venezuala. We know 40% are coming into the country on Visas and then not leaving and our government does not know where they are and don't seem to care. We do need some of the people but we should make the decisions based on the need and value of each person. That is how they earn their spot in line. Some have done that by serving in the United States Military, should those that came here illegally be able to be citizens before any immigrant that is serving in the Military hoping to become a citizen? The other big question I always question is why does the government and especially the Democrat President not want to secure our borders from drug smugglers? I always suspect those smugglers that are making millions also have many ways to provide big campaign donations???? Is there any reason we should trust our Government leaders anymore???

Linda GrayWolf, it's true God will win, but keep in mind His word in Revelations. There'll come a pretty rough time where tyranny will flourish over the entire world. It's called the Tribulation. Now I believe Christians will be raptured before it but I also believe many countries will see hard times before it. Also consider the Christians who were persecuted by Nero. Did they win? YES, by their testimony to the power of God to safekeep their witness to the world.
Also, please remember God often gives us what we ask for as did Israel when it demanded a king, much to its regret. Much of the USA is demanding we become the USSA. It may well become our greatest regret unless patriots and Christians actively oppose such a transformation effectively.

Gerald V. Todd, thanks for the effort. I don't want to be too cynical but having my suspicions about Pres. Clinton's Secretary of Commerce Brown's death in an Air Force jet on the type of missions I used to fly I had to ask the question.
