A Speech Every American High School Principal Should Give....

By Dennis Prager.

To the students and faculty of our high school:

I am your new principal, and honored to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people.

I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country.

First, this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships. The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American.

This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans. If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity, race and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America , one of its three central values -- e pluribus Unum, "from many, one." And this school will be guided by America 's values. This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness.

Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood, ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interested in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you.

Second, I am uninterested in whether English is your native language.  My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America 's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English --but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.

Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward.  Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.

Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.

Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.

Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately lucky -- to be alive and to be an American.

Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you.

  • "As well, there should be a quantitative tool to measure the individual teachers performance."

Been there done that.  The teachers couldn't pass the test so the standard was lowered.

  • Not only do we have to give Schools back to the States, the States need to allow the respective communities to handle their own unique issues. Parents must be held accountable for their children and must, to some reasonable degree, participate in the educational process and social integration of their children.

We also need to abolish tenure, political contributions, forced unionism and the special interest groups so prevalent in the American Public School Systems (Private too by the way).  As well, there should be a quantitative tool to measure the individual teachers performance as well as the supporting faculty.

We Americans have gotten lax in paying attention to what is going on right under our noses (because it could NEVER happen here in these Great United States), but we MUST step in and manage this crisis NOW.

  • that is what this Country needed long time ago.
  • If we could get defund and shut down the Dept. of Education and return education to the individual states, most of what is in Dennis Prager's letter could and would be accomplished.  It's past time for us to take back our children from the socialists who have been brainwashing them for at least two decades.
  • That's how we fix America!  From the bottom up.  Screw the useless politicians.
  • This should be the Charter of every Public School in the United States!

We need more School Administrators like Mr. Prager.

To j abrahms - I went to school in Southern California in the 60's & 70's and there was a huge mix of ethnicities... Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Polynesians...I don't ever remember witnessing any of the anti-American partitioning going on then like we see currently in our schools.

What is going on now stems from the far left liberals that crawled out of the RYM/SDS/Haight-Ashbury/Weather Underground/Black Panther Party mobs in the sixties that spread throughout many American universities.  The violent activities of these mobs were applauded by their weak willed professors, elites and uber liberal parents... their terrorism forced university administrators to cave into their demands (thinking that would satisfy and diffuse the situation - but only emboldened them and accelerated the mob violence).  Once these radicals left that scene, they purposefully infiltrated our educational system with the unwavering objective of instilling their anti-American propoganda at the entry level, indoctrinating our children towards dismantling the E Pluribus Unum, Out of Many One!  Unity not Diversity! ideals that are the foundation of what raised the American standard far above other countries.

Their agenda has been from inception to actively tear down the patriotism and loyalty to their country and instill the idea that America is an evil nation of greed, racism, materialism and hatred in our kids. Should they be left to continue to spread this undermining agenda, the the future of the United States of America is most certainly doomed and the ultimate goal of the original radical groups will have been achieved - poison the roots and the plant dies.

  • wELLK j ABRAHAM WE HAD ABOUT 7 OR 8 BLACKS AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE, IT IS THE BASIC PRINCIPLES WHICH WE LEARNED AND THESE ARE THE PRINCIPLES WHICH HAVED BEEN SCRAPPED IN THE NAME OF PROGRESS.  THE WORLD WOULD BE FAR BETTER OFF TODAY IF THEY HAD BEEN RETAINED AND NURTURED.  FOR YOUR INFORMATION, I STARTED THE INTEGRATION PROCESS IN MY LOCAL Y M C A WHICH WAS CONTROLLED BY DIE HARD SOUTHERN BAPTISTS AND HAD NO BLACKS, NO JEWS, NO LATINOS, NO CATHOLICS, ETC. WHEN I WAS IN THE 8TH GRADE. WHEN I RETURNED AFTER MY TOUR IN THE U S AIR FORCE, I VISITED THE Y AND FOUND THAT IT HAD BECOME FULLY INTEGRATED

DID YOU DO ANTHING TO IMPROVE YOUR COMMUNITY WHEN YOU WERE IN SCHOOL

  • @abrahms

I grew up in a very poor area and had the benefit of many black and hispanic friends.  I did not believe being an American referenced to skin, race or religion.  I viewed my classmates more like family members and we still meet often.  In fact we find reasons to get together.  For me or them to travel means about 450 mile round trip.  Since I live quite a distance.  School shouldn't cause schisms to foster or fester, but should be institutions that promote excellence.  Far too long, teachers have embrace their professions as a job.  A JOB doesn't require a degree.  Teachers should conduct themselves and wear attire as a professional a honor their chosen career.  I think this Standard of a Principal should apply to teachers as well.  We need to raise the bar not lower it.

  • Amen! Well said. And with that, the Pledge Of Allegiance:

    http://teapartyorg.ning.com/forum/topics/patriotic-pledge-of-allegi...

    Patriotic Pledge Of Allegiance
This is my Patriotic rendition of the Pledge Of Allegiance with my own monologue preceding it. There are people who say they hate America They are…
  • Great job, Dennis!   I couldn't have said it better myself.

These were the principles and general philosophies by which I was educated in public school, and the same ideals and principles by which I raised my own children.  They can attest to this salient fact today, and are very happy with their education, have acquired a level of self-esteem because of their individual accomplishments, and very stable emotionally and mentally.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.  I have the greatest respect for all my teachers to this very day, and would defend them against anyone who would try to degrade or demean them, including the principals and counselors who disciplined me at the end of a wooden paddle or hit me between the eyes with a piece of chalk when I was not paying attention in class.  Oh yes, we need to bring this back to our classrooms in the worst way.

Thank you for publishing this excellent document.  God bless America, "In God We Trust"
