MEME OF THE DAY "Put trust and faith in our government" Joe Biden "In America we don't worship government, we worship God" Donald Trump CAN I GET AN AMEN?! - )

Ending the pandemic has proved hard in the United States, and decades-long political dynamics are a big part of the problem.

Not only has distrust in government contributed to vaccine hesitancy, but following a script too long in the making, many Republican leaders have encouraged citizens to see mitigation methods — like mask and vaccine mandates — as driven by malevolent motives....

This is the Republican playbook in 2021. But it’s nothing new. This sort of “heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy” epitomizes what historian Richard Hofstadter labeled “the paranoid style in American politics” almost five decades ago.

In fact, anti-government rhetoric has been the central strategy of the contemporary Republican Party and the glue that most reliably bound together its coalition dating back to Barry Goldwater and the rise of the conservative movement within the GOP.

  • Ron, It has a great long while since I heard such a "Red Necked Diatribe"! Consider for a moment the greatest portion of what the then MEDIA/over 30 generation referred to as " Hippies " were actually "Baby Boomers". Those who were educated by surviving Veterans of WWII and Korea who taught that the Duty of All American Citizens is to be Fit, Learned and to Question. A large majority of what was referred to as Hippies were returning Vietnam Veterans, full of questions. The " Hair" was a challenge with the questions. The Watts Riots with "Live TV coverage and the Police stating rumors of use of automatic weapons by them were false, while on the " Green Screen" the Police are using machine guns with the bullets leaving holes on the outside walls of the apartment buildings. Students at that time didn't receive "Government Loans", so most worked to pay for College or utilized the G.I.Bill. They Paid for the Right to be On Campus and that alone allowed the Right of Demonstrations without interference, providing no destruction. Not for Police Beatings nor National Guard Shootings. The Generation you speak so lowly of actually revived " The Great American Experiment." The Sovereign Citizens and the Servant Governments. In fact I was among those in that era. We were Fishermen, Loggers, Mill Workers, Longshoremen, and people who worked hard for their way of life. We even had rhetorical answer then for Red Necks, "We're long haired Hippies and we're for peace and love, and if you're not, We'll Kill Ya." Life's lessons. I'll leave you with a final thought knowing we have similar experiences with friends and death. I knew two brothers. Loggers, both of them and they built their home up on a river. One of the brother's girl friend got angry for one reason or another and went to the County Sheriff's Office and filed a Rape Charge against one of the brothers. Both were Vietnam Vets and both had let their hair grow. Well Allan, the Sheriff, organized A big group of posse'. The girl changed her mind within an hour or so and demanded the Charge be dropped. Allan wouldn't hear of it. Before Sunrise the home was surrounded. The older brother went out to feed the livestock and was gunned down His younger brother hearing the shots, ran to the door and was killed. They were left there for the Coroner while Alan and his group went to breakfast. I know what happened. I was born and raised in this environment. Where I've traveled throughout this Country it is the same until the Cities and Suburbs.

    • First, Hippies were not the majority of Baby Boomers, quite the opposite... they were radicalized dissidents, often Marxist sympathizers who denigrate society and the American experience. They were part of the Marxist vanguard and revolution in America,  They were not patriots.  Being a two-time returning American Vietnam veteran I find it insane to believe that the majority or even a minority were HIppies.... Didn't they burn their draft cards and go to Canada?  You're frankly foolish if you think many hippies signed up to go to Viet Nam.... even if they failed to evade the draft they were likely discharged before they finished AIT...

As for the Watts riots... entire city blocks and neighborhoods were set afire and destroyed.  There are volumes of 'live' media coverage of the riots, documenting the serious destruction in Watts. The use of automatic weapons, albeit few, is documented in court cases. If you failed to watch the live footage, read the court cases, or volumes of books written on the subject... Green screen DIGITAL images were not around in the days of Watts (1965).   Digital imaging did not take hold until the 1970's.

The idea that disruptive violent demonstrations that shut down campuses were legal or protected speech is ludicrous... I witnessed them personally, and they were not peaceful or lawful demonstrations.  Many of the activists present were not even STUDENTS.. they were off-campus radical Marxists (members of the SDS and Weatherman underground Marxist groups).  By the way, there were very few instances of actual police beatings (responding to assault from those resisting arrest is not a beating).  And the ONLY National Guard shooting occurred in Ohio... the incident resulted from the rioters throwing large rocks (using deadly force) at the National Guard Troops; while hundreds of them rushed a small isolated national guard force, that feared for their lives... the incident was the direct result of rioters using deadly fore to attacked the National Guard.  No shooting would have occurred if the rioters had acted lawfully and disbursed when ordered. Riot and criminal assault are not protected speech or assembly.

Please post in context any statement where I called hard-working Americans Lowly... I certainly don't equate the working Americans with HIPPIES... there is a very distinct difference. I was one of those working Americans. I was a Union member and worked my way through college... at a canary and at times in the fields of California picking and processing crops. I knew several individuals who were of the Hippie movement and they were lazy, disrespectful, anti-social, and trouble makers... As for peace and love... that sentiment was artificial, it ended anytime they didn't get their way. Hippies were the spoiled children of absentee or delinquent parents. I now understand the underlying basis for many of your comments... HIPPIE.

We are unlikely to see eye to eye on anything substantive...  I simply have very little in common with Hippies.

  • Well James, On balance, I also remember Conservatives passing laws in the 60's banning the gathering of more than 6 people at a time and Agnew's wanting the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" banned from the radio air waves as it was  "Drug Music!" Evidently he didn't realize it was verbatim "Ecclesiactics." I was present in a Diner when someone asked the County Sheriff "What do I do if I see one of those Hippies along the side of the road?" The Sheriff's response "Run over them. You can call and report you hit an animal if you feel bad about it." There was a Great Division in Our Nation at that time, not so dissimilar from today. Its very apparent in the MEDIA up through the words written here. Perhaps it is time to ask, "What have We learned?"

    • There is a great difference between then and now... First, the so-called 'Hippie" generation was a belligerent minority.  They flaunted their lawlessness (drug abuse, sexually explicate life, foul mouth, petty crimes, etc,), Their generation deliberately engaged in anti-social behavior to incite division and the anger of the majority.  That generation was the vanguard of the Marxist movement and was lead by individuals like Alinsky, Ayers, and Dohrn... groups like the SDS and Weatherman, Marxist subversives mobilizing for violent revolution.  They had nothing in common with the 'America First' movement and its members or their approach to government reform.

Hippie (especially in the 1960s) a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair, associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs.

Today's Patriot movement is not looking for violent revolution or civil unrest... The Patriot simply wants the government to respond Constitutionally to their petitions and their elections to reflect the will of the people... not the twisted work of political operatives.  There is no comparison between then and now... between the violence and lawlessness of the subversives in the Marxist movement and the America First Movement.

  • BTW, I trust the media even less, including WAPO, caught them in too damn many lies.

  • I learned not to trust the government LONG before the Barry Goldwater and Johnson election.

Since then I have seen NOTHING to make me doubt my distrust.

  • Sorry Joe as for me and my house, I will trust and serve the Lord and follow God’s commandments:

    1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
    2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

  • The Republican Party has stoked distrust???  Give me a break; the Democrats have done a very good job of that themselves.  If they tried telling the truth every once in a while, people might not be so suspicious.

  • In the 1960's I was young but a JFK liberal, I turned against the war in Vietnam when I found out we were not trying to win, and have never trusted the government since. The 9/11 attack made me examine my beliefs, I couldn't find anything in the democrat party that I could believe in, the worn out propaganda didn't work anymore. I was not a registered member of either party, always registered as independant. Now I found myself to be Conservative, still don't have much faith in the GOP. But the democrat party has been taken over by a marxist agenda. This last election has shown without any doubt that the democrat marxist (socialist/communist) party is the enemy to the Constitution and the citizens of America. In the 1950's there was a chance to rid America of the comminists, but their propaganda machine went to work and turned the tables on America and gained a strong foot hold, and has been getting stronger since. Even if all the elected enemies could be ousted, the deepstate is entrench in the government. Thousands of unelected government employees, that can't be fired or removed are in every part of the government.  Prove it?!  Just take a look at the changes in America in the last nine months after the democrat marxist party gained control by fraud election (the real insurrection) of the government.
