Preschool teacher Michele Ryan was nearly in tears when she filled out her 2020 taxes and learned that she owes the government more than $3,100 despite being unemployed for a significant portion of last year. She owes about $1,000 in taxes on unemployment income, but the bulk of her bill - $2,100 - is to repay some of the subsidy she received to buy health insurance last year.
According to the federal government, Ryan earned too much money on unemployment. It was more money than she would have made working as a preschool teacher, and it bumped her into a different income bracket that reduced her Affordable Care Act insurance subsidy. She’s desperate to keep health insurance in the middle of the pandemic and is trying to figure out how to pay the hefty bill.
“Where do I come up with all of this money to pay them back during the pandemic?” said Ryan, 50, who lives in Bergen County, N.J. “What did they expect us to do? Drop Obamacare during the pandemic?”
Ryan is among the millions of Americans encountering surprisingly large tax bills in the midst of a global health crisis. She was finally able to go back to work at a day-care center, but she says she doesn’t have $3,100. She used what savings she had to move from Pennsylvania to New Jersey when a job opened up in her field.

This is an interesting problem. Obamacare tax mandate is supposed to be effectively dead, no thanks to the gutless Supreme Court Chief Justice. Yet I have not had healthcare insurance for effectively the beginning of the year. So I am being told by tax consultants that I should seek Californias version in the first 90 days of 2021, and it would likely be no cost. But if I gain employment in the year 2021, a penalty fee comes my way. My age in life or whether I want it or not, seems not to matter. The Jekyl and Hyde reasoning seems to be prodding me into a position where (get ready for it).......I will own nothing (since I will not be able to earn an independent living), but will be happy about it (since then my needs will be taken care of, as long as I follow directions).
Now where have you seen that expression before?

Serves her right - she should have been back teaching a long time ago. She choose to live in a nighly Democrat area and is probably a Democrat herself so she can just cry those crocodile tears and pay up.
Let her pay it back in installments... she knew that she would have to pay taxes on certain forms of income and that her qualifying for health care assistance was dependent on her income... but she decided to take the money and do what... save it? No... she spent it. I would be interested to know how... was it on new electronic, a car, vacation, entertainment... she certainly didn't save it.
I have no sympathy for those who 'play the system' and then cry when it bites them in the rear. Here in Missouri, over 40K people took more unemployment insurance than they were entitled to receive... to the tune of over 135 Million and are now crying because they are being asked to pay it back. They had no problem in making more money on unemployment than they earned in wages... now that they have to pay it back some in the State Legislature are moving to forgive the debt... my rear. One gets more on unemployment than their working wage and when asked to pay it back they balk... Some even stopped paying rent using the moratorium on evictions... and are now crying because they are expected to pay back rents...
This sort of economic irresponsibility and immoral conduct is what a Marxist State breeds... promoting victimhood out of criminal conduct.
