Actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a movie set and killed the cinematographer, authorities said. The director of the Western being filmed was also wounded, and authorities are investigating what happened.

Halyna Hutchins, cinematographer on the movie “Rust,” and director Joel Souza were shot Thursday on the rustic film set in the desert on the southern outskirts of Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s officials said.

A spokesperson for Baldwin said there was an accident on the set involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks, though a charge without a metal projectile is unlikely to kill at a moderate distance. Sheriff’s spokesman Juan Rios said detectives were investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported the 63-year-old Baldwin was seen Thursday outside the sheriff’s office in tears, but attempts to get comment from him were unsuccessful.

Hutchins, 42, was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, the sheriff's department said. Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

  • Something is not right-!!! PROP's (don't shoot REAL AMMO) shoot blanks only-!!! One hell of a action(Killing a Person) to have to go through and live with the rest of your life-!!!

  • Let's wait for all the facts... it is possible that the prop manager may have loaded the weapon with improper ammunition or the blanks were improperly loaded at the factory.  It is possible that Alec unknowingly discharged the weapon, in a scene that required him to point the weapon in the direction of those hit... It could be a legitimate accident on Alec's part. We simply don't have all the facts to make an informed decision...

P/S I am not an Alex Baldwin fan his politics stink...

    • That's a sane response, Ronald.  I hope others take your view.  I despise Alec Baldwin, but I won't make accusations until the facts come out.

  • Maybe this will be a lesson in humbleness and humility for this walking piece of human feces.  Because of his careless handling of a firearm, he should at least be charged with manslaughter.

    • I doubt many actors check their weapons for the type of ammo loaded before each scene... I also doubt many of them are expert enough to know what they are doing when it comes to clearing a weapon or inspecting ammo.  They undoubtedly rely on the prop manager and weapons technician to ensure the weapons are safe and properly loaded for the scene being filmed.  Live ammo may be used in some scenes, where their effects are wanted and there is no one in the field of fire... Maybe the prop manager or weapons specialist failed to clear the weapon of live rounds?  Who knows, we will have to wait on the investigation and the facts before making any judgment on Baldwin's culpability for criminal action.

    • Well put, Larry.

  • the news just sadi there was a live round in the gun...

    • I would think that an actor, handed a real firearm, loaded with something to make a noise, and then aiming it at another person, would at the very least take the responsibility to check the weapon and its load out prior to firing it at another person.  I certainly would.  Why wouldn't Baldwin?

This is an act of neglect in safety.

I was taught as a child to never point a gun at anyone unless you were intending to fire at the target.  Plus, If my gun ever fired accidentally, even once, then I would not have gun anymore.

When I was in the Army in training, and even afterwards, one of my concerns was all of those men handling all of those lethal weapons and keeping everyone safe from 'accidental' firing.  A five man 'Fire Team' armed with an M-14 (in my case) and five 20 round magazines can lay down a field of fire that is absolutely astonishing in effect, and absolutely  deadly as a result.

Guns are not toys.  Baldwin apparently forgot that fact for a moment.  And that is all it takes.  One moment.
