Sen. Ben Sasse proposed a slew of major changes to the Senate this week — including a repeal of the Constitutional amendment that provided for direct election of its members.

The Nebraska Republican said in an interview that he recognizes it could take many years to implement the major overhaul he has in mind.

“So we’re going to need to tell the truth about the fact that the Senate is a dysfunctional institution to be able to get enough ideas on the menu that you can start to figure out where you’d forge consensus,” Sasse told The World-Herald.

He unveiled his ideas in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, writing that the founding fathers would be shocked at the current state of affairs.

  • Nominated by the governor and debated and voted on by the legislature cements in place who they represent, the state!  Not a party, not the federal government, not the president, The state and only the state. Their pay should come in the form of a check from their state, not the federal government. This would remove tenure from the equation, A senator would serve at the pleasure of state governors and legislatures. They could be a senator for as little as a few days to forty years. This nation's statesman used to come from service in the senate and we have not had any since the 17th amendment.

  • Get rtd of 17th A

  • I am for returning to the original Constitutional method for selecting US Senators... however, I would rather see a Term Limits Amendment... one term of 6yrs, for all elected and appointed officials, with 1/3rd of all elected and appointed officials standing for election or appointment every 2 yrs.  There could be a provision for US Senators being selected by state legislatures ... with the one-term limit imposed.  States should be able to control the appointment of their US Senators and have the ability to recall them at any time... appointing new senators as they deem appropriate... thus controlling how they vote.

    • Yep, Convention of States anyone to repeal the 17th Amendment? ......... or do you honestly believe that the Congress is going to limit their own power through actions of their own? Hahaha!

    • interesting

  • Are the Democrats following the constitution?

    • Well, let's see! They have puked up a v.p. candidate that slept her way to her position, she has the I.Q. of the rocks in the box, she hates America, and lastly, she does not meet the U.S. Constitution's qualifications to even run for v.p., as her mother is a east indian, her father is jamaican, and she was born several years before her parents applied and became citizens of the U.S.A.. Why is this not an issue even with the right side of the aisle? Because they are complicit in the incremental destruction of our Constitution, are bawless cowards, and traitors.

    • that is exactly what Obama did the Democrats doesn't care they will pick someone who hate this nation that's their moto.

    • Exactly... both political parties are totally corrupt... Kamala Harris's nomination is just one more proof of their corruption.  Both Parties are going where no party has gone before ... into the pits of hell and corruption.

    • No.
