Former President Donald Trump has actually gained -- not lost -- political clout since leaving office, a political observer asserted Friday.

Politico reporter Tara Palmeri's observation runs contrary to the assumptions of many in the Washington D.C. establishment and the mainstream media.

"People don't want to hear anything against Trump," Palmeri said during an appearance on MSNBC. "Actually, the more he stays out of the media, the more that he becomes this martyr, this looming figure over the GOP."

In fact, there is now a "crusade" being waged on behalf of the former president in places like Wyoming, where Trump is "way more popular" that the state's high-ranking congressional Republican, U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, Palmeri said.

She drew the conclusion after speaking with locals in the Cowboy State about Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump while covering an anti-Cheney rally led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

"I actually went out of my way to try to find someone who would defend her and I really could not," Palmeri told MSNBC. "She didn't have that much name recognition, considering she's a Cheney. ... I mean, I said her name at a hardware store, and someone shouted a threat."

The "overwhelming" consensus that Palmeri heard from voters was that Cheney's vote for impeachment was "not a vote for Wyoming" and "therefore she has to go."

She then described an apparent disconnect between what's perceived as truth in D.C. and what’s perceived as truth in Cheyenne. Palmeri mentioned locals not wearing masks, expressing distrust of the coronavirus vaccine, claiming both that the number of reported deaths from the pandemic were "inflated," believing the 2020 presidential election wasn't legitimate, and that the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill was "staged" by Antifa.

"I think the base is getting stronger, truly. I think an impeachment [conviction] would make him even more powerful."

"I hate that they're so distrustful," Palmeri said. "It feels like another world but that's what's on the ground and I don't think that we can ignore it and I'm really happy that I went out there and saw it because I think that there's a huge disconnect between Washington and the rest of the country."

  • Yep, it must scare the liberal progressive elites and mainstream media sycophants into apoplexia to discover that there is a vast multitude of patriotic and independent citizens in our country who neither need nor want to be taken care of by a smothering nanny state government. Get the unelected bureaucrats and spineless elected officials out of the way and we can continue to keep our country great. But it will take millions of us to stand up unafraid of their cancel culture and become the activist self governing citizens that our constitutional republic requires if it is to survive and defeat the socialist monster. Get your legislators to support and join the effort to call a Convention of States to bind our out of control government with the chains of the very Constitution that they are trying to circumvent.    http://conventionofstates.com/?ref=49564

  • The old Republican party that refuses to stand on principles, rolls over on its back, and whines and cries while the left rips out their throat, is dead with their clubhouse scheduled for demolition in November 2022.

I have always thought of the current leadership of the GOP as an exclusive club with a secluded place to meet and plan to weaken the constitution and stab the people in the back by agreeing with the Democrats. That clubhouse!

The new Republican party, the Trump Republican party, cleaning itself of RINOs, will stand up in November of 2022.

    • Roger, I agree. We need to bring back Republican principles that Trump shows so clearly: patriotism, Christianity, family, fiscal responsibility, etc.

  • Wyoming sounds like it has some really smart people.

    • There are many states that are really really smart.

  • This POS Politico liberal hack hasn't seen anything yet.

  • Well well well - a Politico reporter actually doing her job - this is a first.  And she is probably correct; i beleive the Trump supporters are more vocal in their support of him and therefore he is becoming more powerful..  It could also be because people see what a mess Biden is creating.  She is very stupid when she says they are distrustful - the people of Wyoming are probably more informed then she is and don't have the blinders on that she does.  Hey stupid wake up - of course there is a disconnect between Washington D C and the rest of the country - lies and unconstitutional activities rule in D.C.; that's not what we who are out of Washington D.C. want!!!

    • LOL!  ANY reporter actually doing their job is a rarity nowadays!  I expect she's probably going to be fired soon for daring to speak against the normal propoganda.

  • Trump had 72% if the legal votes. Today he'd have more than 80%. He alone made America great again and we the people want him in office for another term, at least. We can clearly see how great he made America and how proud we all were of the America he created.
