Much of the impeachment case against former President Trump in this week’s Senate trial has focused on his claims about election fraud, but a majority of Republican voters agree with his claim that Joe Biden was not elected fairly.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters say Biden won the 2020 presidential election fairly, but 61% of Republicans say Biden did not win the election fairly. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The impeachment case presented by House Democrats in the Senate trial accuses Trump of making false claims about election fraud that incited his supporters to riot at the Capitol on January 6. But 34% of voters say Biden did not win the election fairly, including 36% of voters not affiliated with either major political party.

Furthermore, a majority say public figures should not be punished for saying the 2020 election was stolen. Only 35% of voters say public figures should be punished for saying the election was stolen, while 54% say they should not, and 11% are not sure.

The survey of 918 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on February 10-11, 2021 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

The percentage of voters who believe Biden won the 2020 election fairly has not increased much since early January. At that time, 55% percent of voters said Biden had been elected fairly, 39% said he had not. In that January survey, 69% of GOP voters said Biden had not won the presidential election fairly.

Widespread use of mail-in voting during the 2020 election is a major factor undermining confidence in the results. While 52% of voters say mail-in voting worked well for the most part, 42% say mail-in voting led to unprecedented voter fraud in the 2020 election. Those numbers have not changed much since early December, when 39% said mail-in voting led to fraud in the election.

  • There is new evidence being found almost every week now. The whole thing was dodgey from the very start. It's funny how Clinton can rant and rave about her loss being unfair because the election was'nt on the up and up and the Democrats agreed with her. But when the shoe's on the other foot and it happens to Trump and his people say the same thing he's branded an instigator and his people a bunch of crazies. There was no proof of wrong doing by the right in Hillarys case, but there is in Trumps case. Plenty of proof! The problem is that there's just so much corruption in high places to be able to do anything about it, and the right is too weak to fight for our presidents and his peoples rights. They let the left walk all over them. There are things that could have and should have been done that nobody had enough gumption to do. It's no wonder the people are mad and want to riot. I don't think Trump had to say or do anything to set them off. They have been a volcano ready to burst since the election and it finally happened. And I can predict that as Biden continues to destroy our country I can't see the people taking it lying down.

    • Botom line is Hilary Clinton and the Obama administrtion should have been in jail a long time ago

    • With a viable Donald J. Trump 2024 candidacy, any and every newly discovered 2020 election discrepancy, will be glowing green kryptonite to Deep Staters.

Couldn't happen to nicer bunch of jerks.

  • It's not that we don't think he was not fairly elected.  WE KNOW HE WASN'T FAIRLY ELECTED.  It's going to require a Civil War to stop the left.  Better all on the left be killed than to see our great Constitutional Republic perish at their malfeasance and lies.

    • Watch for the the change in GOP leadership that must occur for it to even survive.

A civil war in Constitutional defense is an unavoidable solution.

A civil war in Constitutional offense promises disaster.

    • Hey! Michael, is it going to be one?

    • I am hoping for a purge of institutional GOP leadership. They are millstones around the Nations collective necks.

The other two conditions are predictions depending on the premise.

  • A first grader could figure out the election was totally rigged

  • FRAUD - STOLEN - IMPEACH PELOSI, BIDEN and a roomful of LIBERALS.

    Biden is mentally lost

    • starting with the Obama administration
