  • A major Los Angeles teachers union said a slew of left-wing policy proposals will need to be implemented to pay for the cost of safely reopening schools in the Fall.
  • The United Teachers Los Angeles union called for the defunding of police, a moratorium on new charter schools, new wealth taxes on California’s millionaires and billionaires and Medicare-for-All at the federal level in a research paper issued Thursday.
  • “It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk,” said United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz.

A major Los Angeles teachers union said in a research paper issued Thursday that the reopening of schools should be conditioned upon the passage of Medicare-for-All at the federal level, along with a slew of other left-wing policy staples at the state and local levels.

“It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk,” United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a statement unveiling the paper. “We all want to physically open schools and be back with our students, but lives hang in the balance. Safety has to be the priority. We need to get this right for our communities.”

The paper outlined a lengthy list of health and safety measures the union identified as necessary measures to ensure schools can operate safely amid the coronavirus pandemic, including robust testing, contract tracing, sterilization regimens and physical distancing in the classroom.

The union said the costs to implement the measures necessary to restart Los Angeles schools safely could exceed $250 million, funds it said would be available if “federal, state and local governments are willing to finally prioritize pupils over plutocrats.”

  • The hope for a better world lies in the unsung imagination and productivity of our Children... A good education is key to tapping into the full capability and potential of our youth... We need a voucher system... not a system designed to promote a socialist indoctrination.

  • Fire them all and let Christian Americans take over teaching, at least the kids would learn real history

    • Defund Public Schools... give Parent's Education Vouchers for the Full Amount of the State's payments to local public schools... and let the parent decide where to send their child, public, private, parochial, or vocational schools.  Provide only minimum standards for curriculum and test scores to qualify an institution for receiving public education vouchers.  Let the Unions suffer from their own excesses and failed socialist policies and programs.

  • This nonsense would stop if they parents received a monetary chit allowing them to pick the school of their choice.  The competition would provide the solution and the children would be better educated.

  • Defunding the police is the first step in a communist takeover.  Exactly what happened in Russia 80+ years ago.  WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE CONSERVATIVES AND PATRIOTS END UP IN A GUGLAG.

  • NO to these bastards!!!

  • For years people have been saying to get rid of these unions. They are no longer needed. They exist only as a means of laundering money, employees dues, to Democrats. These organizations should be outlawed for they do not serve the people.

    • I agree, should we actually write to lawmakers and even to the White House, to ask for this kind of bill/reform? If many people, individually, ask for the same thing, could this make an impact?

  • These unions are strangling themselves. This group is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. They are  not going to come out of this unscathed. If I were President I would find a way to give every parent a voucher that would allow them to send their child to the school of their choice. The schools would have to compete with the best teachers they could find. That would leave all these bottom feeding unions by the wayside. Teachers would have to get work as private contractors or employees; no unions. Unions are their own worst enemy.

    • You are right on target..But who will listen to this sane and logical solution?  The silent majority is too darn silent.
