President Donald Trump’s campaign on Monday slammed 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden for declining to do more than three debates, as the Trump campaign has been pushing to do four.

“It’s pretty obvious that Joe Biden’s handlers are afraid to send their candidate out without a script and teleprompter handy. An earlier and longer debate schedule is necessary so Americans can see the clear difference between President Trump’s vibrant leadership and Biden’s confused meandering,” Tim Murtaugh, Trump 2020 communications director said in a statement.

“Based on his performance in a Philadelphia speech last week, it’s not a question of trusting Biden to answer the phone at 3:00 AM in an emergency, it’s a question of whether he can answer it at 3:00 in the afternoon. It’s been 81 days since Biden held a press conference and his handlers continue to encourage him to stay hidden. Americans deserve better,” Murtaugh continued.

The statement comes hours after Biden’s campaign committed to three debates with Trump before the election in November.

“Joe Biden looks forward to facing Donald Trump in a multi-debate series that the American people have come to expect from their leaders; we hope that President Trump would not break that tradition or make excuses for a refusal to participate,” Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote in a letter to the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, the Washington Post first reported.

Move over, “Sleepy Joe.” President Trump’s campaign is increasingly painting the presumptive Democratic nominee as “Beijing Biden,” and “Crooked, Swampy Joe” may not be too far behind.

But Sleepy, Swampy, and Crooked are not a reprise of the seven dwarfs. Joe Biden has now accumulated a number of scandals, ranging from his son Hunter’s business dealings with China, a country on which the candidate himself is seen as soft, to the Tara Reade sexual assault allegations. The latest revelation is that as vice president, Biden was informed of the “unmasking” requests concerning then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn, something he had previously denied.

Trumpworld is packaging all these hits together into one cohesive case against Biden that is reminiscent of its successful 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton. Its argument is that the Democratic standard-bearer is a longtime district insider and swamp creature running against Trump the disruptor.

“If you smell the stink of the D.C. swamp, it’s because it’s all over Joe Biden,” said Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh. “His family has enriched itself thanks to his positions of power, he thinks he doesn’t have to play by the same rules as everyone else, and he’s up to his eyeballs in the plot to take down the Trump administration through the Russia collusion hoax. And every time someone asks him about it, he gets confused and loses his temper. The D.C. establishment got the candidate they wanted in Joe Biden, and so did China.”

The conventional wisdom is that the coronavirus pandemic has made President Donald Trump’s re-election effort more difficult.

It has shocked the once-mighty economy — previously Trump’s strongest argument — and has allowed his rival, Joe Biden, to hide out in his Wilmington, Delaware, basement, away from media scrutiny (assuming journalists would otherwise be willing to scrutinize the presumptive Democratic nominee at all).

But the opposite is true: Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has boosted his case for re-election.

It has shown that he is willing to work tirelessly for the national interest and to try everything that might help the American people. At the same time, Trump has resisted the urge of past presidents to build bigger government in a crisis. He has spent money on relief like FDR, while deregulating and decentralizing like Ronald Reagan.

Many elections come down to a choice between the lesser of two evils. Not this one.

Democrats are nominating a candidate who may not even be able to do the job, given his age and evident frailty. They are insulting their own voters by asking them to overlook Biden’s corruption and Tara Reade’s credible allegations of sexual misconduct.

The best they can offer is the promise Biden’s team will be Obama 3.0 — for whatever that’s worth.

In addition, Biden’s party has moved so far to the left that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) may as well have won the nomination. Biden and the Democrats offer higher taxes; energy restrictions; more meddling with health insurance; taxpayer-funded abortions until birth; and a return to a foreign policy of appeasement.

As Americans wrestle with unprecedented change, Democrats promise to exploit the crisis to change things even more.
