Leaders in education, politics and other areas gathered in suburban Evanston Sunday to ask that the Illinois State Board of Education change the history curriculum at schools statewide, and temporarily halt instruction until an alternative is decided upon.

At a news conference, State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford said current history teachings lead to a racist society and overlook the contributions of women and minorities.

Before the event Sunday, Rep. Ford's office distributed a news release "Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools," in which Ford asked the ISBOE and school districts to immediately remove history curriculum and books that "unfairly communicate" history "until a suitable alternative is developed."

The representative instead suggested that schools devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand democratic processes.

"It costs us as a society in the long run forever when we don’t understand our brothers and sisters that we live, work and play with,” Ford said.

The state representative is sponsoring a bill that would require elementary schools to teach students about the civil rights movement.

  • George Santayana said it best: "Those that do not understand their history are condemned to repeat it." The fact is that whatever historical abuses you want to identify were not the work of evil men, but all took place in a social and economic context and need to be understood accordingly. To deny the whole of history or worse, to ignore it, is to replace material (real world) understanding with abstract moralism; not a very good posture for people who deny God. Bonaparte said that "history is a lie agreed upon," and never will this have proven more true than if this proposal is adopted.

  • There is still slavery going on in the form of human trafficking!!

  • Someone tell me why lower the standards even further!?  Those kids are in hopeless schools and do very poorly - lots don't graduate.

  • And this is good? Explain how.

How can you know where you are if you don't know where you came from?

  • Ignorance on parade.

  • Makes sense to me. History might reveal that slavery was ended. That we ALL have rights. That we always were supposed to be equal. That white people did good things, as did black.

Blows their narrative if the truth is told.

  • ORWELL WARNED US IN 1984 WHEN HE SAID: THE PAST WAS ERASED, ERASURE FORGOTTEN LIE BECAME TRUTH.  WE MUST NEVER ALLOW THE HISTORY OF AMERICA TO BE FORGOTTEN OR ERASED.   WE MUST TEACH IT TO OUR KIDS NOW BEFORE THEY EVER GET TO SCHOOL ALONG W/THE CONSTITUTION , GOD AND CAPITALISM.   TAKE YOUR CHILD TO A GUN RANGE IF OLD ENOUGH AND TEACH THEM YOURSELF.

WE HAVE TO SAVE THIS NATION AND THE LEFT IS DETERMINED TO END IT ALL OF IT.

    • AMEN TO THAT!!
