Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is on a mission. He’s looking for highways with a racist past and is aiming to “help reconnect cities and neighborhoods racially segregated or divided by road projects.” Buttigieg is examining interstate highways, built with federal dollars, “where a piece of infrastructure cuts off a neighborhood or a community because of how it was built,” said Buttigieg in a speech announcing the $1 billion “Reconnecting Communities” program.
“How it was built”? What does that mean? Does that statement refer to the racial makeup of businesses and residents? This is just more of the “disparate racial results” of government action, not because there was a racist intent behind it.
We’re told that these divisions deliberately targeted black neighborhoods because, well, racism, of course. States and communities will be able to “apply for the federal aid over five years to rectify harm caused by roadways that were built primarily through lower-income, Black communities after the 1950s creation of the interstate highway system.”

Demolishing miles of interstate and US highways will not correct neighborhood deficiencies.. from the lack of viable employment and decades of dependency... nor, will it help the environment or reduce greenhouse gases. What it will do is disrupt and aggravate the local biosphere, and disrupt the social stability and commercial interests in the area. We must also remember, that for several decades now all highways are built only after exhaustive environmental and social impact studies were done and their routes approved.
Buttigieg now wants to ignore those environmental impact statements... and studies in order to mitigate some lunatic notion that our highway systems were racially engineered by the KKK... IS HE TOTALLY NUTS?

So, it will be asphalt-paved black highways... Asphalt is a carbon-based road surfacing material that uses large quantities of crude oil to construct and MAINTAIN.our local roads. Or, maybe we will revert to Dionkies and bicycles as the primary means of transport. in a new and sustainable America?. Some day it will be the lucky ones who are permitted to use electric golf carts to get around town.
. But why worry about roads... There will be no jobs to commute to, money for vacation travel or markets reqjuiring heavy transport... Why even have highways?. We can revert to third-world sustainable transport. Now that's an equitable outcome. Donkey's for every one.
