However, the epitome of irony struck during his defeat of Hillary Clinton in the primary election. He astonished the nation, and of course himself, by shattering all previous political fundraising records using the same process he had successfully advocated against for use in general elections. The temptation to break his promise and use his newly discovered fundraising prowess prevailed. Bedamned a level playing field, his integrity, and Senator John McCain, the Republican candidate, one of whom he had persuaded to make the same promise. On February 26, 2008, the Late Tim Russert of NBC’s “Meet the Press”, one of the most trusted and revered television anchors ever, asked him verbatim, i.e., “Mr. Obama, let me ask you about motivating, inspiring, keeping your word; there is nothing more important. Why won’t you keep your word made in writing to abide by public funding rules?” His response was egregiously evasive and disingenuous at best. He went on to raise 337 million dollars, which coupled with 423 million left over from his primary campaign, he had an unprecedented 760 million dollars to run his general election campaign. His broken promise forced McCain to also raise funds. However, the amount raised coupled with leftovers from his primary campaign, left him with only 358 million dollars to run his campaign. During their first debate, when he called out Obama for breaking the promise, his persona appeared uncharacteristically meek, and he did not respond. Of course, he had no legitimate defense for having publicly exhibited the epitome of dishonesty, hypocrisy, and arrogance. Most unfortunate, is that he squandered the ultimate platform and opportunity, to set an unprecedented public example of stalwart integrity for all government officials to embrace and emulate, and for this nation’s youths and young adults, not to mention his two young daughters.
