Beirut blast: Many injured as large blast rocks city

A large blast has hit the Lebanese capital, Beirut, ahead of the verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005.

Reports say the explosion was in the port area of the city, with unconfirmed reports of a second blast. It is not clear what caused them.

Video posted online showed a large mushroom cloud and extensive damage.

A UN tribunal is due to issue its verdict in the trial of four suspects in the murder by car bomb of Hariri. All four are members of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group, which has consistently denied any role in Hariri's death. They are being tried in absentia and the verdict is due on Friday.

The possible second explosion was reported to be at the Hariri residence in the city.

Lebanon's health minister, Hamad Hasan, has spoken of many injuries and extensive damage.

  • US Generals have already stated they believe a bomb, or bombs were involved.

    • Trump was the first one who called it. He has amazing insights into world affairs. We are blessed to have him as the leader of the free world, who restored the international reputation of the United States of America in all corners of the world again.

  • The blast was almost a big as a nuclear bomb.  2000+ people were injured/died.  These people need help.  Now is a good time for the UN to stop their BS and show the world what they will do to help these poor people.
Their country was in a severe economic downtrend, then they were hit with COVID-19, AND now this blast.  May God have mercy on those who died and those who were injured and there were too many.

  • I heard on MSNBC that the latest info is that the building contained confiscated high explosives, so you could say that it was a bombing!

  • Looks like a Cargo Container 'bomb' to me...

  • Sure doesn't look like a fireworks factory explosion.

  • Sure looks like the work of Muslim terrorists.

This is interesting. Did you know that Lebanon is under the control of Hezbollah?

Hariri stepped down as prime minister in October after failing to address demands of protesters demonstrating against years of corruption by a ruling elite which has driven Lebanon to its current financial crisis. His successor Hassan Diab, backed by Hezbollah and its allies, says the country must avoid further turmoil over the tribunal verdicts.
