Political Editors:  Above the Fold

BORDER FORTIFICATION: “Defense Secretary Mark Esper has signed off on spending $3.6 billion in Defense Department construction funds for 175 miles of wall on the southern border with Mexico. … Use of the money had been frozen by lower courts while a lawsuit proceeded. Last month, however, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the use of about $2.5 billion. A border wall was a keystone of the president’s 2016 election campaign, but Congress has resisted funding all of it. This year it allocated $1.4 billion, but the president wanted much more.” (Fox News)

VACUOUS VIRTUE SIGNALING: “Walmart said Tuesday it will discontinue all sales of handgun ammunition and sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition that can be used with military-style weapons, following two ‘horrific’ shootings at Walmart stores this summer. It will also stop all handgun sales in Alaska, marking its complete exit from the handguns category. The biggest retailer in the world also is asking customers at Walmart and Sam’s Club to no longer openly carry firearms in stores, in states where ‘open carry’ is allowed, unless they are authorized law enforcement officers.” (CNBC)

Around the Nation

HURRICANE DORIAN UPDATE: “Hurricane Dorian gradually leaves Florida behind Wednesday, setting its sights on the coasts of Georgia and then the Carolinas. These areas face a triple threat of ‘destructive winds, flooding rains, and life-threatening storm surges,’ according to the National Hurricane Center. While Dorian has stayed far enough off the coast to largely spare Florida from the worst of its wrath, it is forecast to make a much closer approach to the coastline of the Carolinas between late Wednesday and Thursday and could even make landfall. Impacts are thus expected to be more severe.” (Capital Weather Gang)

BACKGROUND-CHECK LOOPHOLE: According to National Review, “The lone gunman who killed seven and injured 22 in a series of drive-by shootings in Odessa and Midland, Texas on Saturday obtained the firearm he used in the attack through an illegal private sale. Local police told ABC News and other outlets that the shooter … previously attempted to purchase a firearm from a licensed seller but was denied after failing a background check due to his history of ‘mental illness.’ He then purchased the ‘AR-15 type’ rifle that he used in the attack from a private seller who was under no legal obligation to conduct a background check on him.” This is one of the few legit gun loopholes that conservatives might feel obligated to address.

SOLVING THE BIG PROBLEMS: “The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution declaring the National Rifle Association a "domestic terrorist organization” and urged the federal government to do the same — the latest escalation in the heated rhetoric from Democrats regarding the NRA in the wake of several deadly mass shootings.“ (Fox News)

DISTRICT SMACKDOWN: "A North Carolina court on Tuesday struck down the state’s current legislative districts for violating the rights of Democratic voters, forcing districts to be withdrawn ahead of the 2020 election. The three-judge panel’s opinion says that North Carolina’s General Assembly ‘had a partisan intent to create legislative districts that perpetuated a Republican-controlled’ assembly when drawing maps in 2017.” (The Hill)

Other Notables

WARNING SIGNS: “A key U.S. factory gauge unexpectedly contracted for the first time since 2016, sending stocks and bond yields lower and boosting expectations for interest-rate cuts as global manufacturing woes deepen. The Institute for Supply Management’s purchasing managers index fell to 49.1 in August, weaker than all forecasts in a Bloomberg survey of economists, data released Tuesday showed. Figures below 50 indicate the manufacturing economy is generally shrinking. The group’s gauge of new orders dropped to a more than seven-year low, while the production index hit the lowest since late 2015.” (Bloomberg)

BREXIT BLOCKADE: “British prime minister Boris Johnson’s government was defeated in a 27-301 vote on Tuesday by a group of rebel lawmakers who have opted to seize control of parliament in order to block the no-deal Brexit that Johnson has repeatedly threatened. A block of the Conservative Party sided with the opposition Labour Party in voting to seize control of parliamentary business on Wednesday in order to pass a bill that would prevent Johnson from exiting the European Union on the October 31 deadline without a deal.” (National Review)

HONG KONG CONCEDES: “Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said she will withdraw the highly controversial extradition bill which triggered months of protests. The proposal, introduced in April, would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China. The bill was suspended in June when Ms Lam called it ‘dead’, but she stopped short of withdrawing it.” (BBC)

Court Grants Significant New Discovery
in scumbag/liar-Clinton Email Case

by judicialwatch.org ~ Judicial Watch announced today that a federal judge granted seven additional depositions, three interrogatories and four document requests related to former Secretary of State scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton’s use of a private, unauthorized email server... scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton and her former top aide and current lawyer Cheryl Mills were given 30 days to oppose being deposed by Judicial Watch (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:14-cv-01242)). The court rejected Justice and State Department arguments to protect scumbag/liar-Clinton and the agencies from additional discovery and ordered agency lawyers to respond to Judicial Watch’s questions about their knowledge of the scumbag/liar-Clinton email issue. The court granted all of Judicial Watch’s requested discovery but gave scumbag/liar-Clinton and Mills 30 days to file any opposition to the requests to question them in person under oath. The new court-ordered discovery allows Judicial Watch to take testimony and gather evidence of scumbag/liar-Clinton’s handling of emails, specifically in an “after action memo” drafted by Heather Samuelson, scumbag/liar-Clinton’s senior advisor at State and White House liaison. The memo was created in December 2014 to memorialize the scumbag/liar-Clinton team’s processing of the scumbag/liar-Clinton emails. The discovery also asks for when Justice and State Department attorneys learned about scumbag/liar-Clinton’s private email use; and what senior records-keeping officials at the State Department knew about scumbag/liar-Clinton’s emails and when they knewit. This past Friday, Judicial Watch submitted the document request to scumbag/liar-Clinton’s attorneys for the “after action memo” that Samuelson created. The court specifically raised concerns about a scumbag/liar-Clinton email cache recently discussed in a letter to Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) and wants Judicial Watch to “shake the tree” on this issue...

powerlineblog.com } ~ I didn’t make it to the Minnesota State Fair this year, so I didn’t do my usual report on left-wing seed art. But a friend attended the Fair over the weekend and stopped by the DFL booth... They were selling two pins, of which he bought this one: The Democrats apparently think most voters will find it charming that a group of extreme, freshmen Congresswomen call themselves by a name that is otherwise used exclusively by high school girls. I suspect that belief is delusional, and that most voters have heard more than enough from, and about, “the Squad.” The second button for sale at the DFL booth consisted of a single word in Russian. My friend doesn’t speak Russian, so he had to ask. The word is “traitor” in English. I take it this means the Democrats are still trying to sell(albeit, here, in incomprehensible form the Russia collusion hoax. Once again, I think most voters are not that dumb. While most probably couldn’t recite the details, I think it is common knowledge that President Trump has stood up to Russia, like China, far more than his predecessor. With the collapse of the Mueller investigation, the DOJ Inspector General’s blistering denunciation of scumbag-James Comey, the stilll-to-come IG report on the scumbag/liar-nObama administration’s fraudulent FISA search warrant applications, and what could be a comprehensive account of the genesis of the Russia hoax from U.S. Attorney John Durham, calling President Trump a traitor is looking sillier by the day...  https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/09/democrat-delusion.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+powerlineblog%2Flivefeed+%28Power+Line%29

thenewamerican.com } ~ Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS, just relieved his energy minister, Khalid al-Falih, of his duties concerning the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of his country’s primary asset, ARAMCO (officially, the Saudi Arabian Oil Company)... Plans for that offering, first announced in 2018, were to raise $100 billion for the country’s sovereign wealth fund so it could invest the funds to diversify the economy away from its dependence upon oil revenues and bring it into the 21st century. Plans were delayed for several reasons. First, MBS needed to consolidate his power. Taking control in 2017, he announced a program to fight corruption in the government, leading to the arrest and murder of a number of high-ranking officials while confiscating the wealth of others in exchange for their lives. He also allgedly ordered the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which temporarily tarnished his public persona and delayed further his plans for the IPO. It didn’t help any that U.S. frackers, oblivious to the plans of the crown prince, continued to produce above expectations, putting pressure on world oil prices in the process. Energy Minister al-Falih counseled a wait-and-see approach, urging MBS and the OPEC cartel to cut production further in the hopes that world crude oil prices would rise to at least $80 a barrel. Outside auditors estimate that $80 a barrel is the price the kingdom needs to balance its welfare-state budget. His strategy nearly succeeded. Brent crude oil prices peaked at $85 a barrel briefly last October before plummeting to $50 two months later. Since then, world crude oil prices have languished and curently trade as of Tuesday under $60. The crown prince’s government was running out of money. It had squeezed ARAMCO for a $20 billion special dividend to help close the budget deficit. It sold $12 billion of government bonds for the first time in the country’s history last spring. But the pressure is on and time is running out...  https://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/energy/item/33309-aramco-ipo-plans-pushed-forward-before-oil-prices-drop-further

dailycaller.com } ~ The incoherence of the debate in the public arena becomes especially stark whenever a mass murder ignites the news wires — which is dismayingly often these days... But the understandable wish to make sense of these horrifying acts, and how our society seems to provoke them, leads to walls of mystification, psychobabble, and the dogmas du jour of the activist class. Some maniac guns down twenty people in a shopping mall, the news media lights up for a week of inconclusive hand-wringing, and then the discussion subsides back into uncomfortable, confounded silence, until the next maniac comes onstage to gun down as many total strangers as possible in his desperate bid for catharsis, and we go through the motions again, along with the pitiful ceremony of setting up the candles and teddy-bears at the crime scene. By the way, I say “his” because overwhelmingly these spectacle shooters are men, often but not always young men under twenty-five one recent exception being Tashfeen Malik  who, with her husband Rizwan Farook, shot up a San Bernardino, CA, social services agency in 2015. Something is going desperately wrong with the development of young men in this land. Many of the forces at work are pretty obvious. But what is uniformly overlooked about the current scene is the physical arrangement of daily life on the American landscape, how it affects us in unreckoned ways, and what a tragic fiasco it has become. I refer to the everyday human habitat known as suburbia, the matrix of single-family home subdivisions, arterial highways and freeways, chain stores, junk food dispensaries, and the ubiquitous wilderness of free parking — the last of these implying just one insidious side-effect of this template for living: mandatory motoring. Though a variety of economic interests were served richly by the colossal project of building suburbia, and took full advantage of its perversities, no claque of evil geniuses cooked up the idea in a lab. It was an emergent phenomenon, the coming together of many historical forces, innovations, and opportunities. The emergence of suburbia comports with my New Theory of History, which states that things happen because they seem like a good idea at the time. The trouble is, circumstances change and what at one time seemed like a good idea turns into a debacle of unintended consequences in another time — which is where we are now...

Stormy hearings ahead

powerlineblog.com } ~ Rust never sleeps and neither do congressional Democrats intent on impeaching President Trump... When the House returns to session next week, the House Judiciary Committee will explore five instances of supposed obstruction of justice by Trump that they say are documented in Robert Mueller’s report. None amounts to actual obstruction of justice. Each, by now, is yawn inducing. But House Dems also plan an inquiry that might gain attention and put Judiciary Committee members in the spotlight. Reportedly, they will investigate Trump’s involvement in paying two women to remain silent about allegedly having sex with him. One of the women is ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal. The other is porn star Stormy Daniels. The payments predate Trump’s presidency. Is it a “high crime and misdemeanor” for a candidate to buy the silence of someone who has damaging information about him? I don’t think so. At worst, it’s a technical violation of campaign finance law, and I doubt it even amounts to that. But why let this stand in the way of sexy hearings? Stormy Daniels and the ex-Playboy model might be able to attract media attention and draw viewers to hearings that otherwise hardly anyone would watch. Might their testimony harm Trump’s image? I doubt there’s anyone left in America who thinks Trump is above having sex with attractive women. I also doubt that any potential Trump voter would fail to understand his effort to keep such matters out of the public’s eye during a presidential election campaign. But maybe Trump will take a minor hit if Daniels testifies that her sexual encounter with Trump occurred not long after his wife had given birth...

Preaching Race-Bait Hate

Patrick Hampton:  In my hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, a recent incident involving black suspects and white law-enforcement officers is proving to be yet another case study of how perennial race-baiting agitators wait for any opening to promote themselves.

The opportunities for such self-aggrandizement have been slim lately, but finally, opportunity rang. Two white Hamilton County deputies stopped a vehicle for having unlawfully dark window tinting — which is to say they could not see inside the vehicle — always dangerous to officers making a stop, which is one of the reasons window tinting is regulated. Because the officers could not see the occupants of the vehicle, it would be difficult to make a “racial profiling” case, but crack cocaine was found in the underwear of a black occupant (a favorite place for concealment) and that is the basis for the race hustlers’ complaint.

The usual race-baiters have their panties in a wad, claiming the suspect, who as it turns out has 40 prior arrests, was “strip searched” in public and subjected to a “cavity search,” despite the fact video footage from two camera angles negates those claims. After a meeting of black community faith leaders convened, most pastors declined to participate in this charade. But a small group of the loudest agitators, along with the leader of hater Louis Farrakhan’s local Nation of Islam cadre, are calling for Sheriff Jim Hammond’s resignation.

My friend Mark Alexander, who has a background in law enforcement, has known Jim Hammond for 30 years, and notes, “Jim is a man with an impeccable color-blind career, an ethical and faithful man who is the most professional Sheriff in HCSO’s history — by a measure of magnitude.” But leftists never let facts get in the way of their agenda.

Meanwhile, Chattanooga, like most urban centers Democrat mayors are turning into slums, had one of the bloodiest weekends of 2019. Among the murder victims was a pregnant 19-year-old and mother of a two-½-year-old girl. But the agitators and community are not coming together to find the assailant or demand justice for this young mother; they are on the government steps blasting the officers that have sworn to protect and serve them.

Pastors and ministers are not called to be race-bait hustlers but peacemakers. Peacemakers are not partial and prejudiced. Ironically, the racially biased behavior exhibited by these local “men of faith” is the same behavior they claim they oppose.

Of course, race-baiting hustlers are nothing new.

Writing about such race agitators in his 1911 book, My Larger EducationBooker T. Washington wrote the following words that are even more relevant to present-day race agitators: “There is [a] class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public… Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays.”

Washington continued: “Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs… There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.”

The real tragedy in this unfortunate situation is that young black men are dying at an alarming rate, most murdered by other young black men.

Pastors, where is your concern for the souls of these citizens? Where is the call to repentance? Where is the strategy to build flourishing Christian families? Where is the Good News of the Gospel that gives your community hope? These are valid questions that challenge these race-bait agitators. Instead of fulfilling the Great Commission, these pastors have been indoctrinated with hatred and black tribalism, fomented by today’s Democrat Party and its cadres of social justice warriors who thrive on dividing us by race and every other measure.

Truth is, the great majority of Hamilton County citizens support our law enforcement, as do real pastors doing the real work of the cross. We will not stand idly by while radical Islamists and agitators sow racial discord in our community. We have worked too hard and too long to build a peaceful city.

As Washington wrote, “Great men cultivate love. … Only little men cherish a spirit of hatred.”  ~The Patriot Post
