{washingtonexaminer.com} ~ The Trump administration on Monday announced sanctions against Venezuela's state-run oil monopoly, PDVSA, in a move to kill the main source of revenue for the regime of Nicolas Maduro... and empower opposition leader Juan Guaido. The sanctions divert the proceeds of U.S. purchases of Venezuelan oil to a blocked account, preventing the regime of Maduro from receiving it. National security adviser John Bolton said the move would block $7 billion in assets of Venezuela's state-run oil company, which he said has "long been a vehicle of embezzlement and corruption.""We have continued to expose the corruption of the Maduro regime and its cronies and today's action ensures they can no longer loot the assets of the Venezuelan people," Bolton said at a White House press briefing. The sanctions stop short of a total embargo on Venezuelan oil. But energy industry experts say the impact could be the same, because Maduro would likely not allow oil to be sold to U.S. refiners if he can't use the revenues and would turn to alternative buyers, such as Russia and China. “It is the same as an import ban for refiners,” Joseph McMonigle, a former chief of staff at the Energy Department in the George W. Bush administration, recently told the Washington Examiner...Expect the price of gas to go up in the coming weeks.
The Only Cure for Media Malpractice

{spectator.org} ~ There has been much wailing and rending of garments over the weekend about the layoffs of some writers, editors, and other staff at BuzzFeed, HuffPost, Yahoo, AOL, and Gannett... Naturally, the affected employees are upset and inclined to blame malign forces beyond their control. Predictably, the primary villain to emerge is President Trump, who had the temerity to tweet that the real problem is the market: “Fake News and bad journalism have caused a big downturn. Sadly, many others will follow. The people want the Truth!” This is not what these unhappy folks want to hear, but Trump is right. Trump understands what many journalists refuse to acknowledge — the news business is a business — and the customers are dissatisfied. According to Gallup, the public now has less confidence in the news media than in banks, big business, organized religion, the medical system, the military, public schools, the presidency, the police, etc. This is true for all news sources, including television, newspapers, and the internet. Moreover, because the erosion of public confidence in the media has been a consistent, decades-long process, it cannot credibly be blamed on “attacks” by President Trump. The erosion became noticeable during the scumbag/liar-Clinton era and it has continued unabated until the present. In 1993, for example, 46 percent of Americans had a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in television news. By 2018 that figure had declined to 20 percent. During the same period of time, public trust in newspapers dropped to 23 percent. Internet news has never enjoyed high levels of public confidence, yet even its credibility has declined to 16 percent. So why are the customers unhappy with what the media are selling? Andrew Sullivan, of all people, uses the Covington Catholic story to spell it out: How did this grotesque inversion of the truth become the central narrative for what seemed to be the entire class of elite journalists on Twitter? That’s the somewhat terrifying question.… Across most of the national media, led by the New York Times  and the Washington Post, the narrative had been set.… There’s a reason why, in the crucial battle for the legitimacy of a free press, Trump is still on the offensive. Our mainstream press has been poisoned by tribalism. My own trust in it is eroding. I’m far from the only one...  https://spectator.org/the-only-cure-for-media-malpractice/?utm_source=American+Spectator+Emails&utm_campaign=3a28593544-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_28_11_09&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_797a38d487-3a28593544-104608113

Pulosi is Still Refusing to Let Trump
to Deliver State of the Union

{thepoliticalinsider.com} ~ During the longest government shutdown in history, which ended temporarily on Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pulosi said the shutdown would prevent President Trump from delivering the State of the Union address... which traditionally takes place in the U.S. House of Representatives. The State of the Union address is scheduled to happen Tuesday. Now that the shutdown is over, does Pulosi plan on inviting the President to give his speech in the body of government she controls? After all, security concerns are off the table with government employees getting paid again. That would be a big, fat NO. The Daily Caller’s Saagar Enjeti tweeted Monday, “WH strategic communications director @mercedesschlapp says on @FoxNews that as of right now no invitation from Pulosi to @POTUS for the State of the Union has been issued yet.”...  https://thepoliticalinsider.com/pelosi-state-union/?utm_campaign=TPI_Afternoon_Newsletter_1_28_2019&utm_source=criticalimpact&utm_medium=email&utm_content=4b4ea4948726422aa6473c7b9fa19141&source=CI

The Deep Hypocrisy of Pulosi, scumbag-Schumer

{barbwire.com} ~ Media is using sound bites and other optics made to look like a new, although un-elected, president and vice president have somehow emerged on the political scene... Speaker Pulosi and scumbag-Schumer are wallowing in the deepest hypocrisy seen in decades. Citizens are dying at the hands of illegal immigrants and 800,000 federal workers are without pay, all the while the pair continues a waltz around Washington with sullen faces and hard rhetoric trying to mask their deep hatred for President Trump. Democrats waste no time when strides are made to correct what is wrong with our nation. Just after one of the most successful and meaningful marches for life, Gov. evil-Cuomo of New York, standing next to scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton at Barnard College, announces that he will hold the budget of New York hostage unless they pass a law that allows abortions for any reason all the way to the day of birth...

{patriotnewsalerts.com} ~ Prior to the agreement reached Friday between Congress and President Donald Trump for a three-week spending deal that has temporarily re-opened the government... there were growing rumblings of dissension among the rank-and-file of both Democrats and Republicans. But being the liberal-biased media outlet it is, Newsweek ignored the Democratic dissension and only reported early on Friday that some Republican senators had turned on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the White House over the then-lengthy and stalemated shutdown. Things reportedly got a bit heated during a private Republican luncheon on Thursday, with some senators turning on McConnell and Vice President Mike Pence for their steadfastness in support of the president’s position on the shutdown over border security funding. In fact, it was reported that Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson pointed to McConnell and declared: “This is your fault,” ostensibly in reference to McConnell’s refusal to bring to a vote any of several Democratic House-passed spending bills that Trump had already said he would veto if submitted for his signature... Come on Republicans lets get together.

by Thomas Gallatin:  Is the end of the U.S.‘s nearly two-decades-long war in Afghanistan finally in sight? The New York Times reported this morning that a draft framework for a peace deal between the U.S. and the Taliban had been agreed to in principle. “We have a draft of the framework that has to be fleshed out before it becomes an agreement,” stated Zalmay Khalilzad, the American envoy. He added, “The Taliban have committed, to our satisfaction, to do what is necessary that would prevent Afghanistan from ever becoming a platform for international terrorist groups or individuals.”

Since 2010, the U.S. and the Taliban have been attempting to broker a peace deal that would effectively allow for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. This latest news represents a significant step forward in seeing that goal realized — on the basis of conditions on the ground, not Barack scumbag/liar-nObama’s electoral timetable. However, it’s far from a done deal. As Afghan President Ashraf Ghani noted, “We want peace … soon, but we want it with prudence. Prudence is important so we do not repeat past mistakes.”

The Taliban has in principle agreed to never allow Afghanistan to become “a platform for international terrorist groups or individuals,” like al-Qaida. We’ll believe it when we see it. The second U.S. demand, which Taliban leadership is still considering, is to enter into a cease-fire agreement with the Afghan government. The U.S. has made it clear that American troops will not withdraw without a cease-fire. That the Taliban is even considering this is significant given that it has long refused to engage in any talks with the Afghan government.

There is no timeframe set for a potential withdrawal of U.S. troops — and there shouldn’t be — but there may be a light appearing at the end of this long Afghan tunnel. The important issue for Americans is to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a threat to the U.S. again. Unfortunately for the people of Afghanistan, the threat posed by the Taliban continues.  ~The Patriot Post
