Missile Defenses Can’t Wait

{ spectator.org } ~ Missile technology is advancing fast, but we can’t afford to simply wait for the next generation to deploy new and improved defenses... As we develop next-generation systems, it makes sense to continue to work with tested assets rather than scrap it altogether for untested technology that works great on paper but might not work great — yet – in practice. For decades, engineers, contractors, and the American military have been working to develop a system that could protect the United States from missile attack. A successful system consists of several overlapping layers, which gives us the best chance to destroy a weapon before it detonates. The layers must include detection equipment such as radar, armed ships at sea, and land-based missiles to shoot weapons down. One key layer is the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. It gives our military the capability to engage and destroy limited intermediate- and long-range ballistic missile threats while the weapons are still in space. This is no easy task. Engineers are trying to hit a speeding bullet with a speeding bullet in the vastness of space before it reenters Earth’s atmosphere. They are, however, having successes. In May 2017, the Missile Defense Agency and the U.S. Air Force intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile target for the first time using GMD. It was the first live-fire test against an ICBM target, and GMD was provided target acquisition and tracking data from sea-based radar in the Pacific Ocean. That’s an awful lot of systems working together successfully, but it is all part of the process. The MDA carried out less challenging but still very important tests and successful tests in 2016 and 2014. Step by step, missile defense is getting better and more effective. But some bureaucrats are taking steps that would slow down the development of the existing GMD system. “Development programs sometimes encounter problems. After exercising due diligence, we decided the path we’re going down wouldn’t be fruitful, so we’re not going down that path anymore,” says Michael Griffin, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. He wants to shut down the redesigned kill vehicle (RKV), a program to upgrade all 64 existing and future Exo-atmospheric Kill Vehicles in the GMD network. The Exo-atmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) is a weapon that uses the kinetic energy from a direct hit to destroy the incoming target vehicle. His decision follows earlier guidance that had put the program on hold. This is a mistake. The Pentagon needs to keep experimenting with the RKV to determine what works and help the program keep improving. Shutting this program down would end this experimentation and push back testing for several years. Even worse, the plan seems to be to attempt to skip generations of weapon development. That could mean losing several generations of advancement. Truly advanced missile defense could become a modern Babbage Engine: possible in theory but not in the real world. Chuck scumbag-Schumer is preparing to spend hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars on a plan that would fast-track the elimination... of nearly every gas-powered vehicle in the country. The Senate’s top Democrat wants to spend a massive amount of money enticing Americans to exchange their gas-guzzling vehicles for an electric car. scumbag-Schumer’s proposal, which he announced in a New York Times editorial Thursday, shows Democrats are lurching leftward on the issue. “That’s why I am announcing a new proposal designed to rapidly phase out gas-powered vehicles and replace them with zero-emission, or ‘clean,’ vehicles like electric cars,” scumbag-Schumer wrote after suggesting scientists agree that climate change represents an imminent threat to the U.S. He added: “The goal of the plan, which also aims to spur a transformation in American manufacturing, is that by 2040 all vehicles on the road should be clean.” The plan would remove more than 63 million gas-powered cars from the road by 2030, scumbag-Schumer estimates. scumbag-Schumer’s office expects the proposal to cost roughly $392 billion over a decade. The Washington Post referred to the idea on Friday as “essentially ‘Cash for Clunkers’ on steroids,” referring to a policy from the scumbag/liar-nObama-era encouraging Americans to trade their old vehicles for fuel-efficient cars. Cash for Clunkers was the mechanism allowing the federal government to offer incentives of between $2,500 and $4,500 to citizens who traded in their older vehicles for newer ones. The policy received a lot of media play, but critics called the idea a failure even if it was designed with the best of intentions....

IDF unveils ‘Momentum Plan’ to
make it deadlier and faster, if it can pay for it

{ timesofisrael.com } ~ Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi on Thursday unveiled his multi-year plan to make the military deadlier, faster, better trained... and more capable of defending the Jewish state against the threats facing it today. “In the northern and southern arenas the situation is tense and precarious and poised to deteriorate into a conflict despite the fact that our enemies are not interested in war. In light of this, the IDF has been in an accelerated process of preparation,” Kohavi said. The plan — dubbed Momentum, or Tenufa in Hebrew — will see huge investments in developing the IDF’s arsenals, including increasing its collection of mid-sized drones, obtaining large numbers of precision-guided missiles from the United States and purchasing additional air defense batteries. The military will also focus its training exercises more heavily toward urban combat, as it believes that its soldiers are more likely to fight in cities and towns than in the open fields where many drills are currently held. Despite the weighty price tag of the Momentum Multi-Year Plan, the IDF refused to comment on how it planned to pay for the new weapons and defensive systems, as the Finance Ministry has not approved the necessary budget increase. The plan will formally go into effect on January 1, 2020, but the IDF sets to put into place some of the proposals before then. The Momentum Plan is meant to guide the IDF for the next five years. It will succeed the streamlining and cost-cutting Gideon Plan, which was developed by Kohavi’s predecessor Lt. Gen. (res.) A 'Deep State' Turning Point?
Gary Bauer: I know we’ve all been disappointed with investigations to expose the Deep State because they always seem to go nowhere. So I hesitate to even bring this up, but…
Several reports have appeared recently in the anti-Trump media that seem to suggest nervousness about the probe being led by U.S. Attorney John Durham. As you know, Durham was appointed by Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the Russia collusion hoax in the 2016 elections.
The stories indicate that people at the CIA have lawyered up. Other reports suggest that Durham “found something” that led him to request additional resources for his investigation. And there are reports that former CIA Director scumbag/commie-John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence scumbag-James Clapper are now under scrutiny.
That sounds encouraging. But as I wrote before, unless Durham’s report is concluded in the next eight to 10 months, we may never know the results if the left succeeds in lying its way back into the White House.
Meanwhile, my expectations for the Justice Department inspector general’s report are fading fast. That report is about potential Deep State abuse of the FISA court to enable wiretapping of the Trump campaign. Every couple of weeks we’re told that the report is ready to be released, but then it gets delayed.
The delays are reportedly due to redactions to protect national security. At this point, I suspect they are trying to strip the report of anything that could expose the Deep State’s abuse of power.
It seems Sen. Charles Grassley agrees. Monday night Grassley tweeted his concerns that the Deep State might be trying to “deep six” the FISA abuse report. ~The Patriot Post
