Trump Has an Iran Strategy. This Is It.

{ nytimes.com } ~ President Trump’s strategy to confront Iran is easy to understand: impose maximum pressure to gain maximum leverage ahead of negotiations... to dismantle its nuclear program and address its malign activities — all while avoiding a military entanglement or pursuing a policy of regime change. Iran’s leaders, for their part, recognize that Mr. Trump’s strategy has already sent their economy into a tailspin and could bring down their regime if sanctions are not soon lifted. The recent regime-perpetrated murder of about 1,500 Iranian protesters demonstrating against the government’s austerity policy revealed a destabilized Islamic Republic increasingly afraid of its repressed citizens. The Iranian regime doesn’t need to trust America or Mr. Trump to strike a deal; it just needs to act as a rational actor to avoid collapse. Unlike the 2015 Iran deal, which was a fragile nonbinding political agreement subject to the ebb and flow of American politics, Trump could offer to submit a binding treaty to the Senate for ratification. Tehran’s conventional options are limited because it cannot win a direct military confrontation with the United States. So instead the regime pursues headline-grabbing provocations to foment political debate in open democracies — in Europe and the United States — while avoiding direct military retaliation. The list of Iranian provocations over the past year includes the downing of an American drone, mine attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and a cruise missile strike on Saudi oil facilities. On the nuclear front, Iran’s slow but steady effort to shrink its breakout timeline raises alarm bells in Western capitals without provoking an American or Israeli military strike on its nuclear facilities. Each of these escalation points appear designed to bait Mr. Trump into reinforcing the false narrative that there are only two choices when it comes to Iran: war, or a return to the flawed 2015 nuclear deal. If Iran could make war seem imminent, so the thought goes, it might indirectly force Mr. Trump into relieving sanctions assuring the regime’s survival, perhaps even without entering direct negotiations. To his credit, President Trump recognized those traps for what they were and exercised strategic patience. Indeed, Mr. Trump could have responded to each provocation with a proportional military response. Left-wing CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin claimed scumbag/liar-Schiff was “dazzling” and turned in the “second best courtroom performance” Toobin ever witnessed. “I thought it was dazzling,” Toobin gushed. “I thought the way he wove through both the facts of the case and the historical context was really remarkable. It was the second-best courtroom address — since it’s like a courtroom, that I ever heard.” Toobin went on to praise the partisan and flimsy case scumbag/liar-Schiff presented as airtight and overwhelming. “When you consider the volume of information he covered using the video . . . the witness testimony, the documents, it’s very persuasive stuff. And, you know, if people are listening, it’s very hard to imagine that they will think that the Democrats and the House managers are just making this up,” Toobin continued. { meforum.org } ~ Israel unveiled its second F-35i squadron to coincide with the new year at its Nevatim Airbase where its F-35s are based. This is a milestone for Israel which received its first F-35s in 2016 and declared its first squadron operation in December 2017... Israel's F-35i is a modified version with unique features. Israel is expected to acquire at least 50 of the Lockheed Martin jets amid rising tension with Iran. It fulfills Israel's desire to have a qualitative military edge over adversaries throughout the Middle East. The F-35i has been kept under wraps and extreme security by Israel, however, the country has been slowly illustrating the plane's effectiveness. In photos shown in May 2018 the F-35 was pictured flying over Beirut. At the same time, the plane was said to have carried out its first combat sorties from Israel. Also, Israel recently hosted its Blue Flag exercise where its F-35s flew alongside Italian F-35s and US warplanes. Israel has said that its Air Force has carried out more than 1,000 airstrikes in Syria against Iranian targets over the last years and Israel has also hinted that it has struck Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. The second squadron for Israel was announced in a ceremony Thursday, January 16 in a ceremony with Air Force Commander Major General Amikam Norkin. The squadron will be labeled the 116th Squadron Lions of the South, alongside the first F-35i squadron dubbed Golden Eagle. The 116th Squadron has previously used F-16s and other planes going back more than 60 years. to Paralyze Iran’s Petroleum Industry

In an announcement by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the administration decided to take measures against the four international companies that have transferred hundreds of millions of dollars of exports from the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). NIOC played an instrumental role in Iran’s terrorism activities as it funds the country’s militia known as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF). In a statement, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that “Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical industries are major sources of revenue for the Iranian regime and funds its malign activities throughout the Middle East. The entities targeted today facilitate Iran’s petrochemical and petroleum exports in contravention of U.S. economic sanctions.” Mnuchin added, “Iran’s petrochemical and petroleum sectors are primary sources of funding for the Iranian regime’s global terrorist activities and enable its persistent use of violence against its own people.” By imposing the sanction, the Treasury Department expects that all corporations and businesses tied to these properties will be blocked from U.S. borders, as well as deny any American citizen to engage in any transactions between these corporations. of Millions to Islamist Organizations
