Multi-Million Dollar Business Deals

{ freebeacon.com } ~ A group of U.S.-based companies inked several multi-million dollar deals with Senegal on Sunday, a move meant to promote American values in the developing world... Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in the first leg of a 10-day trip through Africa and the Middle East, oversaw the signing of several agreements that will see U.S. companies partner with the Senegalese government to build critical infrastructure projects. Pompeo's stops in Africa are meant to pushback against mounting criticism that the Trump administration is backing away from the global stage and focusing inward on America domestically. In a major foreign policy speech on Saturday in Munich, Germany, Pompeo argued that the Trump administration's criticism of historical alliances such as NATO is not part of a foreign policy that seeks to limit America's role in the world. In Africa, Pompeo is looking to promote American business interests and push back against economic gains made by nations such as China, which has invested heavily in the developing world. "The private sectors drive economic growth and value for the United States," Pompeo said ahead of the signing in Dakar of five new economic partnerships. "They're important because not only will they deliver value here in Senegal, it will be good for these American global companies" and benefits workers in both countries. Transits Taiwan Strait

{ news.usni.org } ~ Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) transited the Taiwan Strait on Saturday... Chancellorsville’s transit through the 110-mile wide body of water separating Taiwan from mainland China is the second such transit in a month. On January 16, USS Shiloh (CG-67) made a similar trip. Chancellorsville made a similar transit in November, according to the ship’s Facebook page. “The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit February 15 local time in accordance with international law. The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,” said Lt. Joe Keiley, a spokesperson for U.S. 7th Fleet, in an email to USNI News. The Chinese government generally disapproves of such transits, often issuing statements urging the U.S. not to take what it would consider provocative moves in the region. However, China opted to sail its newest aircraft carrier Shandong through the Taiwan Strait two weeks ahead of Taiwan’s presidential election. At the time, President Tsai Ing-wen, of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, was vying for re-election. She was subsequently elected to another term. The U.S. maintains a complicated relationship with Taiwan. Officially U.S. policy does not support Taiwan becoming an independent nation, but the U.S. government maintains strong “unofficial relations” with Taiwan, according to the State Department. The U.S. has “recognized the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, acknowledging the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China” since 1979, according to the U.S. State Department. Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said, “In recent weeks, we brought enormous news for the State of Israel and the Land of Israel. My friend President Trump clearly stated that he would recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley, the northern Dead Sea, and all Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, as well as a broad area encompassing them.” “We have formed an Israeli team to work with the American team on the work of mapping, which has already begun — it is underway,” Netanyahu announced. The team, he said, includes Minister of Tourism and Aliyah and Integration Yariv Levin, National Security Council chief Meir Ben-Shabbat, and the Prime Minister’s Office Director-General Ronen Peretz, with assistance from the Israeli Ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer. “This team will work closely with settlement and, of course, security officials in order to complete the work quickly,” Netanyahu said. “For their part, the Americans will work with us,” he added. “We will complete the work as quickly as possible.” “We are turning parts of the homeland in Judea and Samaria into part of the State of Israel forever,” the prime minister declared. Spain: European Court Approves Summary Deportations of Illegal Migrants

{ gatestoneinstitute.org } ~ In a landmark decision that will have potentially seismic implications for immigration policy in Europe, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that Spain acted lawfully... when it summarily deported two migrants who illegally tried to enter Spanish territory. The Strasbourg-based court — which has jurisdiction over 47 European countries, and whose rulings are binding on all 27 member states of the European Union — ruled that in order for migrants to benefit from certain human rights protections, such as access to lawyers, interpreters and the right to remain in Europe, they must first enter European territory in a legal, as opposed to an illegal, manner. The ruling, which effectively authorizes European governments summarily to deport illegal migrants immediately at the border, transfers some decision-making powers on immigration back to European nation states. The ruling is being viewed as a major victory for those who believe that sovereign nation states have the right to decide who is and is not allowed to enter their territory. The Spanish case dates back to August 2014, when hundreds of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa stormed the border fence at Melilla, a Spanish exclave in North Africa. After spending several hours perched on top of the fence, two men, one from Ivory Coast and the other from Mali, climbed down and were handcuffed by Spanish border police, who handed them over to Moroccan authorities. The two Africans said they were never given a chance to explain their personal circumstances or receive help from lawyers or interpreters. In February 2015, with the help of human rights lawyers, the pair took their case to the ECHR....
