{aim.org} ~ When America’s most powerful media outlets demonstrated their understanding of participatory democracy by actually participating in the 2016 presidential election campaign, it backfired on them, big time... For example, when President Trump came to the CIA and received the type of ovation he usually gets at rallies of his supporters, his appearance blew away yet another media narrative several weeks in the making about his alleged war on the intelligence community. “It was clear to any objective observer with a set of eyes and ears that Trump’s speech at CIA headquarters was a tremendous success. He was interrupted by applause 11 times,” Cliff Kincaid, Director of the Accuracy in Media Center for Investigative Journalism, pointed out. Cliff counted, because he can, unlike many of the “best and the brightest” in the media, as we shall see. At this point, the only relatively reliable news that America’s so-called mainstream media offer are sports, weather and traffic reports. Even then you may want to get a second opinion. There is bias by commission and bias by omission. He brought up Russia and absolutely destroyed liar-Hillary Clinton. “We had liar-Hillary Clinton give Russia 20 percent of the uranium in our country,” Trump said during a Thursday’s press conference. “You know what uranium is, right? It’s a thing called nuclear weapons and other things. They play a clip which features a few instances of President Trump having a heart to heart talk with members of the media. Judge Jeanine says, “I think Donald Trump got up yesterday morning and said, ‘I’ve had it, I’ve had it with this fake news hogwash, I’ve had it with my people spending time going out there and trying to rebut what they’re saying. I’m going to go out there myself, I’m going to talk to the people, I’m going to answer every question, I’m done with this. And then we’re going back to work. We’re going back, we’re going to talk to the people. Tillerson Ousts Top Level Swamp Creatures
In State Dept Purge Of Insurgents

{rickwells.us} ~ The State Department is sometimes referred to as “foggy bottom” because their offices were built in what used to be a swampy and foggy area of Washington DC... It’s poetic justice that the draining of the swamp should being there, in one of the most corruption-plagued and compromised agencies of the federal government. The leaks, corruption, and obstructionism that have been a key component of State Department operations for decades and which were certainly an ingrained portion of their operation under both liar-Hillary Clinton and John hanoi-Kerry, along with countless other violations of laws, regulations and procedures, just came to a screeching halt. Openness, compliance with the law and subservience to the White House and the Constitution are now going to be the order of the day. Apparently the level of defiant conduct was such that there was little choice, particularly in view of the 1,000 signatures that were attached to a letter of opposition to the executive order banning travel from terrorist nations into the US. {lidblog.com} ~ It would be easy to think the Washington Post just has the right combination of generic traits, and that’s why they’ve been the ones pumping out all the (laughable) themage from anonymous intelligence officials about Mike Flynn... phone calls, Russia, Trump, investigations, suspicion, chaos, fear, loathing, and yada yada yada. Traits like reporter relationships with intelligence community personalities, right? You could buy that. Everyone’s there in the D.C. area, sitting on the same lunch stools. Running on the same tree-lined paths. Doing all that thriller-movie stuff on the leafy banks of the Potomac. But, hey, it’s the Washington Post. Woodward and Bernstein. Ben Bradlee. Katharine Graham. So, OK, that was more than 40 years ago. There's a new Great Divider of society

{jewishworldreview.com} ~ Pop culture once offered a needed respite from politics and the expression of personal opinion that becomes public invective. It was easy to escape into music and movies to pursue pleasure beyond the reach of "the real world."
Few pop stars, no matter the revolutionary roles they took on stage and screen, imagined they were called to intrude into the private space of those who paid them custom and accorded them celebrity. Performing rarely gave way to preaching.
Fans demanded perfection in the real person behind the characters on stage and screen. Hollywood studios once kept full-time media fixers on staff to protect the imaginary, but effective, persona of a star's public image. We might have guessed that Jimmy Stewart was a Republican, or that Elizabeth Taylor voted Democratic, but nobody knew for sure.
The public image was bigger than life, and largely mythic. Both star and fan wanted it that way. Such a system was one part gossamer and two parts cotton candy, bound to wither and melt. And so it did. Politics and show biz blurred in different ways.
During World War II, when patriotism flourished from sea to shining sea, many stars famously took up the nation's colors, and many of those who didn't, or couldn't, went off to entertain the troops. Bob Hope and his fun under fire became an institution, usually barely behind the front lines. Al Jolson was a blast from the past, earning new celebrity, and literally worked himself to death in the Korean War. Pride in country flourished everywhere.
By the early '50s, with the Cold War changing everything, pride turned to paranoia. Hollywood stars became victims of McCarthy hysteria. Popular performers were accused of being card-carrying Communists. Some were, many were not. A blacklist grew. Reputations of innocent men and women were ruined by smear. Hysteria eventually passed, Hollywood regained its footing, and politicians and performers swam together in the mix of glamour, money and mutual celebrity.
Frank Sinatra, once a close pal of John F. Kennedy, was abruptly exiled from his company when the president's brother Bobby thought Sinatra's mob connections made him not worth the risk to JFK's reputation. Ol' Blue Eyes was enraged, became a Republican, and campaigned for Ronald Reagan.
Friendships blossomed with guilt by association, and neither party partisanship nor ideology colored all of show biz red or blue. Alas, that was then, and this is now. Ideology and the digital devices of social media quickly turn voices, which in another era would have been sotte voce in cocktail party conversations, into screeds and rants on Twitter and Facebook.
Meryl Streep, the last authentic movie star whose brilliant portrayals of characters whose political points of view she would no doubt shun, made her a superstar. But even she can't resist the raw thrill of shrill partisanship, playing to Hollywood fashion with denunciations of President Trump at the Golden Globes gala and in a speech to the Human Rights Campaign in behalf of LGBTQ rights.
She went off-script to describe herself as a target of "brownshirts and 'bots and worse," sending new generations of fans to Google to find out what she was talking about. The president, as usual, couldn't resist making it a spectacle in a crossfire of hostile tweets.
With the Academy Awards gala coming up, some of the aspiring winners are crafting provocative political harangues to further coarsen the popular culture. It's not just the pop culture. Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein calls the political divide the result of "partyism," which he describes as a visceral dislike of anyone of the opposing party. In his new book, "#republic: Divided Democracy in the age of Social Media," he says "partyism" is not as bad as racism, but by certain measures it exceeds racism in poisoning the national conversation.
"In 1960," he writes, citing public-opinion polls, "just 5 percent of Republicans and 4 percent of Democrats said they would feel 'displeased' if their child married outside their political party. By 2010 those numbers had reached 49 and 33 percent, respectively - far higher than the percentage of parents who would be 'displeased' if their child married someone with a different skin color."
Somewhere in Hollywood someone is even now plotting to update and remake the movie, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," revising the story of a daughter who brings home a black fiance to meet her white liberal parents, to the story of the daughter of "progressive" parents who brings home a beau in a cap emblazoned "Make America Great Again." The test of tolerance for our enlightened time or not, canoodling with your sweetie on a soft rainy night to the strains of Sinatra, strings and brass was more fun.
