townhall.com } ~ If the left is so loving, tolerant and inclusive, why is it so driven by unquenchable bitterness? What fuels it to divide Americans?... No, I'm not talking about the Democratic presidential candidates, though any one of them demonstrates the same theme. The American left is just gorged with angst and apparently on a mission to share its misery. The insanity emanating from leftists today is overwhelming. It used to be that when you came across an outrageous story in the news, you just shook your head and thought, "This is weird." But you found solace in realizing it was not representative of the societal norm. Sadly, that's not true anymore. The left has made great strides in normalizing insanity. It's as if each day's news is an orchestrated clinic on how to make society sound crazier today than it was yesterday -- and it was way crazy yesterday. Let me give you a typical example. NPR reported that MSNBC's Rachel Maddow was at Rockefeller University a few years ago to present a prize to a prominent female scientist. Upon entering the auditorium, someone heard her say, "What is up with the dude wall?" One side wall was covered with portraits of award-winning scientists from the university, and Maddow was distressed that they were all men. Maddow was not alone. "One hundred percent of them are men," said Leslie Vosshall, a neurobiologist with the university. "It's probably 30 headshots of 30 men. So it's imposing." Her word choice is instructive. Vosshall explained that Maddow's comment made her realize that for years, she had been uneasy about seeing rooms and hallways at scientific institutions adorned with portraits of white men. "It just sends the message, every day when you walk by it, that science consists of old white men," she said. "I think every institution needs to go out into the hallway and ask, 'What kind of message are we sending with these oil portraits and dusty old photographs?'" Let me stop here and ask you: If you were to see photos or portraits of distinguished men in a university setting, would you feel like the university was sending you a message? Would it strike you as "imposing"? Would you view it through a gender or race prism?... No it won't.

theblaze.com } ~ A personal assistant to President Donald Trump reportedly resigned abruptly on Thursday for divulging information to the media... Madeleine Westerhout, director of Oval Office operations, met with reporters in New Jersey for an off-the-record dinner while the president was on vacation. Westerhout reportedly shared information with the reporters about the Trump family and other affairs in the White House. The Times said that the administration has labeled Westerhout a "separated employee" and will not allow her back into the White House. Westerhout was born in California and worked previously as an intern on the 2012 presidential campaign for rino-Mitt Romney. Some  questioned her loyalty to the president after a recent book about the White House reported that she cried in anguish in 2016 when the election results rolled in. In 2016, she worked as a "greeter girl" for visitors to the Trump Tower during the transition period after the election...

From Latin America to West Africa, Hezbollah’s complex web of connections is fuelling

fdd.org } ~ When Paraguay announced it was designating Hezbollah as an international terrorist organisation last week, it created a new legal basis to take action against the Lebanese group’s money laundering and terror-financing activities... These fundraising operations criss-cross the globe, from Latin America and the US to West Africa. Hezbollah exploits existing smuggling routes and links to cartels and relies on large family networks to boost its coffers, without having to develop a criminal infrastructure. Latin America is just starting to wake up to the threat. With Hezbollah’s proscription, Asuncion can help reduce the group’s pervasive and destabilising influence, across Latin America. The fight against Hezbollah needs to be global and Latin America, where much of the group’s illicit activities are concentrated, is a good place to start. Until recently, Latin American governments were unwilling to label Hezbollah a terrorist organisation. Last month, however, Argentina took the unprecedented step of doing so, noting Hezbollah’s responsibility for terror attacks against an Israeli embassy and a Jewish community centre on Argentinian soil in 1992 and 1994 respectively. The designations followed Argentina’s creation of a public registry for terror entities and individuals. Argentina’s actions clearly influenced Paraguay, its neighbour to the north, whose government previously refused to acknowledge the obvious. In January, Paraguay’s then foreign minister Luis Castiglioni publicly denied that Hezbollah had engaged in illicit finance activities in the country. Paraguay’s director of the National Intelligence Secretariat Esteban Aquino Bernal echoed his claim, suggesting that the main challenge for financial authorities was not money laundering but tax evasion. Interior minister Juan Ernesto Villamayor also downplayed the issue. Even the Supreme Court’s then president Victor Manuel Nunez Rodriguez weighed in, saying he had no evidence Hezbollah was financing terrorism... They are so wrong and will pay for being wrong.

Trump: US to keep 8,600 troops

thehill.com } ~ President Trump said Thursday he will reduce the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to 8,600 but the U.S. will maintain a presence after a deal with the Taliban is reached in the 18-year war... “We’re going down to 8,600, and then we’ll make a determination from there as to what happens,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News radio. Trump stressed the need for a residual presence to prevent an attack on the United States, adding that if such an attack were to happen “we would come back with a force like they’ve seen never before." "Oh yeah, you have to keep a presence," Trump said. "We're going to keep a presence there. We're reducing that presence very substantially, and we're going to always have a presence. We're going to have high intelligence." Trump’s envoy for Afghan peace talks, Zalmay Khalilzad, is in Qatar seeking to put the finishing touches on a deal with the Taliban in the ninth round of talks. The Taliban said Wednesday that a deal was close. The broad outlines of the deal would see U.S. troops withdraw in exchange for Taliban assurances that Afghanistan will not be used as a launch point for terrorist attacks against the United States. The sticking point has been the Taliban’s refusal to engage in talks with the Afghan government, a key U.S. demand. The Taliban considers the U.S.-backed government illegitimate. A drawdown to 8,600 troops would put U.S. troop levels at a couple hundred more than they were when Trump first took office. Right now, the official count of U.S. troops in Afghanistan is 14,000...

wnd.com } ~ The United States should bring in the United Nations to handle the border crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border... asserts Rep. worthless-Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. "We should do what any other country does by dealing with this situation in a serious way," worthless-Omar told her constituents Tuesday during an immigration forum in south Minneapolis. "So, we have to bring in the United Nations high commissioner on refugees, an agency that has the expertise and the training to handle massive flows of refugees humanely," she said, according to the Daily Wire. worthless-Omar was the target of a complaint filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission accusing her of illegally using campaign funds to pay for travel expenses for the Democratic political consultant whose wife accuses him of having an extramarital affair with the Muslim congresswoman. Nevertheless, the Daily Wire reported, she lectured the Minneapolis audience about losing the "moral high ground" on immigration. worthless-Omar also charged, without evidence, that the federal government was arresting and deporting illegal aliens because they were poor. In February, worthless-Omar called for the elimination of the Department of Homeland Security. "When Democrats stood our ground last month, we proved that Individual does not have the public support to ram his hateful wall through Congress," worthless-Omar tweeted. "Let's stand firm: #Not1Dollar for DHS." In July, Rep. commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said in an interview she also would like to get rid of DHS. 'Congress has let it happen'...

Thomas Gallatin:  Cranky commie-Bernie Sanders lost himself at least one vote after he and his campaign team stopped at a famous California restaurant in San Francisco for dinner. John Konstin, the owner of John’s Grill — which opened back in 1908 and was famously used as a backdrop of the 1941 movie “The Maltese Falcon” — was none too impressed with the socialist Democratic presidential candidate, stating, “It was all very nice, except for cranky commie-Bernie. He was just rude, not friendly. I think he was hungry and just didn’t want to be a politician. He lost my vote.”

Contrast commie-Sanders’s behavior to that of President Donald Trump, who has been described as warm, friendly, and engaging on the campaign trail. As The Atlantic reported back in 2016: “The 70-year-old Republican nominee took his time walking from the green room toward the stage. He stopped to chat with the waiters, service workers, police officers, and other convention staffers facilitating the event. There were no selfies, no glad-handing for votes, no trailing television cameras. Out of view of the press, Trump warmly greets everyone he sees, asks how they are, and, when he can, asks for their names and what they do.”

Perhaps commie-Sanders’s crankiness and rudeness toward the peasantry can be explained by his longtime affinity for totalitarian regimes — which should give every Liberty-loving American serious pause. The man who honeymooned in the Soviet Union is now crediting China’s communist regime for pulling millions of Chinese out of poverty. In a recent interview, commie-Sanders asserted, “China is a country that is moving, unfortunately, in a more authoritarian way in a number of directions. But what we have to say about China, in fairness to China and it’s leadership, is, if I’m not mistaken, they have made more progress in addressing extreme poverty than any country in the history of civilization, so they’ve done a lot of things for their people.”

What commie-Sanders failed to mention was what China did to lift millions of people out of poverty. The reality is that, in 1979, Beijing abandoned socialist economic controls and started to embrace capitalism, which, distorted though it was, quickly ignited a massive economic turnaround — leading to a rapid reduction in the nation’s poverty rate. Ironically, commie-Sanders’s mention of China’s pulling people out of poverty undercuts his own claims that socialism is the way to greater prosperity and economic freedom.

Finally, it’s worth pointing out what commie-Sanders conveniently ignores — Chinese communist dictator Mao Zedong’s solution to poverty was to force a socialist economy onto the populace at the expense of an estimated 65 million lives. As The Heritage Foundation notes, “Anyone who got in his way was done away with — by execution, imprisonment or forced famine.”  ~The Patriot Post
