Trump Could Pull US Out
of Iran Nuclear Deal in January
{newsmax.com} ~ President Donald Trump could remove the U.S. from the Iran nuclear accord in January 2018, according to Politico.
While some lawmakers and national security officials are attempting to keep the deal in force, the deal's supporters believe Trump has become more willing to go against their advice, such as when he recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
The last time Trump addressed the deal's status in mid-October, he insisted Congress and European countries address the deal's limitations.
Members of Congress are talking about legislation to extend the deal and give the president political cover, but Republicans and Democrats might not be able to agree on such legislation in time.
The deadline for recertifying the deal comes around every 90 days, with the next Jan. 11, the report said.
Other upcoming deadlines address the temporary waiver of U.S. sanctions against Iran, which Trump must renew every 120 days. If Trump rejects the waivers and restores sanctions, Iran could restart its nuclear program, the deal's supporters said.
Supporters of the deal say it has worked in preventing Iran from gaining nuclear arms. H.R. McMaster, Trump's national security adviser, has met with senators in both parties to work on legislation that would make the president agree to stay in the deal.
The president has criticized the deal, and on the campaign trail, he promised to remove the U.S. from it. When he announced in October he would not recertify the deal, he called it "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into."
