{ ijr.com } ~ President Donald Trump declared the Islamic Republic of Iran made a “big mistake” after the commander of their Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down a U.S. drone... as Republican lawmakers take different stances on a possible military conflict between the two nations. In response to the news, Trump published a tweet Thursday morning announcing that the Islamic Republic made a “very big mistake” in shooting down a U.S. drone over the Strait of Hormuz. The military strike by Iran brought up questions of legality regarding the Trump administration’s authority to retaliate under the 2001 authorization to use military force (AUMF). The State Department’s special envoy for Iran Brian Hook would not answer directly questions about whether or not the Trump administration believed it could use AUMF against Iran during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday, asserting that the administration would “comply with the law” if “military force” was needed to protect “national security interest.” “If the use of military force is necessary to defend U.S. national security interest, we will do everything that we are required to do with respect to congressional war powers and we will comply with the law,” Hook said. His testimony came after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee there was “no doubt” that there was a “connection” between “Iran and al Qaeda.” Republican lawmakers are split on whether or not the president has the authority to retaliate to the attack without congressional approval. Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) — who sits on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations — told reporters that he believes Trump does have the authority as the action would be “defensive” in nature. “They don’t have to, because they’re not talking about offensive activities, they’re talking about defensive activities,” said the Florida Republican. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who also serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he was “good to go” regarding the issue of legal authorization. { dailysignal.com } ~ Congressional Democrats are taking the lead to renew a list of long-dead tax subsidies at the behest of powerful corporate lobbyists... Their plan is to attach the long-sought-after corporate tax subsidies—called “tax extenders”—to a bill that expands welfare spending. How to pay for it? They plan to cover about a quarter of it by raising the estate tax. The rest would be added to the already-massive federal deficit. The House Ways and Means Committee will consider the package of bills on Thursday. There are 14 tax credits and other privileges under consideration that subsidize certain types of energy production and use. Biofuels, plug-in electric vehicles, coal facilities, and energy efficient homes all have their own carve-outs. There are other subsidies as well—for instance, for an American Samoan tuna plant; a renewed program for low-income areas that government research has repeatedly found to be ineffective; an increased tax on coal; and a paid family leave subsidy that acts as a windfall tax benefit, as it is almost exclusively used by businesses that are already providing leave in the free market. The House committee plans to pair its corporate subsidy bill with a bill that would temporarily expand payments to taxpayers with children and to low-income workers. The proposal includes new welfare spending through the “refundable” child tax credit for people who currently don’t pay any income taxes. An expanded credit for child and dependent care expenses is proposed, and the beginning of the phase-down from the new 50% credit to the existing 20% credit would be increased to $120,000 a year—up from its current $15,000 threshold. New York is the state with the highest tax burden in the country, but the Governor has fracking despite the likely existence of trillions of cubic feet of natural gas underground that could add thousands of jobs for upstate New Yorkers and given the state a revenue stream that might help lower taxes. He’s fought the Second Amendment by pressuring several financial service providers, banks, and insurance providers against doing business with the NRA. He was accused of threatening organizations that did not endorse him for re-election: “Bill Lipton, the Working Families Party’s state director, said he was present at a meeting earlier in the week where scumbag-Cuomo warned, “If unions or anyone give money to any of these groups, they can lose my number.” scumbag-Cuomo has said that people disagree with him weren’t welcome in his state, “Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Radical CAIR Activists

{ investigativeproject.org } ~ "What's the one thing you want funders to do differently to support the pro-immigrant and -refugee movement?"... This is the question posed by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) on Monday to highlight the organization's members. The NCRP claims to promote "philanthropy that serves the public good, is responsive to people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity, and is held accountable to the highest standards of integrity and openness." It's difficult to see how NCRP lived up to that standard when it showcased two Islamist activists with a history of bigoted and anti-Semitic views: Zainab Arain and Abbas Barzegar. Both work in the Council on American-Islamic Relations' (CAIR), research and advocacy department, which Barzegar directs and Arain serves as manager. Arain has peddled anti-Semitic conspiracies suggesting Israel harvests dead Palestinians' organs, akin to a modern-day blood libel. She has promoted articles from fringe and conspiratorial websites promoting the anti-Semitic view that Israel controls U.S. foreign policy. So how did the CAIR officials respond to NCRP's question? They "simply ask that funders commit to divesting from anti-human agendas: Those that advocate separation of families, ethnic and religious bigotry, and toxic political discourses." Unfortunately, NCRP needs to be held accountable for highlighting two Islamist activists that have a history of making radical comments and work for an organization that propagates anti-Semitic views...

Mass Shooting Attack Against 

Jews Thwarted in California

{ clarionproject.org } ~ Tipped off by someone who saw comments in a chat room, police in California arrested a 23-year-old man planning a mass shooting attack against Jews... Ross Anthony Farca of Concord posted the threats on a popular gaming website. Authorities say he was planning a copycat attack of the Philadelphia Tree of Life Pittsburgh synagogue attack as well as the more recent attack against members of the Chabad synagogue in Poway, California. He was charged with threatening to indiscriminately kill Jewish people. A search of Farca’s home, which he shared with his mother, revealed an illegally built AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, 13 magazines, a three-foot sword, camouflage clothing and books about Hitler Youth and Nazi life. Relieved neighbors reported they were concerned about Farca’s behavior for years, saying he had the potential for violence. Authorities says he intended to wear a Nazi uniform during the attack. A further search of his posts revealed that he referred to the Christchurch mosque shooter who killed 51 in a attack as a hero. Conservatives Must Be Good Bureaucrats?

Lewis Morris:  Conservatives often feel as if we’re getting nowhere in the fight to reduce the size and scope of government back to within constitutional bounds. We’re too often scoring small political victories here and there while the balance of power tilts inexorably to the Left. There’s definitely a sense in which conservatives are playing for fun while leftists are playing for keeps.

Lyman Stone at The Federalist suggests that one real problem for conservatives is a big one: “how to fill the innumerable appointments and support roles in modern government with people who will reliably advance a conservative vision of government.”

A maxim in life is that if you truly like doing something, then you will excel at it. You put in the time and effort, you care, and you are inspired by your work. Leftists love government and bureaucracy. They have a vested interest in maintaining government beyond its simple function to serve and protect society. They welcome any program, exploit, or endeavor that will increase its size and scope.

Conservatives don’t like or trust government. We see it as necessary in a world of fallible humans. As James Madison put it in Federalist 51, “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.” For this reason, conservatives are quite wary of the expanding bureaucracy that is the hallmark of modern times.

“This preference for philosophizing about government rather than learning to master government is a very real thing among some conservatives,” Stone points out (italics in original). “Everyone is arguing about philosophy of governance, yet there are no credible suggestions about what should actually be done, given that Republicans do actually control the presidency right now.”

Stone argues, “We need a Federalist Society-type organization to train young conservatives to become federal bureaucrats if we want to slay the Big Government leviathan.”

Indeed, the Federalist Society’s work in cultivating conservative talent in the legal field has been essential in President Donald Trump’s task to bring the federal judiciary back to the side of Rule of Law. Other conservative groups and think tanks have been effective at nudging judges to adopt more conservative positions and getting policy actors to embrace fiscally conservative policies. The same could arguably be true of the legislative branch, with the Club for Growth being an example of a group fighting the long fight for more conservative legislators.

Stone points out, though, that these efforts need to expand to the executive branch.

“We talk about the federal government as this overwhelming entity that tramples on rights and liberties and is far too powerful and vast, and then we send young people to fight the federal government armed with nothing but their summer reading list and a few weeks’ experience processing mailers,” says Stone. “If conservatives are serious about rolling back the administrative state, we need to be training socially conservative young people to have the skills necessary to step into the Department of Interior on day one of a new administration and actually make a difference.”

The best way to successfully contain the federal bureaucracy is to control the levers of power in the executive and legislative branch that enable it. At the same time, Stone makes a compelling case that conservatives must advance through the bureaucratic ranks and become more involved in the inner workings of government. To ignore this opportunity is to cede control of the government to the leftists.  ~The Patriot Post
