America 1776-2008

Dear Americans,...

I'm drowning....The life rafts aren't reaching me...The captain of the ship won't look at me and has turned the other way.... I can't tread much longer...  I see some of you reaching out for me...screaming, yelling and encouraging me to hold on....Some are promising to save me.... to bring me back on solid ground where I can stand again... tall and strong..... I'm reaching out to you....my hand extended, straining to grab onto you....to be pulled out from this sinking despair...  I now see the sad faces looking down at me... wishing that things had turned out differently...That they could of saved me....If I had the chance to speak to them now, I would tell them that I miss me...I once gave opportunity, gave hope and gave promise....I now just see the change that has overtaken me.... I am no longer the proud and the beautiful....I am forever changed....and I no longer recognize me...as I have drowned....If only the captain of the ship had looked at me....REALLY looked at me...If only he had realized that I was worth saving.....

Signed,

America 1776-2008
