A Melodrama

The chamber was filled with a joyous throng,
Awaiting their illustrious chief.
And then he appeared with his toothy smile,
And spoke with his usual charm.

She turned to her neighbor and softly sighed,
There’s riches where he comes from.
But he’s bought and paid for not to lead,
Though he lives in a mansion grand.

We’re only birds in a guilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see.
You may think we are happy and free from care,
We’re not though we seem to be.

‘Tis sad when you think of the wasted lives,
For we cannot long survive.
Our youth was sold for a pot of fool’s gold,
We’re birds in a guilded cage.

(To the tune of A Bird in a Guilded Cage)
