USDA study reveals what food stamps are really spent on

Michael Bloomberg and Michelle Obama have been lecturing us (or at least those among us who use food stamps, aka SNAP) to no avail when it comes to sugary soft drinks.  Anahad O’Conner of the New York Times reports:

What do households on food stamps buy at the grocery store?

The answer was largely a mystery until now. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the $74 billion food stamp program called SNAP, has published a detailed report that provides a glimpse into the shopping cart of the typical household that receives food stamps.

The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft drinks, which accounted for about 10 percent of the dollars they spent on food.

The food stamp crowd likes soft drinks a lot more than those who pay for their own food:

SNAP households spent 9.3 percent of their grocery budgets on soft drinks alone. That was slightly higher than the 7.1 percent figure for households that do not receive food stamps.

That amounts to 31% more soft drink consumption by those who don’t have to pay for it.  Let me hazard a guess that people who qualify for food stamps also disproportionately do not pay fully for their medical care though either Medicaid or Obamacare subsidies.

This displeases the nanny staters:

"In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy of the soda industry," said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. "It's pretty shocking."

The food stamp program has been a fraud magnet from the start. Consider the $16 million fraud ring just busted in Baltimore:

More than a dozen retail store operators in and around Baltimore have been charged in connection to a huge food stamp and wire fraud scheme.

The indictments allege the retailers received more than $16 million in federal payments for transactions in which they did not provide any food, a fraud scheme commonly known as “food stamp trafficking.” (snip)

The indictments allege that the defendants illegally exchanged EBT benefits for cash, instead. To avoid detection, they debited the funds from the card in multiple transactions over a period of hours or days, or called a different store where the transaction was processed manually, the Department of Justice says.

As a result these transactions, they allegedly obtained more than $16,482,270 in EBT deposits for transactions in which food sales never occurred or were substantially inflated and split the proceeds with food stamp recipients.

There isn’t a lot of diversity among the people charged in this Baltimore ring.

EXACTLY.  The government was NEVER mean't to fix everybody's problems, and SHOULDN'T be expected to.  You do what you can for yourself, and then go to family, friends, church, community, etc...

Four words, located in the preamble to our Constitution, have been used to justify the elephantine welfare system.

The words in question?
"...promote the general Welfare..."
These 4 words are part and parcel of the passages in that preamble, which is referent to the welfare of our Republic NOT personal welfare of the individual.

Strong families and communities are built upon self-determination and personal fellowship... with ones family and friends. Since the government has intervened to replace family and community... our neighborhoods and families have become bankrupt institutions filed with dependency and strangers...

There is something defining to be said of a people whose strong moral character... provides for their own.   A society buttressed by strong family values, close community identification, and an abiding Christian  ethic, surly binds them together, through both the good and tough times.  This is the American dream that was once the treasured product of our Christian heritage and culture.

Today, America has become fixated on the ID (self)... on personal gratification and aggrandizement.  The People have abdicated their individual responsibility to their family and community; looking for strangers in the government and twisted political ideologies too take care of their duty to others.  Such cultural decay has isolated and divided America. Diversity has become a byword for isolating entire segments of our culture and communities. Identity politics, focuses on what the government can do for YOU...  rather than on personal responsibility and building viable communities.

We must rediscover the American Dream... and our duty to family and one another ... Our Christian heritage and accountability for our own lives.  We embrace God, Family and Community in that order... if we are to reproduce what our founders established..

Good Post Col.  When we surrender ourselves to Govt.dependency, we lose, and lose it all.  America was founded, by a bunch of people, who chose to try and do better for themselves. They knew it meant very hard work, and they had no cushion.    It was a daring "sink or swim" proposition, no safety net.   But these people had the pride and courage to want to do it for themselves.  Today in Obama's world, ambition has become a dirty word, success even more so.  Dependency is the norm, accountability is out. However, in barely the nick of time, this Nation finally saw it, and in one fell sweep, rejected the whole manta.  It is out, losing is no longer admirable, "Winning" now is the Trend, the "Big Thing". So, get ready America, change is coming, and it will be a change we have long awaited.  God Bless & Keep our New President and his Family safe.

Dale, You nailed it !

Food stamp fraud hot line: (this use to be the number I think it still is)

I talked to my doc several years ago, and he said I was heading into diabetes.  The very first thing he said after that was "STOP DRINKING SOFT DRINKS OF ANY KIND, 100%.  DRINK WATER INSTEAD."  And I have!  Good choice.  Now, if we can JUST get all these SNAP folks offa soft drinks, too... THEN OFFA EVERYTHING ELSE.

Andy  ANY thing, solid or liquid, that converts to sugar in the your enemy.

Never eat/drink anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup, ever ever ever.

Go two weeks without fruit, bread, gluten, and you will break the addictions to bread and sugar.
If you make it through those two weeks, which, for me, was not that bad, then fruit will take on a whole new life, and become more like dessert, and the bread (converts to sugar) addiction will also subside. Go organic on all fruit and veggies, eat clean meat, Pacific deep fish and your diabetes will go away. Exercise also. high intensity, short periods of time, this resets your hormones for days. As little as 6 minutes to 15 minutes, 3x per week, can do it.

Excellent!  That's more than my doc said.  Seems easy enuff to do, too.  Thanks!

Good advice, and it will do more for anyone that takes your advice then what there doctor will tell them. I would add lots of minerals to your diet as well. The funny thing is if you have a sick cow or horse the vet always tells ya to add minerals to there diet. But it seems medical doctors tell you, you don't need then just eat right. Eat right ya how do you do that when everything is man made on the shelfs in the store. There is only about a one isle in the store that is real food the rest comes in a box.

Back in "the day", when food stamps were actually paper coupons I was without funds and no job long enough to qualify for a few bucks a week in the stamps,

I went to the local welfare office and spend an entire day filling out a 30 line form (name, address, how long unemployed, what are you qualified to do, did you apply for work, etc.  simple stuff that could have been completed in about 10 minutes) -- as I said, the entire freaking day for that form which had to be done  in lock-step with the 50 or so other applicants in that room.  Anyway, I was done with my form in about 10 minutes and sitting there playing with my pencil when the welfare queen running the show asked me why I was not writing.  I told her that my form was complete and asked if I could turn it in and get on with what life I had.  She told me that I was __NOT ALLOWED_ to finish that form ahead of the others and she made me start over with a new form.  At least they had to wait only name and address.

anyway, I filled out my form and qualified for a few dollars in stamps.  A couple of weeks later, they arrived in the mail and I went to the local grocery to get some food.  I carefully picked out canned goods that would store well and one good-looking but rather small steak that would fit within the amount of stamps and went to checkout.

The cashier took my stamps and proceeded to tell me in LOUD tones that I really should not be wasting my stamps on such things as steak. (I wish that would happen now).  At that time, I had a fairly thin skin and the incident embarrassed me no end, resulting in my putting my steak back and getting a few more cans of beans in its place.   I never re-applied for the damned things.  I found it to be far too embarrassing then and I still feel that way although my "skin" is much, much thicker now.

The can take their SNAP and shove it.

Anyway, the cause for the above rant is that the clerk in that grocery yelled at me for mis-using my food stamps and that does not happen today.

Why can we not force such since the law can be misconstrued to make a Christian baker sell his goods to someone for a thing that violates his religious tenets?  Since cash is king and SNAP is cash, for all practical purposes, it would seem to be a no-brainer to force proper use of it.

Cease, desist, stop this total "Give-away".  To rein in a Govt. so large, will not be easy, to find all the Perps who abuse this could take years.  However, new Guidelines could be established, Drug testing for one, for another a mandatory Work Program, want Welfare, then you must work a certain amount of time,  to learn a Trade. Change the Guidelines where only necessary Foods can be purchased, no Junk Food, no soda, no liquor, no cigarettes. Nothing but food.  They have a system that identifies items to be "Taxed', they can do the same with Food Stamps.  No more shopping at Costco, if you have the $50.00 entry fee, you are not in need of assistance. Strict guidelines should be established as to Grocery Stores only, accepting them.

Pelosi Disaster!  95% Of Americans Tuned Out Impeachment Show Trials On Friday — Only The Second Day Of Testimony

Despite the constant hype Americans are already tuning out the sham impeachment trials.

On the second day of the public show trials 95% of Americans turned off the nonsense.

Americans are worn out by all of the fake news and hysteria.

Yawn: 95% of U.S. Adults Skipped Day 2 of Democrats' Impeachment Hearings

Yawn: 95% of U.S. Adults Skipped Friday’s Impeachment Hearings

Americans aren’t exactly obsessed with the Democrats’ impeachment hearings, it seems. Friday’s second day of live, wall-to-wall coverage drew an average of 12.7 million viewers on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN,

Flashback: Horrible News For Shifty Schiff – Majority Of Americans Don’t Want Impeachment, 76% Don’t Trust Dems And Believe Media Is Pushing The Sham

No One in American Wants Impeachment except the Far-left Socialist Democrats and their Corrupt Media. They hate President Trump because he is a winner. He beat them and he’s making America great again as he said he would.

The Democrats and their corrupt media are totally blinded by their rage and they don’t realize that no one is in favor of impeachment.

We reported a week ago that FOX News released a poll where they stated that 49% of Americans were for Trump Impeachment. But their polling was flawed. The real extrapolated results of the poll using an accurate proportion of Republicans, Democrats and Independents showed that only 30% of Americans are in favor of Trump’s Impeachment and they’re all Democrats.

Next, a few days ago we reported on another poll that was consistent with the results of our extrapolated FOX News poll.

Nearly three quarters of all Americans have little or no trust in the way that Schifty Schiff is running the impeachment process –

Heritage Action   Heritage_Action

You won’t hear this in the mainstream media: Nearly three fourths of Americans have little to no trust in the House Democrats’ handling of their impeachment process. 🤔

Today another poll was released with similar results.

Most Americans believe that the corrupt media is trying to help get President Trump impeached. Three-quarter of Republicans, half of independents and even a third of Democrats believe this to be the case. No one trusts Schifty Shiff or the corrupt media pushing his impeachment sham.

1- "Seventy-six percent (76%) of Republicans and a plurality (48%) of voters not affiliated with either major political party say most reporters are trying to help impeach Trump, a view shared by only 36% of Democrats."

Let's recast that last phrase

Rasmussen Reports @Rasmussen_Poll

Most Say Media Working With Democrats to Impeach Trump...

This is perhaps the worst gaffe in modern political history.

This Schiff Show does not have a happy ending for the Democrats. Even with the support of the entire corrupt fake news media, it’s a total sham and everyone knows it!
