USDA study reveals what food stamps are really spent on

Michael Bloomberg and Michelle Obama have been lecturing us (or at least those among us who use food stamps, aka SNAP) to no avail when it comes to sugary soft drinks.  Anahad O’Conner of the New York Times reports:

What do households on food stamps buy at the grocery store?

The answer was largely a mystery until now. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the $74 billion food stamp program called SNAP, has published a detailed report that provides a glimpse into the shopping cart of the typical household that receives food stamps.

The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft drinks, which accounted for about 10 percent of the dollars they spent on food.

The food stamp crowd likes soft drinks a lot more than those who pay for their own food:

SNAP households spent 9.3 percent of their grocery budgets on soft drinks alone. That was slightly higher than the 7.1 percent figure for households that do not receive food stamps.

That amounts to 31% more soft drink consumption by those who don’t have to pay for it.  Let me hazard a guess that people who qualify for food stamps also disproportionately do not pay fully for their medical care though either Medicaid or Obamacare subsidies.

This displeases the nanny staters:

"In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy of the soda industry," said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. "It's pretty shocking."

The food stamp program has been a fraud magnet from the start. Consider the $16 million fraud ring just busted in Baltimore:

More than a dozen retail store operators in and around Baltimore have been charged in connection to a huge food stamp and wire fraud scheme.

The indictments allege the retailers received more than $16 million in federal payments for transactions in which they did not provide any food, a fraud scheme commonly known as “food stamp trafficking.” (snip)

The indictments allege that the defendants illegally exchanged EBT benefits for cash, instead. To avoid detection, they debited the funds from the card in multiple transactions over a period of hours or days, or called a different store where the transaction was processed manually, the Department of Justice says.

As a result these transactions, they allegedly obtained more than $16,482,270 in EBT deposits for transactions in which food sales never occurred or were substantially inflated and split the proceeds with food stamp recipients.

There isn’t a lot of diversity among the people charged in this Baltimore ring.

Thank you for your service

thank you for your effort in reporting this food stamp abuse.  Please do continue to report such illegal activities to the food stamp people.  If enough of us report, then something will be done about the cheats.

To solve the problem food stamp stores need to be set up. You may only shop at these stores with your food stamps. Have food basic's, milk, bread, eggs, meat, fruit and vegtables. If you don't like it, buy your own food. There are plenty of ghost stores in malls and neighborhoods that could be rented. Make food stamp users work in the store so many hours a week to recieve benifits.

If you feed off the government and tax payers you loose your rights to free choice. I'm so tired of moochers feelings be accounted for. The really poor and in need would not care where they shopped, they just want and need the food. Whatever happen to the saying, "beggars can't be choosers"?

I don't think we are going to solve the problem of food stamp

There's no need for special stores.  The cards can be programmed to only buy what you should.  I remember the early days of ebt cards when a woman in front of my at the check out couldn't buy the orange juice she had in her cart because it had to be a certain brand.  They shouldn't be allowed "cash back" so they can spend it in other ways either.  You have to use the card, and things like pop, cigarettes, cruises, liquor, etc. are............................DECLINED.  And yeah...if you're on food stamps/welfare and are able bodied and don't have a job...then they need to be doing community service and doing SOMETHING to earn their food stamps.

Very good idea, Vickie.  I have a Friend ,who works to give out food at a Church, and the People come in,  and demand name brands of particular things, and then get mad , if they do not have it on hand.  Then they simply go to the next Church or Food Bank to find what they want.    The worst part is that no one objects.   Nobody questions them. Free-loading has become a Profession.

I used to work at a church in Olathe, KS, and handled the Food Pantry.  They'd fill out a card with name, address, number of people in family.  They didn't get to pick and choose anything, we filled a bag/box with the number of cans of assorted veggies, bread, staples according to how many in the family, and handed them out.

I noticed that many of the blacks who came out to a white community from clear on the OTHER side of KCMO, and were driving around the least 40 miles of traveling all over the city to visit every church and food bank in the metro---all had expensive clothes/shoes, new tattoos, a car better than mine, purses full of cigarettes.  Some were coming every week.  They were selling their ebt cards for cash, buying things other than food, then after they used the money they got for the cards for everything BUT food, would come to us for handouts.  I point this out to the church committees, and then we started limiting their visits to ONE a month. Then we coordinated with other churches to see if they had already visited another church, and if they'd already received food somewhere else, denied them 2nd, 3rd, 4th helpings to handouts.

YUP....freeloading has become a profession

Great info Marilyn, I am glad someone spotted the abuse, and actually did something about it.  If people we more observant, and paid more attention, then acted upon reporting abuse, we'd solve more problems.  To say these people are complete opportunists, is calling them something nice, they are thieves, taking from us, who by Law, are required to support them. Privatize the Welfare Dept., hire Contractors to run it, Govt. has sure as hell proved they are inept.

They just proved that OVER $2 BILLION went to fraud.

All this is a farce and cover up to the real problem.

I am a realist and a common sense person! If we knew the real truth, I would bet that at least ONE HALF of the $70 BILLION went, in one way or another, to BUYING DRUGS.

Sure there are good people that need assistance and help, but there are many that simply apply for them, sell them to buy drugs with. Seen it, know it! And then when you report it, nothing happens and they continue to get them.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong!!

With all the waste and fraud it makes it all the harder on those that do need and rely on the EBT card for part of their food . . . .

The biggest fraud abusers are those that handle the paper work for the EBT system.

Exactly! and that's the reason why the Democrats who is in the white house knows that there are people are taking advantage of the food stamp

There needs to be a toll free number established to report suspected food stamp fraud... posted prominently wherever food stamps are accepted.. with a reward of 1000-10,000 dollars for every case successful prosecuted.

That should slow down the fraud.... as the drug addicts turn one another in for the cash reward.

People who are in need should be helped back on their feet by family members, friends, and the Christians in the local community, not government.

Government has no business in providing welfare. The government is broke. It has no money other than that of the tax paying (working) public, which is not there to be given away for drug use. It is there for the government to  provide the service of defending the Nation from those who would destroy it from without, and from within.

I know of many people on WIC who are lazy pigs refusing to work at all. Those who are truly down and out should be able to find relief from the above, not government.

Government is the problem, not the solution. Look at it this way. Professional politicians are on welfare. Food stamps, for life. Do you think John Lewis ever worked a day in his life? How about Obama? Biden? Bill Clinton? The majority of our government is made of leeches, toads and shiftless idiots who consider getting elected as a prize rather than a brief opportunity to serve their country.

Like minimum wage, food stamps are used for votes, for political support, so that those in charge remain in charge.

Gohmert: Dems Will Drag Out Impeachment — Try To Get ‘Best Socialist’ Nominated For President

During an appearance on Huntsville, AL radio’s WVNN on Thursday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) offered his best assessment of what House Democrats were trying to accomplish with their impeachment efforts.

Gohmert told WVNN’s “The Jeff Poor Show” impeachment could tie up the Democratic Party’s presidential campaign efforts but predicted Democrats would use the occasion to nominate “the best socialist” they can.

“They would lose in the Senate,” Gohmert said on impeachment. “And besides that, the entire time it was on trial in the Senate, the Democrats who are running for president wouldn’t be allowed to campaign. That’s in the Constitution. They wouldn’t be able to campaign. I just can’t imagine them wanting to do that because if they send it to the Senate, they have now perfectly set up the scenario of 1996, where they will reassure Donald Trump is reelected as president. They don’t want to do that. They’re probably going to drag this thing out as long as they possibly can … through Iowa, through primaries — try to get the best socialist they can to be nominated.”

“Then just end up and say, ‘Now we’re close enough to the general election. We’ve thrown mud at the president through the House,’” he continued. “What they’re really doing — they’re using taxpayer funds to campaign against Trump. That’s all this is — a campaign fund that taxpayers are paying for in order to try to throw mud at the president. I’ll be surprised if they have that vote, but I can’t imagine they want to set up this president for reelection by having a trial in the Senate where they lose.”
