US Citizenship, Benefits Of Statehood With No Federal Income Tax? Puerto Rico’s Special Sweetheart Deal From DC

For many of us the benefits and disadvantages of status as a territory versus statehood are vague, virtually meaningless abstract ideas that have nothing to do with our daily lives. They’re things we never even consider unless a particular instance draws it to our attention. This past Sunday, an article on Breitbart.cominvolving Ben Carson’s support for statehood for Puerto Rico, served that purpose. It motivated me to look a little closer and learn a few things about Puerto Rico and its relationship with the United States. It leads one to wonder if an endorsement of statehood is the kind of thing that would enhance a political candidacy or label one as being a threat to the island residents.

While noting that Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush have both also expressed similar pro-statehood positions, the article put forward two very enlightening statements. First, “In four nonbinding referendums on the island’s status held over the past half century, the idea of statehood has never won a clear majority from Puerto Rican voters.”

While that might seem surprising initially, with the common perception among Americans being that US statehood is the Crown jewel, the status of preference for any nation or territory, the second part of that paragraph cleared things up considerably. It stated, “Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but those living on the island do not owe federal income taxes, paying only Social Security and Medicare taxes to the federal government.”

That's just what America needs.  Another bottomless pit of corruption to throw billions of taxpayer dollars into.  Anything smell fishy to you?

Just one of many reasons I would NEVER vote for Dr. Carson.

There is (0) advantage to making it a state. They don't want to because they get everything FREE now. Why become a state when you get it all free???

"Stupid assumptions. They are unfounded and wrong!

Here are just a few of the programs provided to PR on OUR TAX DOLLAR!!!!

The Adult Programs in the Territories provide monthly cash payments eligible to financially deprived aged, blind and disabled persons in Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. These payments help with food, shelter, clothing, and other daily living needs.

Puerto Rico operates this program in place of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Public welfare in Puerto Rico is a system of nutrition assistancepublic health, education, and subsidized public housing, among others, provided to the impoverished population of the island. It is mainly funded by United States Federal assistance and by local government funds.

Puerto Rico received more than $6.5 billion annually in federal aid from the United States.[1] A substantial portion of this amount is earmarked for public welfare, including funding educational programs (such as Head Start), subsidized housing programs (such as (Section 8 and public housing projects), and a food stamp system called the Nutrition Assistance for Puerto Rico program.

The following programs are provided by the U.S. Federal government in Puerto Rico:

  • Head Start Program

The United States Congress, for budgetary reasons, has capped Puerto Rico's participation in the federal Medicaid program. The current annual spending cap of about $230 million is about 15% of the $1.6 billion that Puerto Rico would receive if equal treatment applied.

Nutrition Assistance for Puerto Rico (NAP) —SpanishPrograma de Asistencia Nutricional (PAN) commonly known in Puerto Rican Spanish as Cupones (English: Food Stamps)— is a federal assistance nutritional program provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) solely to Puerto Rico. It provides over $1.5 billion USD in supplemental economic resources to help just over 1 million impoverished residents cope with their nutritional needs.[1][2] It is based on, though not directly part of, the USDA's national Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.[3][4]

Homeownership Assistance

NO, I am not a politician! However, I am a "True Conservative" who believes that we don't need to add another state that has NOTHING to offer in order to pay their own way.

What would we, as a country, be raping them of? Other than some nice beaches for tourists and a small amount of sugar cane, please inform of anything that would make it a value to the United States?

We are giving PR 6.5 BILLION a year in assistance. We could buy the whole island for less than that.

No wonder there is nothing left for the citizens that need help here.

WTF! If they are considered U.S. Citizens then they should be paying income tax. Or no one should pay income tax. Cut off the SS, and medicare payments to the U.S. and let them fend for themselves.

Go for it shame we can not do that in the UK.It would make things

By all means, if missing, Congress should confer income tax administration to the Guam government (after all, the states do it independently), but BY NO MEANS should Guam gain statehood as compensation for loss of an undue advantage. It is an isolated island naturally set up to be an entitlement recipient, and you know what kind of political participation can be expected from that in Washington, D.C. ! (think Hawaii)

Obama has been trying to get Puerto Rico for years.  He so wants those votes.  That is so not fair to all the other states and all should be screaming.  Perhaps the states that do pay income tax should stop.

Holy shit "Batman" I'm moving to Puerto Rico!

Cut them loose --they produce nothing

Puerto Rico has been a protectorate as long as I can remember. Every couple of years there is a push for statehood and it is always rejected. They get millions and millions from thr U.S. with no responsibility.

I was at a botanical garden in San Jaun and stumble upon acres of pole barns with brand new equipment in them that had never been used. Out front there was a supervisor and a worker with a hand Sicle cutting the lawn. I asked why they didn't use the equipment in the barns and the super pointed to the man with the Sicle and said, "If I did, he wouldn't have a job." But we keep on sending equipment and money.

Good deal huh?

Pelosi Disaster!  95% Of Americans Tuned Out Impeachment Show Trials On Friday — Only The Second Day Of Testimony

Despite the constant hype Americans are already tuning out the sham impeachment trials.

On the second day of the public show trials 95% of Americans turned off the nonsense.

Americans are worn out by all of the fake news and hysteria.

Yawn: 95% of U.S. Adults Skipped Day 2 of Democrats' Impeachment Hearings

Yawn: 95% of U.S. Adults Skipped Friday’s Impeachment Hearings

Americans aren’t exactly obsessed with the Democrats’ impeachment hearings, it seems. Friday’s second day of live, wall-to-wall coverage drew an average of 12.7 million viewers on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN,

Flashback: Horrible News For Shifty Schiff – Majority Of Americans Don’t Want Impeachment, 76% Don’t Trust Dems And Believe Media Is Pushing The Sham

No One in American Wants Impeachment except the Far-left Socialist Democrats and their Corrupt Media. They hate President Trump because he is a winner. He beat them and he’s making America great again as he said he would.

The Democrats and their corrupt media are totally blinded by their rage and they don’t realize that no one is in favor of impeachment.

We reported a week ago that FOX News released a poll where they stated that 49% of Americans were for Trump Impeachment. But their polling was flawed. The real extrapolated results of the poll using an accurate proportion of Republicans, Democrats and Independents showed that only 30% of Americans are in favor of Trump’s Impeachment and they’re all Democrats.

Next, a few days ago we reported on another poll that was consistent with the results of our extrapolated FOX News poll.

Nearly three quarters of all Americans have little or no trust in the way that Schifty Schiff is running the impeachment process –

Heritage Action   Heritage_Action

You won’t hear this in the mainstream media: Nearly three fourths of Americans have little to no trust in the House Democrats’ handling of their impeachment process. 🤔

Today another poll was released with similar results.

Most Americans believe that the corrupt media is trying to help get President Trump impeached. Three-quarter of Republicans, half of independents and even a third of Democrats believe this to be the case. No one trusts Schifty Shiff or the corrupt media pushing his impeachment sham.

1- "Seventy-six percent (76%) of Republicans and a plurality (48%) of voters not affiliated with either major political party say most reporters are trying to help impeach Trump, a view shared by only 36% of Democrats."

Let's recast that last phrase

Rasmussen Reports @Rasmussen_Poll

Most Say Media Working With Democrats to Impeach Trump...

This is perhaps the worst gaffe in modern political history.

This Schiff Show does not have a happy ending for the Democrats. Even with the support of the entire corrupt fake news media, it’s a total sham and everyone knows it!
