Trigger Warnings, Campus Speech, and the Right to Not Be Offended

"It's really not anyone else's business to tell someone when they are mentally and emotionally ready to deal with things," says Bailey Loverin, a University of Santa Barbara (UCSB) junior who authored a resolution to mandate that professors issue "trigger warnings" before presenting material that might trigger memories of past traumas in students.

Feminist and social justice blogs popularized the concept of the trigger warning, with writers encouraging each other to label posts that might trigger flashbacks to sexual assault or domestic abuse. As the popularity, and scope, of the trigger warning idea grew, some bloggers began listing potential triggers, ranging from rape and violence and suicide to snakes and needles and even "small holes."

Oberlin College attracted media attention when its Office of Equity Concerns posted, and later removed, a trigger warning guide advising professors to avoid triggering topics such as racism, colonialism, and sexism when possible. The memo also suggests introducing discussions of potentially triggering works with language such as this:

We are reading this work in spite of the author’s racist frameworks because his work was foundational to establishing the field of anthropology, and because I think together we can challenge, deconstruct, and learn from his mistakes.

Loverin says that her trigger warning resolution is much more narrowly tailored to protect sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But she also goes a step further than anyone has at Oberlin by proposing that trigger warnings in the classroom be mandated.

"I don't feel that it's a problem asking for this to be mandated," says Loverin. "You're always going to have someone that's going to argue, 'Why? This is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to do this because I don't feel it. Why should anyone else?'"

Loverin's resolution passed the student-run Academic Senate and now awaits review by the faculty legislative body. Greg Lukianoff, President of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), worries that mandated trigger warnings would set a troubling precedent on campus. He points to an incident that occured on the UCBS campus only days after the resolution passed wherein an associate professor of feminist studies stole a sign from pro-life protesters and then pushed one of them away when she tried to take the sign back. The professor's defense?

"What she argued was that the display was triggering," says Lukianoff. "It's a very unforunate part of human nature. If you give us an excuse to shut down speech with which we disagree, we're very quick to see it as an opportunity."

A wrinkle, and a new ploy that is not new, for the devil hates free speech, and would control your speech, and he really hates scripture, deriding and casting doubt upon it, and forever more wishes you not to utter it, and so Michelle giggles, thinking of a new word the slaves will not be allowed to say, and the Muslims and Obama promote Sharia, and say all the old, white folks need to die, as the devil clamors for Separation of Church and State. And as Obama sells the internet to repressive control and banishes the late-night, talk-show hosts, and puts monitors in the newsrooms, they wish for the opposite of the wishes of the Christian founders, and it is one of the ways that one knows the founders were Christian, those who founded our country on the principle of Free Speech. The founders did not like anyone telling them what they could not say, but here we have the latest ploy to do just that. But the term "racism" is not about the difference of race, but, rather, if one offends another, and one is only allowed to say complimentary things, if he would not be called racist by the Racism Mafia. And so Obama trashes the Constitution, and gives billions to Iran, and sells the land to the Chinese, but it is racist to criticize him, and we have not the right, according to Oprah, and The Rev of the god of Racism Al, and we are to keep our mouths shut! And ask the devil about the Separation of Church and State, too. Go along to get along, if you know what is good for you, for the devil, himself, really hates those who will not happily do what he says, keeping their mouths shut, but according to the song, "Draw a Line," "you're gonna get hurt if you don't hide, but living like them is suicide; you're gonna die, anyway, so who don't you live until you do." And a fellow who bravely stands forth on the front lines, expounding the principles of Libertarianism, said of Phil Robertson: "I am not religious. However the lesson I learned yesterday is that if you list what you believe to be sins or your sexual preference.... you will have a hard time getting a job. So if you are religious apparently you need to keep that shit to yourself." Such a sage fellow, and absolutely correct, if you would do what the devil wishes for you to do.  I say speak the truth of God's word. No matter.  And do not let the devil, himself, tell you to shut up.

Dan Chandler a big AMEN to that brother!

God Bless America in Jesus' name, Amen!

When the stuff hits the fan we cannot tell these weak minded wimps that anything is wrong it may trigger fear.  I'd love to see their sorry faces when they have no food, water or text messages.  These people have no spine!

Obama Lies Again: – Ignores That The Year After Signing The Stimulus More Than (4) Million Jobs Were Lost

Former President Obama, the only President in US history who had his FBI and other Intel agencies spy on the opposition party candidate, claims that he created the great economy that Americans are enjoying today. The only thing Obama created was debt and massive job losses with his horrible economic recovery.

Yesterday the former President tweeted an effort to take credit for President Trump’s successful economy:

Joe Hoft@joehoft

Of course another @BarackObama lie. He can’t open his mouth without lying. 11 years ago the US lost (4.3) million jobs over the next 12 months. Horrible liar.

Barack Obama  @BarackObama

Eleven years ago today, near the bottom of the worst recession in generations, I signed the Recovery Act, paving the way for more than a decade of economic growth and the longest streak of job creation in American history.

President Obama’s policies were a disgrace and a failure. He doubled the national debt in spite of zero interest rates from the Fed. His recovery was the worst in US history.

Also, Obama’s assertion is just plain false. The ‘Stimulus’ was passed in February 2009 right after Obama took over the Presidency. He promised to not pass any bills for at least a week to allow for the bills to be read by the people but lied as soon as he was sworn in. The Stimulus was hundreds and hundreds of pages of government handouts to Democrat districts and it was close to $1 million. This was not what America needed and it led to the Tea Party.

Far-left Wikipedia has this to say about the Stimulus:

Note that in his infinite wisdom, NYT economist Paul Krugman is credited with arguing that “the stimulus was far smaller than the economic crisis warranted”. (He also said the markets would crash and burn if President Trump was elected President.)

The data shows that the 12 months after Obama’s stimulus, the US lost 4.3 million jobs:

In Obama’s first three years he netted a loss of 1.5 million jobs compared to President Trump who has added more than 6.7 million jobs.

When it comes to the economy, the billionaire schools the community organizer every time.
