The Republican Race Becomes The People vs. The Delegates

Now that Donald Trump has won his big victory in the New York primary, the crucial conflict on the Republican side is The People versus The Delegates. (On the Democratic side, that's not a problem. The Delegates won long ago.)

Trump has been in the middle of this debate -- isn't he always -- taking the position that The People have primacy over The Delegates (or party elites). In New York at least, the people seem to agree with him. About seventy percent of the state's Republican voters, in an exit poll, said that the candidate with the most votes in the primaries should be the party nominee. Results were only slightly lower in Wisconsin.

Trump's position is clearly the small-d democratic one, but he can be faulted for not knowing, or at least not caring, about the delegate rules in advance (states like Colorado and Wyoming not needing a primary or even a caucus before nominating delegates, etc.) and then complaining. This does not speak well of his preparation for the presidency.

But truth and the American way is on Donald's side in this debate, if I may be so bold. Yes, we are a republic, but it is in the best tradition of a republic that the citizens of each state get to choose their state's favorite democratically, preferably by secret ballot. They do in the general election.

That Ted Cruz did so poorly in the New York primary, coming in a distant third to Kasich, can be ascribed to his ill-conceived remarks about "New York values," but also to a reaction to his backroom delegate hunting approach to the nomination.

That may not be fair to Cruz, who is following the rules, such as they are. But the rules do not look good. Few of us were aware of them, because it has been so long since they were even remotely at play in the nominating process. They are now and they look in sore need of changing.

In the vast majority of states the rules have been established for many years.  To get any rule changed or to add new rules is a difficult process.  Then comes all of these crossover Democrats and Trump that everything is wrong and rigged, hogwash.  I'v been a Precinct Judge, chairman and a County Chairman, so I do know a little about the way the system and rules are handled.  We have lived and went by these rules for years and they have worked quite well, and, Trump can and should take all of Trumpettes back to the Democratic Party, where they really belong.

What State and County were you a Judge in! I want to look it up to see if listed in The ACRU's list for Voter Fraud! If you don't mind.

Or by the way, I only voted DemocRat once, in Operation Chaos!

Have a nice day!!

Sorry fella it is your idiotic rules that have us in this mess. They scream protect the insider, the result has been mediocre candidates for the last 3 decades and a congress stuffed with pathetic rhinos patiently waiting for promotion to K Street. If you feel every thing is great you are definitely a big part of the problem. I was a life long republican until idiot Rove and Bush tried to force through an amnesty

Hey Ray I have read yours several retorts defending the indefensible now I would like you to defend the Miss runoff primary election for GOP Senator where democrats admitted being paid to vote for the establishment candidate. The Teaparty candidate beat him with republican votes both times.

When people start talking about Cruz stealing delegates or lying only tells me you have no knowledge of the system and are ignoring the very Democrat and Liberal life of Trump, who is lying about that?

cruz's underhanded theft of votes from Dr. Carson and Marco Rubio turned me OFF of cruz, and his wifes position with the one worlders is another RED FLAG! Trump 2016, let's FINALLY clean house!

Fifteen minutes before the caucuses begin there is this statement by the Carson campaign he is returning to Florida.  It is amazing how you would take this as stealing the election and not look at the results of the election.  What were the figures, can't disclose them, that would be par for all of the Trumpettes, are you wearing your TooToo today?  Where does it not say that a man can work anywhere, she is working and regardless of where she would still be some part of this underground society.

Why haven't you vetted the Liberalism of Donald Trump for he qualifies right up there with Hillary and Bernie.  This is 2008 all over again where there is a segment of the electorate prefers putting their heads in the sand and don't want to find out the facts.

You're a perfect example of what this article is talking about...

It seems that many on tea party are willing to accept the corruption that G.O.P. has put into rules. Can anyone explain why one man one vote rule is not enough? The system they have in place means our votes during primary are worthless votes. Why have primary if a handful decides who wins?  If anyone agrees with the G.O.P. rules than they are just as crooked. We used to put crooks in jail, I guess that rules that made USA great are just useless like some voters.

Lawrence, you seem to be a reasonable and knowledgeable man, how are the election of delegates determined, and that also applies to all of you who keeps talking about stealing delegates.  In what capacity have you occupied that will confirm your knowledge to how your own state establishes it election rules and the delegates.   I dare say that none of the Trumpettes know.  How many of you have ever been a state delegate and attended your state convention, probably none but you can damn well criticize it.

Ray,

Please explain to them that the Republican Party is a "PRIVATE" owned brand and they establish their own rules from County to State to RNC.

Some seem to think that the people own the parties and government controls voting laws inside party structures - that is not so in either party.

The rules are well established and have been used over 100 years so they will not soon change. JMHO

Mangus, do you see any similarity between Obama's attitude about our constitution and Trumps view of the election laws.  In each case they should be able to reverse their purpose and totally disregard except what would be personally beneficial to each"s desire.

JUST IN->  Pelosi Announces House Resolution To Condemn Trump’s ‘Racist, Xenophobic Tweets’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced Monday that Democrats will offer a resolution condemning President Donald Trump’s “racist” tweets against Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

Pelosi wrote a letter to House Democrats announcing that they will draft a resolution to condemn Trump’s “racist” tweets against progressive Democrats.

“This weekend, the President went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about Members of Congress,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote.

“This morning, the President doubled down on his attacks on our four colleagues suggesting they apologize to him,” she added. “Let me be clear, our Caucus will continue to forcefully respond to these disgusting attacks.”

President Trump taunted the “squad” of far-left first-term progressive Democrats on Sunday, telling them to go back and fix the places they came from before telling the rest of the country what to do.

Trump’s tweets caused an uproar amongst the media and Hollywood celebrity classes, and now, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D–TX) hopes to capitalize on the president’s message by condemning them in Congress.

Lee said she will draft a resolution of condemnation.

“Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will be drafting a Resolution of Condemnation for the words used by President Trump about four members of the House of Representatives over the weekend,” Jackson Lee’s office wrote:

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......

....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!

President Trump’s remarks seemed particularly directed at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who is a former Somalian refugee.

Omar said Friday that the president “shouldn’t be in office” and told an audience of high school students that America was failing to uphold its promise to be a just society.

Rep. Omar said Trump was “stoking white nationalism” after he tweeted that some progressive congresswomen should “go back” to where they came from.

“You are stoking white nationalism because you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda,” Omar wrote:

Ilhan Omar  @IlhanMN

As Members of Congress, the only country we swear an oath to is the United States.

Which is why we are fighting to protect it from the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen. https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1150381394234941448

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez claimed Monday that President Trump’s remarks serve as the “hallmark language of white supremacists.”

President Trump tweeted Monday that Democrats need to apologize for the “foul language” and “terrible things they have said”:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!

Donald J. Trump  @realDonaldTrump

If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.
