Williamsburg, Va. — Due to the rainy weather, House Republicans aren’t having a grand time at their retreat this week, which is being held at the sprawling Kingsmill Resort. Few members have played golf, or ventured to nearby Colonial Williamsburg. But inside the hotel, which is surrounded by armed guards, Republicans are quietly planning their debt-limit strategy and talking politics in a ballroom overlooking the James River.

So far, prominent pollsters and journalists, such as Charlie Cook and William Kristol, have hosted briefings. During meals, several motivational speakers, including a blind mountain climber, have attempted to inspire the casually dressed lawmakers. There has also been much discussion about marketing. Patrick Doyle, chief executive of Domino’s Pizza, gave a well-received talk about selling a damaged brand to a modern audience.

But for the most part, the theme running through the sessions has been unity. As the next series of legislative battles nears, House GOP leaders are asking Republicans to stick together, especially after the internal clashes during the fiscal-cliff debate. Speaker John Boehner, for his part, has been a low-key presence. “He has been sitting back and listening,” says a Republican member. “He wants us to think more and fight less.”

Here are ten takeaways.

A short-term debt-limit extension is possible. Republicans are mulling the “possible virtue” of a short-term extension of the debt limit, according to Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Ryan and other House leaders see such a move as the best way to engage President Barack Obama on spending cuts in the coming months. They believe that once the immediate threat of default is off the table, Republicans will be in a better bargaining position; the less drama, the better. “The last thing we should be debating is whether we’re going to put the nation’s full faith and credit at risk,” Representative Greg Walden of Oregon said at a press conference.

Conservatives are divided on the debt limit. Many members are open to the idea of extending the debt limit into the spring, but it’s by no means a done deal. There is already a divide over strategy, and whether the debt limit should be used as leverage. Some members want to tie spending cuts to the debt ceiling, while others see the upcoming defense sequester and continuing resolution to fund the government as safer battlefields. To GOP leaders, the political and economic consequences of the sequester, or of a government shutdown due to a failure to extend the government’s funding, look far more manageable than default. Meanwhile, a growing group of conservative members is pushing for a balanced-budget amendment to be attached to a short-term extension, so nothing is settled.

Paul Ryan is a behind-the-scenes leader. Ryan, who has been relatively quiet since the presidential election, has stepped back into the spotlight. On Thursday, the Budget Committee chairman surprised reporters by holding an impromptu press conference, and he drew notice from his colleagues for his extemporaneous remarks, in which he backed the idea of a short-term debt-limit extension and boosted Boehner. As the embattled speaker looked on, Ryan assured backbenchers that Boehner is listening to him and other conservative members.

Repubs said they would be in a better bargaining position by raising taxes on the so called wealthy, now they will be in a better bargaining position if they support the usurpers continued efforts to destroy this nation by raising the debt ceiling. Right.

Mindy, you are exactly right! I want to know why Bill Kristol says "suck it up" and basically let Obama and his criminal crowd have whatever they want for the next four years. What kind of strategy is that? How did Bill Kristol become a major voice for the Republicans at a time when we are openly being "transformed" into a Marxist'/Socialist/Communist state? How come!

@Terrence

Because Bill Kristol is a RINO like 1/3 of the Republicans.  Bill Kristol needs to be removed as the major voice for the Republicans.  Makes you wonder if these Republicans know what they are doing. Yes, in fact, they know quite well l what they are doing, while they are collecting $ 170,000 and benefits/insurance per year off the backs of the tax payers as long as they are in there.

I say dump the RNC and Go Tea Party.  but who's listening?  What's the rush with the Republicans?  There being taken care of---no rush.  They don't feel they are working for us.

We have no leadership. Some of the talk show hosts would do a better job and if fact some on this site would do a better job.

We are in trouble....   melt the lines.... we are leaving our future in the hands of these

azzholes....    They do not fear the people, we are all just sitting, stewing and blogging,

They still show us that they fear the left more than us...    LET'S CHANGE THAT!

That's it gramjude!  That's it!

There is no rush, no push for the GOP to make headway.  No reason to all get together in one unisense.

If they even felt that their jobs were on the line, they might come together, but remember the RINO thinking Senator works against the Conservative Republicans and nothing can get done.

Time to look in another direction.  The LEFT whether they say so or not FEARS the Tea Party.  That is why they take such lengths to bash them as a bunch of little hitlers and terrorist.

I would bet that they would get some results that the Republicans just can't provide the people

But, who's listening to that?

Here we go again!

They all gotta go. Period.
And, at this point, I don't care how it happens!
Think about that.

"Surrounded by armed guards...." What a farce...

@ Ken

REALLY!!   LIke the Republicans are a threat to anyone, but themselves..Hahaha....Good laugh with you!

So is this BUSSINNESS as usual  with those people ?

Maybe there is something we are just flat out not aware of. I'm not talking about gun takeaways etc

How about the basic things about the economy--like what if the republicans were in, maybe they would fear the lower mentality American public that voted for Obama again and they being much more reactionary and actually revolting when their stuff is taken away as opposed to the level headed We The People. The fear of a Greece scenario is basically why there are so many goodies being given away. It prevents civil unrest and possible civil war.

OR

Everything is just hopeless and no matter who is in power it would just be the same and everything is going to collapse in a few years with food lines and chaos, civil unrest and a lot of dead people to plant.

OR

How about a melancholia scenario where only a chosen few know whats up the road and it just doesn't matter what anyone does because its all about keeping the peace--keep everyone happy till it happens.

OR

We are all being driven to a one world government by both parties only Obama is getting us there sooner then the Republican game plan and because of this the republicans are allowing him to do his dirty work. It ll results in The one world government needing a leader. So this guy steps on the world scene and makes a [Peace and Safety 7 year agreement] between Israel and The Arab peoples. It so successful that the one world counsel decides to make him the one world president. Sound familiar? That makes more sense then any other idea. WE ARE THERE PEOPLE! I pray that it were not true but this time around there are way too many things in place that are screaming its here its here.

Open your eyes and your ears! Doubt not.

These SLAVES TO SATAN, as proven by what they do, LIE, deceive  and STEAL, will continue to STEAL< and will not address the problem, as they are in bed with the globalist, and those who are blessed with the ability to see truth know it.

THE only thing that is RIGHT is refuse to raise the dept limit ONE THIN US dime, and CUT USELESS bureaucrats and agency's until they can pay everything from WHAT THEY HAVE< NOW.

If i was YOUR debtor  I owed YOU 100 USD, had a deal to pay YOU 10% interest  10 USD a month, and came to YOU and told you that in order to continue to pay YOU I would have to borrow another 100 USD , would YOU loan it to ME??

ALERT ALERT

Joe Biden Vows: Give Taxpayer-Funded Obamacare To All Illegal Aliens In U.S.

Former Vice President and 2020 Democrat presidential primary candidate Joe Biden is vowing to give Obamacare, funded by American taxpayers, to all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States.

During an interview with Telemundo’s Jose Diaz-Balart, Biden forgot that Obamacare technically bans illegal aliens from enrolling in healthcare plans — although illegal aliens are still able to obtain subsidized and free healthcare at Americans’ expense — and promised that under his plan, all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens would be able to get Obamacare.

The exchange went as follows:

DIAZ-BALART: When I … NBC moderated that first debate with you, I didn’t … I don’t recall a clear answer, under your plan should … would the 11, 12 million undocumented immigrants that live in the United States, that have been here many for generations, would they have access …

BIDEN: Yes.

DIAZ-BALART: — to health insurance.

BIDEN: Yes, they … if they can buy into the system like everybody else.

DIAZ-BALART: Because you know, in [Obamacare] they can’t.

BIDEN: Yeah. Yeah, I know. Well they can, that’s my point. They continue to be able to do that.

DIAN-BALART: They cannot under the ObamaCare.

BIDEN: Well and that’s my point, they will though. They will be able to buy into … [illegal aliens] would be able to buy in, just like anyone else could.

Biden joins Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg — among other 2020 Democrats — in committing to forcing American taxpayers to pay for healthcare for illegal aliens who arrive in the U.S.

Already, due to loopholes, American taxpayers are spending nearly $20 billion every year to provide illegal aliens with subsidized healthcare, emergency room visits, and other health services.

Under the 2020 Democrats’ plan to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to all illegal aliens living in the U.S., Americans would be billed potentially $660 billion every decade just to cover the costs. Other research has found that the plan would cost Americans at least $23 billion every year.

As Breitbart News has reported, experts have said that giving taxpayer-funded healthcare to effectively all foreign nationals who can make it to America’s borders would drive “strong incentives for people with serious health problems to enter the country or remain longer than their visas allow in order to get government-funded care.”

Despite 2020 Democrats’ continued push for taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens, American voters are overwhelmingly opposed to the plan. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey revealed that the healthcare-for-illegal-aliens plan is the least popular policy position, with opposition from 62 percent of U.S. voters.

Similarly, a CNN poll from July discovered that 63 percent of likely swing voters oppose providing healthcare to illegal aliens, along with nearly 6-in-10 of all likely U.S. voters and 61 percent of moderates. A Rasmussen Reports survey also found that likely voters, by a majority of 55 percent, oppose giving healthcare to even the most low-income illegal aliens.
