Supreme Court rules against SEIU in dispute over union fee hike

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that unions must give nonmembers an immediate chance to object to unexpected fee increases or special assessments that all workers are required to pay in closed-shop situations.

The court ruled for Dianne Knox and other nonmembers of the Service Employees International Union's Local 1000, who wanted to object and opt out of a $12 million special assessment the union required from its California public sector members for political campaigning. Knox and others said the union did not give them a legally required notice that the increase was coming.

The union, and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said the annual notice that the union gives was sufficient. The high court disagreed in a 7-2 judgment written by Justice Samuel Alito.

"When a public-sector union imposes a special assessment or dues increase, the union must provide a fresh ... notice and may not exact any funds from nonmembers without their affirmative consent," Alito said.

Leslie, you are right. There was a time the union was a good thing, and then it was taken over by the mob. Today's unions are essentially communist organizations. Today's unions want to control all businesses and have every citizen a member. In effect, they want to be the government.

It's shocking to me that the union can make nonunion members do anything, especially pay dues.

Must be a CLOSED SHOP in a non-right to work State - Many Teachers are not members of the UNION but they pay dues in many States if I recall correctly?

Magnus, that what I understood from the article.

For someone like me who has always lived in a right to work state this just seems an absurdity. IN SC there would be riots if unions tried to make non union workers pay dues.

Leslie, not having grown up with the union mentality I really know little about the. I do know that people I meet from big union states get angry if you say any negative about them. They seem to treat it like some religion. I guess  they are brainwashed as kids to love the union no matter what. They are told the union is the only thing that will ever look after their best interest. And that might be true, but its at the expense of other people. Welfare and unions are separated by a thin line. Both demand others give up so they can have more.

Fantastic

This is great news!

Keep up the praying. Seems to be working

The Fed and State employees should never be unionized. At least with the private sector unions the owner of the company in involved in the bargaining. Who is there for us the ones who pay their wages? No One except the fat wealthy union bosses sucking up our money

I am glad to hear that the Judges ruled against them.  i think a lot of Union people are waking up to the greed of the rich Union bosses and realize they are lining their pockets with their hard earned money.

Let's see, levying fees on "non members" - -doesn't sound very "kosher" to me; I'd be part of any group heading back to the Supreme Court to have ALL unions disbanded and "prohibited"!  At their original inception, unions were a good thing and DID help workers, but the unions have long "outlived" their original intent and usefulness!

Angry Dem Impeachment ‘Witness’: Pam Karlan Donated Thousands To Hillary And Was On Clinton’s List For Potential SCOTUS Nomination

The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, kicked off its first impeachment circus Wednesday morning.

The four ‘witnesses’ testifying have never actually witnessed any of Trump’s dealings with Ukraine firsthand — the four witnesses are law professors offering legal analysis.

One of the witnesses the Dems rolled out is an angry Hillary Clinton donor who was on Crooked’s list for a potential Supreme Court nomination.

No wonder why this unhinged, dowdy woman is so pissed off!

“Professor Pam Karlan donated thousands of dollars to Democrats and was on Hillary Clinton’s list for a potential Supreme Court nomination. So she certainly has no vendetta against President Trump,” GOP Rep. Mark Walker said.

Congressman Walker also pointed out that Noah Feldman, the Dems first partisan witness in Wednesday’s hearing tweeted about impeaching Trump right after he was sworn in.

Meet Noah Feldman, House Democrats first partisan witness.

Look at the date of this tweet. He has been trying to get @realDonaldTrump impeached since 46 days into his presidency.

His reason? Trump criticized President Obama.

This is a sham impeachment with sham witnesses. https://twitter.com/NoahRFeldman/status/839185127494254592

The next witness, Karlan, has donated thousands to Democrats and was on Hillary Clinton’s list for a potential Supreme Court nomination.

So she certainly has no vendetta against @realDonaldTrump.

These witnesses are as serious as House Democrats impeachment case: not at all.

The entire sham show trial is stacked with partisan hacks who have wanted to impeach Trump from the moment he won in November of 2016.

Norm Eisen, the Democrats’ counsel who is blasting Trump and questioning witnesses in Wednesday’s show trial, tweeted about impeaching Trump before Donald Trump was even sworn into office!
