The United Nations was established in hopes of preventing another global catastrophe. World War II had ended. Parts of Europe and Asia were in ruins. Subsequently, the U.N. was established in 1945 as an organization of member states to foster international cooperation.
Yet, over the past 60 years, the effectiveness of the U.N. has been questioned because its role as a peacemaker has been subverted time and time again by individuals representing separate governments with their own agendas.
Now the organization may be used by President Barack Obama to reach a deal with Iran over that country’s use of nuclear power by circumventing the U.S. Congress.
But South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says the Senate will not sit idly by and be marginalized by the Obama administration.
If necessary, the Senate will retaliate by cutting off funding to the U.N., he said.
