Foaming at the Mouth- On Special Counsel Appointment, Democrats Played Republicans For Fools

On Special Counsel Appointment, Democrats Played Republicans For Fools
Considering the ongoing political siege against the administration, appointing a special counsel looks like an unnecessary risk that could turn into a major blunder.

After an avalanche of bad press this week, the Trump White House finally caved. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller is now special counsel for the investigation into Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. The decision will shape the Trump presidency in unforeseeable ways. Right now, considering the ongoing political siege against the administration, this looks like an unnecessary risk that could turn into a major blunder.

Yes, there are clear, thoughtful reasons for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel (the replacement position for the better-known “special prosecutor” role, which expired under statute in 1999). Many Americans right now are skeptical of the effectiveness and impartiality of our core law enforcement institutions to handle the Trump-Russia case under the standard Department of Justice chain of command. It’s one thing to laugh at the waste and incompetence at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but if the DOJ isn’t trusted, there’s a real problem. Getting this right is important.

To be sure, the special counsel appointment will restore some confidence in federal law enforcement’s ability to handle this politically charged case, at least in the short term. It also will take some heat off of a White House press operation that has lately been a circular firing squad of loose cannons. For those who believe the only way forward for Trump is to put a man of Mueller’s stature at the head of the most momentous—and contentious—presidential investigation since the Monica Lewinsky affair, this may not just seem like a good option, but the only option.

That’s assuming the Democrats and assorted Trump critics in media are actually interested in reestablishing respect for our justice system, and getting to the truth of the outrageous accusations (of treason, no less) that beleaguer the president and his administration. Unfortunately, the Democrats likely have other plans, and will capitalize on the investigation itself for partisan ends irrespective of the eventual outcome. Thus the GOP’s tendency to concede to notions of fair play becomes a political liability.
This Will Be Likely to Turn Fast

While this week the media will write hagiographies about Mueller, the same propaganda apparatus that has evinced a nearly pathological hatred for Trump will exert unimaginable public pressure on him in due time. And if it starts to look like Mueller might fail to take some scalps to placate the apoplectic anti-Trump Left, the media storyline about this legendary public servant will dramatically shift. Just as we saw with recently pink-slipped FBI Director James Comey during his last months in office, he will go from hero to hack in the blink of an eye.

Additionally, this adds to an undeniable momentum for the “impeach Trump” crowd. First National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was fired, then Attorney General Sessions recused himself, then a series of sensationalized Trump missteps, and now a special counsel has the reins of the DOJ’s most politically sensitive investigation.

The mere existence of the special counsel will be taken by many on the Left as vindication that they were right all along, that Trump is every bit the sociopathic falsifier they have claimed he is, and that the dictates of justice demand a warm Trump administration body in a cold, soul-crushing cell. They have gotten a recusal, and a firing. Now they want a conviction.

All of this will encourage the worst elements of the Democrat Party and embolden those pathologically predisposed to hating Trump. The media will do everything in its power to isolate senior Trump figures over the course of the investigation, insinuating guilt based on leaks of evidence, then sanctimoniously demanding the alleged perpetrator be frog-marched out of the White House long before any charges are brought, if ever. The media, much more so than the Democratic Party, has been successful at simultaneously demanding the Trump administration take certain actions, then citing those very actions as an admission of disarray, incompetence, or dishonesty inside the White House.
The President’s Enemies Are Salivating

There are also the unknown unknowns of collateral damage from the investigatory process. In perhaps the most well-known case of this, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, former Vice President Cheney’s assistant for national security, was charged and convicted with crimes that had nothing to do with the original purpose of the special counsel’s case. Patrick Fitzgerald did his modern interpretation of Inspector Javert, and a man had his life almost ruined because of it. If anyone thinks the same fate may not await a hapless Trump staffer, they are not well enough acquainted with our treacherous web of federal laws.

Right now our political parties are in the middle of a partisan street fight. A special counsel may calm worst of the brawling for a few days, or even a few weeks. But in time, Democrats will thoroughly politicize the investigation, drag it out, and we can be assured they will find only one outcome acceptable. Ultimately for them, this isn’t about what is right, it’s about what is useful, and they have been given an invaluable tool to bludgeon the opposition, speculate wildly about the latest investigative findings, and maybe collect some trophies of ruined Trump staffers along the way.

Democrats somehow avoided a special counsel for Hilary Clinton’s server, despite the Loretta Lynch tarmac meeting and all the glaring conflicts of interest that came before it. They weren’t going to let ethics get in the way of politics. It’s a lesson the GOP has failed to learn. Republicans may pat themselves on the back for taking the higher road today, but in time, they may come to realize that in their efforts to show the country there is something more important than winning, they lost to a Democrat opposition that finds such notions quaint.

Foaming at the Mouth- On Special Counsel Appointment, Democrats Played Republicans For Fools

except it goes against sound logic to believe otherwise fairly intelligent people can continually be played as fools. It's much more feasible to conclude they're willing participants playing the role of fools.

damn Col..  I was replying in agreement with your post but it went away.

I think you're strategy is a good one. Doubtful to happen, but if Trump is the counterpuncher he thinks he is your (now missing) post's content would be a fitting counterpunch.

9thA... don't know what happened ... had saved part of what I posted earlier ... here it is again. Maybe it will stick?

Appointing a special council admits to the premise that 'collusion' with Russia must exist somewhere in the Trump Administration.  The current fiasco is not the work of the Democrats alone... it is the result of collusion by the GOP leadership, the never Trump crowd... albeit, silent collusion. The Establishment in both Political Parties is out to destroy President Trump... before he can DRAIN THE SWAMP.

If Trump doesn't counter quickly... by issuing a whole host of high level indictments and disclosures of massive corruption in the DNC and his own party... he will likely never see the normal end of his Administration.. they will Impeach him and possibly worse.

He must gain the initiative and shift the public narrative too focus on the massive criminal cabal operating as our government.  He may want to consider addressing the Nation, by announcing an initiative to Drain the Swamp... briefly, outlining in specific terms,  the current  problems within both Political Parties. Describing some of their more poignant corrupt practices, and what he intends to do.  He must ask for the people's support ... and explain how the MSM will react to his draining the swamp.

Frankly, I give up...  Pres. TRUMP is f'ing up all over the place, he doesn't have control of his staff and it is getting worse with time ... not better.  Does Pres. Trump actually believe that AG Sessions is his buddy?  If so,  I would suggest he sober up; by the time, this mess is over he may wish he had never run for President. He must change the current political narrative if he is to survive and do it now.

Excuse my negativity... but this is just to bazar to sit here and believe this is happening without the collusion of the GOP leadership.  Pres. Trump is on his own.  As such, he had better start a counter attack and now; before, he is completely isolated and on his way too jail. He may want to start by firing his Chief of staff... Priebus.  He should then call in AG Session's and ask him where he is on indicting the Clintons, and if he has begun an investigation into Obama's US Citizenship.  If he responds improperly on either issue... fire him... on the spot.  Then Call in the Deputy AG and ask him the same questions. If he wont respond or does so improperly, fire him. Continue down the line until someone is willing to start draining the swamp or they are all fired. Pres. Trump can explain why he fired, who he has, and the people will believe him; as they are aware of the political corruption in DC and want it gone. They expect Trump to fire a whole lot of people. That's why they voted for him.

What ever Pres. Trump does... he must not hire any more Establishment figures.  He must also treat the Establishment RINO's as enemies. In Fact, he may want to meet with the few true Conservatives in Congress, to discus starting a unified conservative caucus... He may want to  reach across the isle, too recruit conservative Democrats, in order to form a bi-partisan conservative caucus; a caucus powerful enough to pull down McConnell and Ryan... even if it means putting a Democrat in the Speaker's seat.   Do it and do it quickly.

This is war... and it demands immediate, decisive, action... There are only two types of warriors... the quick and the dead.  If Pres. Trump wants to survive, he had better act quickly and decisively.

The person who authored this diatribe, did he ever stop to read and review what he had written?

For instance, " Yes, there are clear, thoughtful reasons for Deputy AG Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel..........." Oh, yeah? What the hell are they. Name the "thoughtful: reasons. NAME THEM!

He goes on to say that Americans are skeptical, and if the DOJ isn't trusted we have real problems. And that is thoughtful??

Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch destroyed the credibility of the DOJ. Utterly. James Comey did likewise with the FBI. Clinton with the State Department. And most important of all, Obama with the presidency.

Is Clinton facing indictment? Is Obama? Holder? Lynch? Comey for his refusal to recommend charges be brought against Clinton?

We don't even have a DOJ anymore. It is gone. History. Finished.

Only one way to bring it back. And Sessions isn't going to do it. Neither is Rosenstein. All they want to do is investigate, to stall, to pretend, to play games, because they are all afraid to do their jobs.

25 'Impeachable' Obama scandals that dwarf the Comey firing

It's been more than eight years since Democrats and the national media uttered that word, but now that President Trump is the man in the White House, it's back with a vengeance.

Funny how we never heard a peep about impeachment when Barack Obama and his minions were up their eyeballs in these 25 jaw-dropping scandals and violations …

The left doesn't operate on the principal that TRUTH is reality... or that the truth is the determinant factor for shaping society. They don't believe in absolutes, or ethical boundaries, in politics or journalism. The Progressive Left believe PERCEPTION BECOMES REALITY... and the controlling factor in transforming a lie into the truth is to thru the manipulation of public opinion.

The Left believes those who hold the public's attention create reality... by controlling the narrative 'reality' replaces the Truth.  To that end, the progressives have hijacked journalism and enlisted the MSM as their propaganda arm.  They are using the MSM to transform their agenda of lies and deceit into reality... Denying the truth is their business and they are very good at it.

Honest, moral individuals are confounded by what is reported as the truth by the MSM... they simply can not accept that people are so foolish or easily mislead. Yet, reality stands in testimony to a capricious public and mercurial political process.  Pres. Trump is dangerously in denial. He needs to awake to the coming tsunami, before he is overtaken by the false narrative created by the MSM and DNC.

It is time for Pres. Trump to DEMAND the DOJ begin draining the swamp... indict Hillary Clinton NOW... include 'Treason' as one of the charges.  At the same time announce the creation of a new Office, in the DOJ,  for investigating political corruption.  Announce the creation of a standing Special Grand Jury, with the duty to pursue nothing but Political Corruption. Focus the MSM's attention away from the Russian affair and onto this new Office in the DOJ. Left them know that it will be working to identify and prosecute unlawful leaks and Espionage, as part of its function.  That should turn the ear of several journalist as they contemplate what Pres. Trump intends.

Engage in a form of political Shock and Awh... by naming names, and identifying criminal acts that will no longer be tolerated. Then, have the DOJ issue indictments as quickly as possible on the leadership in the DC Swamp... focus on the large fish, in both political parties, in the beginning.  Pres. Trump must regain the political narrative, if he is to save his Presidency. The public's perception of his administration is rapidly turning South.

There are massive amounts of blood in the water...  the Sharks are no longer circling, they are feeding on Pres. Trump's Administration.  The President needs to shift the national narrative away from his administration and onto the swamp... where the real criminals live... He must do it now not latter.

The enemies are everywhere and they are not going to stop. It's the deranged violent Snowflakes, along with Black Lives Matter, the DEMs, the Deep State, the Never Trumpers, the RINO Republicans, and the 'bought & sold' corrupt Media, are America's growing enemies of today.  We are witnessing the unraveling of a unique civilized society. We've seen it every day, a little bit at a time. Now it has become more accelerated.

The silencing of Conservative voices is absolutely paramount to them. Keeping all dialog on their ideological narrative and maintaining it on a daily basis is designed to wear us down. I can see its effects everywhere. It's NOT working with people that know who they are and what their strategy is. However, those people are not in the large numbers that will be necessary to see through their smoke and mirror campaigns. The left project their criminal deeds on their opponents and it typically is successful. The public never knows what hit them.

The diverse groups of enemies are all working in concert to overthrow this president. WHY? They know he can be extremely successful at reversing the 'Mao Marxist Obama' agenda. Bear in mind, since we know the Left not ONLY owns the corrupt Media, be aware that the Media IS the LEFT. They've been pushing the envelope even further than most people would have ever imagined. They are demonstrating that they are absolutely willing to do anything and everything to maintain power in America. ...Including MURDER! The stakes are so high.

President Trump was correct when he stated that the Media is America's enemy. That label struck a nerve with them, which only seemed to raise their anger to another level.

All of Trump's loyal supporters were elated with the course that his administration was plotting. However, a growing concern concern is Trump's inability to fully grasp who the LEFT is and what they are trying to do to him. He keeps trying to appease them when he should be running them over. He cannot take the LEFT off their mission by being nice. Nope! It only embolden's them. Like; What the hell is the DoJ doing by caving in to the LEFT with giving credence to their witch hunt?  Don't they realize that the LEFT wants this deviously contrived witch hunt to remain in their headlines during the 2018 elections? The DEMs never have anything to offer their voters, but they will indeed be able to point at (what they're labeling as) a criminal investigation of the sitting President.

Put plainly, the LEFT in ALL of it's aforementioned forms, are telegraphing their goal. And that is their plan to take Trump out. If his current naive staff and advisers are unable to grasp that reality and vigorously tackle that issue head on (and stop the olive branch tactics) the LEFT WILL end up winning.

The LEFT is NOT the other political party, the LEFT IS the enemy of America. And folks, WE ARE AT WAR to save America! I believe this is our very last chance!

Trump's staff is not NAIVE they are complicit with the LEFT.. albeit surreptitiously.  Trump needs to take a couple of days for a hands on review of who is hiring and what they are hiring ... who remains from the Obama Admin and where they are within the Administration.  Trump needs to get a handle on the disloyalty, leaking, and surreptitious acts, undermining his administration... that has to happen NOW.

Once he has identified the personnel problems within the Administration and White House...  he needs to take immediate action too correct those problems... He may need to ask Ivanka or his eldest son to take a direct roll in supervising the hiring and firing of the White House and Administrative Staff the President is permitted to manage.  It is likely that he will need to bring in outside help too manage this situation.. personnel and human resource teams that respond directly to him and his closest confidants. He may need to pay for these out of his own pocket.. if he is too put them in place quickly... a team of temporary Czars.

He must clean house in the Administration and then focus on the swamp... in that order. If not the Deep State and his own party will eat him alive. The other programs he wants to work on must be left for latter .. if there is to be a latter. It is a coup... and the enemy is coming from nearly every direction.

IT'S A COUP!!!!!

By Shari Goodman  /  American Thinker

During the last eight years, the far left and their cohorts in the Democratic Party were successfully on their way to transforming our Constitutional Republic from a country of laws into a country of men. They arrogantly believed the last election was theirs to be had with Hillary Clinton at the helm to continue Obama’s legacy of “leading from behind.” Their mission is the “transformation of our free market, our sovereignty, and our culture to a Socialist/Communist New World Order. They didn’t count on billionaire Donald Trump, who had never before held office, to throw a wrench into their radical agenda by injecting himself into our body politic, and in return they are waging a relentless coup to have him removed from office.

They have termed this coup “The Resistance” and with the aid of our activist judicial system, educational institutions, Hollywood, the press, and social media; they are leading a full blown war against President Trump on various fronts. With the aid of the propaganda media establishment, akin to the old Soviet Union’s Pravda, they proudly obstruct President Trump’s every move. Their aim is impeachment, but to impeach they need to have grounds; thus, they have concocted a conspiracy theory of Russian collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians without a shred of evidence to support that theory.

Not a day goes by without an accusation by Democrats in search of a crime. When President Trump used an Executive Order to initiate his travel ban from countries known to be hotbeds of Islamic terrorism, the Left used the courts to stop his ban from taking effect. Although President Trump had the statutory authority to execute the ban pursuant to section 1182(f) and 1185 (a) of Title 8, they succeeded in halting the ban by filing their lawsuits in Federal District Court within the far left 9th Circuit (the most overturned court in the country), dominated by Clinton and Obama appointed judges, well known for its judicial activism and disregard of Constitutional principles. Consequently, Muslim refugees who cannot be vetted for lack of documentation continue to stream onto our shores and increase the risk of terror attacks on the mainland.

Currently the left is up in arms over the firing of former FBI Director, James Comey. The ACLU recently announced they will lead an investigation into the firing; yet not a word was heard from the ACLU when Bill Clinton fired FBI Director, William Sessions in 1993. It was only a few months ago when the likes of Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid called for Comey’s resignation. Socialist Maxine Waters from the left leaning state of California stated just a few days ago ” I don’t support Trump firing Comey, I would support Hillary Clinton firing Comey.”  What we are witnessing is a schizophrenic narrative and a Democratic Party meltdown.

And if that isn’t enough, our college campuses are actively silencing those who support President Trump with physical assaults, threats, and intimidation. Institutions of learning should provide an environment for the free exchange of ideas, but instead, young Conservatives are threatened with poor grades should they express support for President Trump and his conservative agenda. There is no diversity of thought on today’s college campuses. It is fascism and group think that has taken root and those who differ are singled out as outcasts to be ridiculed and shunned at best or physically and verbally assaulted at worst.

President Trump is routinely mocked, insulted, and ridiculed on mainstream television by those who have made a career of bashing conservatives. His wife, Melania, his young son, and his daughter Ivanka have all been targets of insults, innuendos, and slander. Ivanka, a beautiful role model as a young wife, mother, and entrepreneur, faces a boycott of her product line being led by Shannon Coulter, a technology and media specialist based in San Francisco. As the daughter of President Trump, she is considered fair game by the haters. Consequently, a number of stores no longer carry her merchandise. What has become clear is that anyone related to President Trump or anyone who supports him publicly is at risk of being ostracized or targeted for their support of him.

Bill O’Reilly’s termination looks like a hit job by the far left for his support of President Trump. Yes, there were allegations of sexual impropriety, but they were allegations that took place years ago. He had the number one cable news show on Fox. There was no trial or facts presented; yet, it didn’t stop Fox from terminating him. O’Reilly may be guilty, but the timing is specious. His termination was a victory celebrated by the Left. Does every Conservative commentator on national television now have a target on his or her back? Can freedom of expression survive in a climate of fear? In the future, who will be willing to risk their livelihoods and careers if fear is the methodology used to control the public sphere?

This coup didn’t happen in a vacuum. It is a field operation led by Barack Hussein Obama from his home in Washington, D.C. while financed by Globalist billionaire George Soros. Leading this coup with Obama is his closest adviser, Valerie Jarrett, who has moved into the Obama household. They, along with their many leftist compadres still entrenched in the hierarchy of the beltway, are at the forefront of this coup. Through leaks, false narratives, lies, and misinformation they are plotting President’s Trump’s demise. It is a coup against President Trump and against all of us who voted for him. Americans have a decision to make. Will we succumb or will we fight back?

If you ever wondered what it was like during the Salem witch trials back in 1692, just turn on CNN or MSNBC. Turmps own party is involved in the continuing saga... as the Never Trump caucus would rather see Hillary President than Trump... could it be they are cut from the same cloth.

The Republican leadership is now declaiming that the special prosecutor is “bipartisan,” and that his probe will be over in a matter of months. Are they STUPID? Look Robert Mueller went to prep school with John Kerry, he was brought to Boston by Bill Weld, he was appointed by a Bush, and worked for an Obama.  Mueller is a consummate Establishment hack...

Robert Mueller will run this investigation into the ground... either extending it until Trump is forced to fire him... resulting in even greater calls for his Impeachment or until Mueller finds something too prosecute Trump or a close member of his personal staff... discrediting the President and mortally wounding his Administration. The GOP Never TRUMP arm is behind this... The Dem's  don't have the power to make this happen... without Congressional GOP consent..

FBI Text Should Alarm Every American

Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, the reported FBI lovebirds, are the poster children for the next “Don’t Text and Investigate” public service ads airing soon at an FBI office near you.

Their extraordinary texting affair on their government phones has given the FBI a black eye, laying bare a raw political bias brought into the workplace that agents are supposed to check at the door when they strap on their guns and badges.

It is no longer in dispute that they held animus for Donald Trump, who was a subject of their Russia probe, or that they openly discussed using the powers of their office to “stop” Trumpfrom becoming president. The only question is whether any official acts they took in the Russia collusion probe were driven by those sentiments.

The Justice Department’s inspector general is endeavoring to answer that question.

For any American who wants an answer sooner, there are just five words, among the thousands of suggestive texts Page and Strzok exchanged, that you should read.

That passage was transmitted on May 19, 2017. “There’s no big there there,” Strzok texted.

The date of the text long has intrigued investigators: It is two days after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein named special counsel Robert Mueller to oversee an investigation into alleged collusion between Trump and the Russia campaign.

Since the text was turned over to Congress, investigators wondered whether it referred to the evidence against the Trump campaign.

This month, they finally got the chance to ask. Strzok declined to say — but Page, during a closed-door interview with lawmakers, confirmed in the most pained and contorted way that the message in fact referred to the quality of the Russia case, according to multiple eyewitnesses.

The admission is deeply consequential. It means Rosenstein unleashed the most awesome powers of a special counsel to investigate an allegation that the key FBI officials, driving the investigation for 10 months beforehand, did not think was “there.”

By the time of the text and Mueller’s appointment, the FBI’s best counterintelligence agents had had plenty of time to dig. They knowingly used a dossier funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign — which contained uncorroborated allegations — to persuade the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to issue a warrant to monitor Trump campaign adviser Carter Page (no relation to Lisa Page).

They sat on Carter Page’s phones and emails for nearly six months without getting evidence that would warrant prosecuting him. The evidence they had gathered was deemed so weak that their boss, then-FBI Director James Comey, was forced to admit to Congress after being fired by Trump that the core allegation remained substantially uncorroborated.

In other words, they had a big nothing burger. And, based on that empty-calorie dish, Rosenstein authorized the buffet menu of a special prosecutor that has cost America millions of dollars and months of political strife.

The work product Strzok created to justify the collusion probe now has been shown to be inferior: A Clinton-hired contractor produced multiple documents accusing Trump of wrongdoing during the election; each was routed to the FBI through a different source or was used to seed news articles with similar allegations that further built an uncorroborated public narrative of Trump-Russia collusion. Most troubling, the FBI relied on at least one of those news stories to justify the FISA warrant against Carter Page.

That sort of multifaceted allegation machine, which can be traced back to a single source, is known in spy craft as “circular intelligence reporting,” and it’s the sort of bad product that professional spooks are trained to spot and reject.

But Team Strzok kept pushing it through the system, causing a major escalation of a probe for which, by his own words, he knew had “no big there there.”

The answer as to why a pro such as Strzok would take such action has become clearer, at least to congressional investigators. That clarity comes from the context of the other emails and text messages that surrounded the May 19, 2017, declaration.

It turns out that what Strzok and Lisa Page were really doing that day was debating whether they should stay with the FBI and try to rise through the ranks to the level of an assistant director (AD) or join Mueller’s special counsel team.

“Who gives a f*ck, one more AD like [redacted] or whoever?” Strzok wrote, weighing the merits of promotion, before apparently suggesting what would be a more attractive role: “An investigation leading to impeachment?”

Lisa Page apparently realized the conversation had gone too far and tried to reel it in. “We should stop having this conversation here,” she texted back, adding later it was important to examine “the different realistic outcomes of this case.”

A few minutes later Strzok texted his own handicap of the Russia evidence: “You and I both know the odds are nothing. If I thought it was likely, I’d be there no question. I hesitate in part because of my gut sense and concern there’s no big there there.”

So the FBI agents who helped drive the Russia collusion narrative — as well as Rosenstein’s decision to appoint Mueller — apparently knew all along that the evidence was going to lead to “nothing” and, yet, they proceeded because they thought there was still a possibility of impeachment.

Impeachment is a political outcome. The only logical conclusion, then, that congressional investigators can make is that political bias led these agents to press an investigation forward to achieve the political outcome of impeachment, even though their professional training told them it had “no big there there.”

And that, by definition, is political bias in action.

How concerned you are by this conduct is almost certainly affected by your love or hatred for Trump. But put yourself for a second in the hot seat of an investigation by the same FBI cast of characters: You are under investigation for a crime the agents don’t think occurred, but the investigation still advances because the desired outcome is to get you fired from your job.

 Trump Poised To Take
 Control Of The Federal Reserve

  • The Fed doesn’t stabilize markets and money — it does the opposite
  • President Trump sharply criticized the Federal Reserve this week, saying interest rate increases are hurting the economy.
  • Trump will have the opportunity to fashion the central bank in the image he would like as he has four vacancies to fill on the board of governors.
  • The result could be a more politicized Fed.

President Donald Trump has multiple reasons as to why he should take control of the Federal Reserve. He will do so both because he can and because his broader policies argue that he should do so. The president is anti-overregulating American industry. The Fed is a leader in pushing stringent regulation on the nation. By raising interest rates and stopping the growth in the money supply it stands in the way of further growth in the American economy.

First, He Can

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve is required to have seven members. It has three. Two of the current governors were put into their position by President Trump. Two more have been nominated by the president and are awaiting confirmation by the Senate. After these two are put on the Fed’s board, the president will then nominate two more to follow them. In essence, it is possible that six of the seven Board members will be put in place by Trump.

The Federal Open Market Committee has 12 members and sets the nation’s monetary policy. Seven of the 12 are the members of the Board of Governors. Five additional are Federal Reserve district bank presidents. Other than the head of the Fed bank in New York, who was nominated by the president, the other four can only take their positions as district bank presidents if the board in Washington agrees to their hiring. One of these, the Fed Bank president in Minneapolis, Neel Kashkari, is already arguing for no further rate increases.

Second, Regulation

Following the passage of the Dodd Frank Act in July 2010, the Fed was given enormous power to regulate the banking industry. It moved quickly to implement a number of new rules. The Fed set up a system that would penalize banks that failed to obey its new rules. These rules included setting limits as to how big an individual bank could be; how much money the banks had to invest in fed funds and Treasurys as a percent of their assets; which loans were desirable and which were not; where the banks had to obtain their funding and many, many, more up to and including how much a bank could pay its investors in dividends.

These rules have meaningfully slowed bank investments in the economy (the Volcker Rule) and they have had a crippling effect on bank lending in the housing markets (other agencies have had an impact here also).

Thus, of all of the government agencies the Fed has been possibly the most restrictive. The president has already moved to correct these excesses by putting in place a new Fed Governor (Randal Quarles) to regulate the banking industry.

Three, Killing Economic Growth

In the second quarter of 2018, the growth in non-seasonally adjusted money supply (M2) has been zero. That’s right, the money supply did not grow at all. This is because the Fed is shrinking its balance sheet ultimately by $50 billion per month. In addition, the Fed has raised interest rates seven times since Q4 2015. Supposedly there are five more rate increases coming.

This is the tightest monetary policy since Paul Volcker headed the institution in the mid-1980s. It will be recalled his policies led to back-to-back recessions. Current Fed monetary policy is directly in conflict with the president’s economic goals.

Moreover, the Treasury is estimating it will pay $415 billion in interest on the federal debt in this fiscal year. A better estimate might be $450 billion if rates keep going up. There are a lot of bridges and tunnels and jobs that could be created with this money.

Then there is inflation. It is likely to rise if the Fed eases its policies. If that happens paying down the federal debt becomes easier. On a less desirable note, higher interest rates lower real estate values. Lower rates that stimulate inflation increase real estate values.

Bottom Line

The president can and will take control of the Fed. It may be recalled when the law was written creating the Federal Reserve the secretary of the Treasury was designated as the head of the Federal Reserve. We are going to return to that era. Like it or not the Fed is about to be politicized.
